The dependent personality and interpersonal problems.

At the core of the dependent personality disorder lies an excessive reliance on other people for support, direction, and nurturance. However, because of their interpersonal style, many patients high in dependency have difficulties establishing and maintaining close interpersonal relationships. The present study examined interpersonal problems related to the dependent personality disorder. The relationships between dependency and interpersonal problems were examined in 43 adult psychiatric inpatients and 66 nonpatient adults. All subjects were assessed for social functioning in terms of social

Parent and child neurocognitive functioning predict response to behavioral parent training for youth with ADHD.

Parental cognitive functioning is thought to play a key role in parenting behavior and may inform response to behavioral intervention. This open-label pilot study examined the extent to which parent and child cognition impacted response to behavioral parent training for children with ADHD. Fifty-four participants (27 parent-child dyads; Mages = 10.6 and 45.2 for children and parents, respectively) completed tasks assessing visuospatial and phonological working memory, inhibitory control, and choice-reaction speed at pre-treatment. Drift diffusion modeling decomposed choice-reaction time data i

A comparison of children affected by prenatal alcohol exposure and attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder.

Behavioral deficits are often noted in children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and other individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure, including mental retardation, learning problems, social problems, and deficits in attention. Because attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been diagnosed so frequently in children with FAS and other alcohol related birth defects, there has been speculation that alcohol is an etiological factor in ADHD. To examine the relationship between behavior characteristics of children with fetal alcohol exposure and those seen in children with a diagnosis

Inhibitory control effects in adolescent binge eating and consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and snacks.

Inhibitory control and sensitivity to reward are relevant to the food choices individuals make frequently. An imbalance of these systems can lead to deficits in decision-making that are relevant to food ingestion. This study evaluated the relationship between dietary behaviors - binge eating and consumption of sweetened beverages and snacks - and behavioral control processes among 198 adolescents, ages 14 to 17. Neurocognitive control processes were assessed with the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a generic Go/No-Go task, and a food-specific Go/No-Go task. The food-specific version directly ties th

Infant temperament, early-childhood parenting, and early-adolescent development: Testing alternative models of Parenting × Temperament interaction.

Here we evaluate whether infant difficult temperament (6 months) functions as a vulnerability or more general plasticity factor when investigating effects of early-childhood parenting (8-42 months) on both positive and negative early-adolescent socioemotional development (age 8-11 years). Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, N = 14,541) and a re-parameterized model-testing approach to distinguish alternative person × environment conceptual models, results indicated that temperament × parenting interacted in predicting externalizing (i.e., hyperactivity,

Joint statement--Learning disabilities, dyslexia, and vision.

Learning disabilities, including reading disabilities, are commonly diagnosed in children. Their etiologies are multifactorial, reflecting genetic influences and dysfunction of brain systems. Learning disabilities are complex problems that require complex solutions. Early recognition and referral to qualified educational professionals for evidence-based evaluations and treatments seem necessary to achieve the best possible outcome. Most experts believe that dyslexia is a language-based disorder. Vision problems can interfere with the process of learning; however, vision problems are not the ca

The outcomes of psychotherapy with adolescents: a practitioner-friendly research review.

This article summarizes the outcome findings of psychotherapy with adolescents through an examination of the research literature. In this problem-focused review of the research literature, we consider adolescent treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, multiple problems of adolescence, and health risk behaviors. The evidence base for the effectiveness of various psychotherapies for adolescents is mixed. Psychotherapy in general has been a ripe field in which unsupported approaches have grown, and this is certainly true for psychotherapeutic i

Factors influencing compliance in schizophrenia patients.

Scientifically, compliance can be expressed as the ratio between an observed treatment behavior and given treatment standards. Although the factors that influence compliance often overlap or influence each other, it is possible to differentiate between factors that are related to the patient, the patient's environment, the treating clinician, and treatment itself. Although this differentiation is in some ways artificial, it may aid the practicing clinician in assessing the various reasons why a particular patient is likely to develop or has already developed compliance problems. The fact that

Psychopathology and developmental delay in homeless children: a pilot study.

