Trypanosomiasis control in relation to other public health services.

The authors describe the aims and principles of trypanosomiasis control and discuss the individual techniques of control and the ways in which these can be channelled through a general rural health service. They argue that, given the circumstances at present prevailing in rural Africa, a broad-based general public health service should be established before specific campaigns for control or eradication of sleeping-sickness, or indeed any other specific diseases, are instituted. They emphasize the necessity of international co-operation for effective trypanomiasis control.

The peri-urban interface and house infestation with Triatoma infestans in the Argentine Chaco: an underreported process?

Peri-urban infestations with triatomine bugs, their sources and their dynamics have rarely been investigated. Here, we corroborated the reported occurrence of Triatoma infestans in a peri-urban area and in neighbouring rural houses in Pampa del Indio, in the Argentine Chaco, and identified its putative sources using spatial analysis and demographic questionnaires. Peri-urban householders reported that 10% of their premises had triatomines, whereas T. infestans was collected by timed manual searches or community-based surveillance in only nine (3%) houses. Trypanosoma cruzi-infected T. infestan

Assessment of the short-term systemic effect of and acute phase response to mulesing and other options for controlling breech flystrike in Merino lambs.

BACKGROUND: Mulesing is an important method of preventing flystrike of Merino sheep in Australia, but because there are important short-term welfare issues associated with mulesing, alternative methods of removing the skin folds for breech flystrike prevention are being investigated. OBJECTIVE: To examine the short-term systemic effects of mulesing and two proposed alternatives, compared with two control methods, for controlling breech flystrike. METHOD: The five treatment groups comprised 10 lambs each: (1) mulesing, (2) intradermal-cetrimide treatment, (3) clip application, (4) tail dockin

Epidemic of Plasmodium falciparum malaria involving substandard antimalarial drugs, Pakistan, 2003.

Because of instability in eastern Afghanistan, new refugees crossed into the federally administered tribal areas of northwestern Pakistan in 2002. In 2003, we investigated an epidemic of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in 1 of the camps. Incidence was 100.4 cases/1,000 person-years; in other nearby camps it was only 2.1/1,000 person-years. Anopheline mosquitoes were found despite an earlier spray campaign. Documented clinical failures at the basic health unit prompted a drug resistance survey of locally manufactured sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine used for routine treatment. The in vivo failure rate w

Triatoma dimidiata, domestic animals and acute Chagas disease: a 10-year follow-up after an eco-bio-social intervention.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is primarily transmitted by triatomine insects, including Triatoma dimidiata. In Central America, vector control programs have significantly reduced transmission; however, certain regions, such as Comapa municipality, department of Jutiapa, Guatemala, continue to experience persistent T. dimidiata infestation. This study presents a 10-year follow-up assessment of triatomine infestation, T. cruzi infection and acute Chagas disease cases after an eco-bio-social intervention. METHODS: Between June and August 2022, entomologica

Tobacco overexpressing β-ocimene induces direct and indirect responses against aphids in receiver tomato plants.

In the last decade plant-to-plant communication has received an increasing attention, particularly for the role of Volatile Organic Compounds as possible elicitors of plant defense. The role of β-ocimene as an interspecific elicitor of plant defense has been recently assessed in multitrophic systems including different plant species (Solanaceae, Poaceae, legumes) and different pest species including chewer insects and phytophagous mites. Both chewer insects and phytophagous mites are known to elicit specific plant defensive pathways which are different (at least in part) from those elicited by

Activity of Oyster Mushrooms, Genus Pleurotus (Agaricomycetes), on Lucilia cuprina (Diptera).

Lucilia cuprina is a vector of important diseases in humans and animals that causes myiasis in sheep, leading to enormous damage to the sheep sector. Chemical products are used to control these flies; however, there are reports of resistance in addition to these products causing toxicity to the environment, humans, and animals, so alternative controls have been studied to reduce these impacts. Pleurotus spp. are basidiomycete fungi and present bioactive compounds with medicinal properties. Due to the potential use of fungi to control Diptera, this study aimed to verify the activity of Pleurotu

Assessing the oral toxicity of acetamiprid, spinosad, cypermethrin, and pyrethrins in the invasive hornet Vespa velutina nigrithorax.

The yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina subs. nigrithorax Buysson, 1905, is an invasive species in Europe, posing substantial ecological and economic threats. Its biology and behavior, marked by rapid reproduction and aggressive predation, endanger native insects. This has negative impacts on agriculture, biodiversity, and human safety. Effective control is therefore essential to prevent and minimize its spread and ecological impact. This study assessed the acute oral toxicity of four commercial insecticide formulations containing acetamiprid, spinosad, cypermethrin, and a mixture of natural

Structured missingness in biomedical research.

Antipathogen defense; b-caryophyllene; vector-virus mutualism Plants respond to insect herbivory by producing and releasing distinctive blends of volatile compounds. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) serve several roles, including direct defense through toxic or repellent effects on herbivores and indirect defense by attracting the herbivores' natural enemies (Bleeker et al. 2009; Veyrat et al. 2016). HIPVs also act as warning signals, informing undamaged tissues within the same plant and nearby plants of a pending insect attack (Heil and Bueno 2007). HIPVs are mostly composed of

Incompatible Aedes aegypti male releases as an intervention to reduce mosquito population-A field trial in Puerto Rico.

