A case of hairy cell leukaemia complicated as a terminal event by massive retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy is described. The patient had recently been treated with lithium carbonate and had previously been demonstrated to suffer from a systemic vasculitis, either or both of which may have contributed to the development of this rare complication.

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage can present a difficult diagnostic dilemma. We present 4 illustrative cases within the last 2 years at our institutions. Excluding traumatic injury to the retroperitoneum and abdominal aortic aneurysms, about 75 per cent of the cases are related to neoplasms or vascular anomalies. PURPOSE: Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis is an uncommon disease of unknown etiology that may involve the ureters and other retroperitoneal structures. Surgical ureterolysis as well as medical treatment with steroids have been used to treat these patients. However, there is no agreement as to the dose and duration of steroid.