The authors report a survey of 50 parent-child pairs from homeless families housed in New York City hotels. The purpose of the survey was to determine the extent of emotional or behavioral disturbances and of developmental delays in homeless children aged 4 through 10 years, the presence of depression or a history of depression or other psychiatric problems in the parents of these children, and to determine whether the children and adults had mental health needs. The results indicate that nearly all of the children showed some difficulties. Sixty-one percent of the children had receptive verba

Psychosocial functioning in children of alcoholic fathers, depressed fathers and control fathers.

Children of alcoholics are often viewed as having major psychological problems resulting from their interactions within disturbed family structures. Most studies, however, have selected alcoholics from multiproblem families in which it is difficult to disentangle the impact of alcoholism from concomitant psychosocial and psychiatric problems. Further, few studies have used psychometrically sound measures of alcoholism or child functioning. In this investigation, children of alcoholic, depressed and control (social drinkers and not depressed) fathers were assessed by parents on the Child Behavi

Alcohol dependence and criminal behavior: preliminary results of an association study of environmental and genetic factors in an Italian male population.

The aim of this study is to propose an innovative approach evaluating the connection between alcohol use disorders and criminal behavior. The research, structured as a case-control study, was based on the analysis of environmental (social variables) and genetic factors (single nucleotide polymorphisms of glutamic acid decarboxylase) in a population (N = 173) of Italian alcohol-dependent men. Group 1 (N = 47, convicted subjects) was compared with Group 2 (N = 126, no previous criminal conduct). Grade repetition, work problems, and drug problems were statistically associated with criminal behavi

Behavioral and psychiatric features of Sturge-Weber syndrome.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is characterized by seizures, port-wine birthmarks, vascular malformations, and rarely studied psychobehavioral features. This study describes a small group of outpatients (N = 16, age, 3-34 years) with Sturge-Weber syndrome seeking medical services (due to seizures, ophthalmological, and dermatological problems among others). The patients were screened for psychiatric diagnoses. The most frequent diagnoses were mood disorder (31%), disruptive behavior disorder (25%), and adjustment disorder (25%). A substance-related disorder was the most frequent in adults (67%).

Behavioral responses of healthy Chinese siblings to the stress of childhood cancer in the family: a longitudinal study.

Advances in the treatment of childhood malignancies have dramatically altered survival rates of children with cancer, changing the nature and scope of stressors that their families encounter. Very little is known about how childhood cancer affects healthy Chinese siblings and what can be done to help children adjust to this stressful life event. The cognitive theory of psychological stress was the framework for this study. The purpose of this research was to explore behavioral responses of healthy Chinese siblings in Taiwan to childhood cancer in the family and to examine the factors that may

Sexual Problems Predict PTSD and Depression Symptom Change Among Male OEF/OIF Veterans Completing Exposure Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: A growing literature documents frequent sexual problems among Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there has been no examination of how (1) sexual problems may be affected by evidenced-based psychotherapy for PTSD or (2) how the presence of sexual problems might impact effectiveness of evidenced-based psychotherapy for PTSD. As such, the present study investigated associations among symptoms of PTSD, depression, and problems with sexual desire and arousal among 45 male OEF/OIF veterans receiving behavioral activati

Interparental hostility and children's externalizing symptoms: Attention to anger as a mediator.

This study examined children's attention biases to negative emotional stimuli as mediators of associations between interparental hostility and children's externalizing symptoms. Participants included 243 children (Mage = 4.60 years) and their parents and teachers across three annual measurement occasions. Cross-lagged latent change analyses revealed that the association between interparental hostility and children's externalizing symptoms was mediated by children's attention to angry, but not sad or fearful, adult faces. Consistent with defensive exclusion models, the multimethod, multi-inform

Does Anxiety Modify the Risk for, or Severity of, Conduct Problems Among Children With Co-Occurring ADHD: Categorical and Dimensional and Analyses.

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to examine whether anxiety modifies the risk for, or severity of, conduct problems in children with ADHD. METHOD: Assessment included both categorical and dimensional measures of ADHD, anxiety, and conduct problems. Analyses compared conduct problems between children with ADHD features alone versus children with co-occurring ADHD and anxiety features. RESULTS: When assessed by dimensional rating scales, results showed that compared with children with ADHD alone, those children with ADHD co-occurring with anxiety are at risk for more intense conduct problems.