Mosquito-transmitted viruses such as dengue are a global and growing public health challenge. Without widely available vaccines, mosquito control is the primary tool for fighting the spread of these viruses. New mosquito control technologies are needed to complement existing methods, given current challenges with scalability, acceptability, and effectiveness. A field trial was conducted in collaboration with the Communities Organized to Prevent Arboviruses project in Ponce, Puerto Rico, to measure entomological and epidemiological effects of reducing Aedes aegypti populations using Wolbachia i

Assessment of experimental Bt events against fall armyworm and corn earworm in field corn.

Performance of experimental Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) MON events alone and pyramided with MON810 were evaluated over 3 yr in Georgia and Alabama. Ability of events to prevent whorl defoliation by the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), and natural ear feeding damage by the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) was assessed. In each year, near-isogenic hybrids with novel single transformation events and crosses pyramided with the MON810 event were compared with the standard single MON810 event and nontransformed susceptible control. Events were tested for resistance to whorl

Millworkers' asthma: allergic responses to the grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius).

Two laboratory workers, who spent a considerable time each day handling grain infested by the grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius), developed allergic responses to this insect varying from rhinitis and pruritus to marked asthma. These findings suggested that weevil protein present in mill dust could result in sensitization in those exposed continuously. A pilot study was therefore undertaken on 75 volunteer millworkers to determine whether such sensitivity existed. A millworker was defined as anyone who worked in a flour mill or mill producing animal feed from mixed cereals, or who worked in gr

Sulfasalazine-double stranded ribonucleic acid nanoparticle for controlling Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are vectors for dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses, which threaten over half the world's population. Therefore, new techniques are needed to control vector mosquitoes. The present study aimed to control female Ae. aegypti by targeting 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) and ecdysone receptor (EcR), which could potentially disrupt egg development, using sulfasalazine (SSZ)-double-stranded RNA (ds-RNA) nanoparticles (NPs). METHODS: The SSZ-dsRNA NPs are characterized by light microscopy, field emission scanning electron micro

Risk and protective factors for ASF in domestic pigs and wild boar in the EU, and mitigation measures for managing the disease in wild boar.

Five epidemiological aspects of ASF were evaluated using literature reviews, field studies, questionnaires and mathematical models. First, a literature review and a case-control study in commercial pig farms emphasised the importance of biosecurity and farming practices, including the spread of manure around farms and the use of bedding material as risk factors, while the use of insect nets was a protective factor. Second, although wild boar density is a relevant known factor, the statistical and mechanistic models did not show a clear and consistent effect of wild boar density on ASF epidemio

Control efficiency and mechanism of spinetoram seed-pelleting against the striped flea beetle Phyllotreta striolata.

The striped flea beetle (SFB, Phyllotreta striolata) can cause serious harm to cruciferous crops in both the larval and adult stages. Presently, there are no other sustainable alternatives to the use of chemical pesticides for controlling SFB infestation. In this study, the use of a seed-pelletized coating of spinetoram effectively reduced the numbers of SFB and its feedings on the flowering cabbage seedlings, whereas, in combination with the insect-proof net, it controlled the SFB infestation throughout the cabbage growth period. The analysis of the pesticide residues in soil and different ca

Optimization and Validation of HS-GC/MS Method for the Controlled Release Study of Microencapsulated Specific Bioattractants for Target-Plaguicide Production.

Insect plagues are a problem often hard to solve due to the harmful effects caused by the pesticides used to combat them. Consequently, the pesticide market is increasingly trying to develop new technologies to prevent the unwanted effects that common plague treatments usually bring with them. In this work, four specific bioattractants of Musca domestica, extracted from fungi (β-ocimene, phenol, p-cresol, and indole) were microencapsulated with β-cyclodextrin in order to produce an economically and environmentally sustainable bait containing biocides in the near future. Cyclodextrins will reta

Effects of BmKIT3R gene transfer on the development and survival of silkworm Bombyx mori.

To verify the effects of gain-of-function mutation of the BmKIT3(R) gene (from the Chinese scorpion Buthus martensii Karsch) on the development and survival rate of insects and to explore a novel strategy for pest control, the effects of BmKIT3(R) gene transfer on the development and survival rate of silkworms were investigated. A novel transgenic vector derived from the piggyBac transposon with the BmKIT3(R) gene controlled by the Bmhsp20.4 promoter was transferred into silkworm eggs. Transgenic silkworms were obtained after screening with GFP and G418 antibiotics and verification by PCR and

Functional analysis of Sirt5 in the effect of azadirachtin on the intestinal injury of Spodoptera litura.

Azadirachtin, a major botanical insecticide, is widely recognized as a sustainable alternative to synthetic pesticides, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying its effects on insect hosts remain poorly understood. Transcriptomic analysis, RT-PCR, and qPCR revealed significant upregulation of Sirt5 in the midgut following azadirachtin exposure. In the present study, we investigated the role of Sirt5, a key regulator of metabolic and stress responses, in mediating midgut damage in Spodoptera litura under azadirachtin stress. Functional assays showed that overexpression of Sirt5 in SpLi-221 cells
