The distal fascicle of the anterior inferior tibio-fibular ligament as a cause of anterolateral ankle impingement: results of arthroscopic resection.

We arthroscopically resected the impinged distal fascicle of the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AIT-FL) in 21 patients (mean age 31 (11-68) years, 14 women) with chronic ankle pain after an ankle sprain. Clinical tests revealed moderate laxity in 2 and severe laxity in another 2, the remaining 17 ankles showing only mild laxity. During arthroscopy, an impinging distal fascicle of the AITFL was found in all cases. Following anterolateral synovectomy, the fascicle was excised. At the follow-up after mean 3 (2-4) years, good-to-excellent results were obtained in 17 patients. 19 patients

Volleyball injuries presenting in casualty: a prospective study.

During 1986, all sports injuries (n = 5222) were prospectively recorded at the two casualty departments in Arhus, Denmark. Volleyball injuries (n = 278) accounted for 5.3% of all sports injuries. An evaluation of the rehabilitation period and the consequences of the injuries was undertaken by questionnaire three years after the injury. The injury incidence was 1.9 injuries/1000 inhabitants/year. Hand, finger, and ankle sprains were the most frequent injuries. Female players had significantly more hand/finger injuries than male players, who incurred more ankle/foot injuries. Knee (6%) and ankle

Sports medicine for the internist.

Because of increasing participation in leisure sports and exercise rehabilitation programs, many patients are developing nonsurgical, soft tissue overuse syndromes. Many of these musculoskeletal problems arise because of underlying biomechanical difficulties, training errors, or improper use of equipment. Epidemiologic observations reveal that these individuals frequently visit a general medical practitioner before seeking the advice of an orthopedic specialist. Prompt diagnosis simply requires an appreciation of anatomy and an analytic understanding of sports biomechanics. Although compulsive

Rupture of the flexor tendons of the little finger in fractures of the hook of the hamate bone. Report of two cases.

Two cases of rupture of the flexor tendons of the little finger associated with a fracture of the hook of the hamate bone are presented. The preoperative diagnosis had not been made. Excision of the fractured hook and repair of the tendons by a short graft from the palmaris longus in one case and by the transfer of the superficial flexor of the ring finger in the other case gave a good final result. The authors remark on the rarity of reports of this fracture in the literature, the frequent occurrence of nonunion and the two complications which are exceptional; rupture of the flexor tendons an

Trends of ankle arthroscopy in Italy: Analysis of an official national database.

OBJECTIVES: Ankle arthroscopy has become increasingly popular as a less invasive surgical diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for a variety ankle disorder previously managed with open surgery. Despite literature reports encouraging outcomes and low complication rates, nationwide trends in ankle arthroscopy have been poorly investigated. To fully understand the burden of an emerging surgical approach as well as helping to create global standards for the diagnosis and treatment of ankle diseases, this study aimed to evaluate the incidence and demographics of patients undergoing ankle arthroscop

Orthopaedic Injuries Associated With Cell Phone Use Resulting in Emergency Department Visits: A 20-Year Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cell phones are an integral part of daily life but are distractors that can contribute to injury. The present study uses a large national emergency department (ED) database to evaluate the frequency, anatomic location, and type of injuries associated with cell phone use. We hypothesize that orthopaedic injuries related to cell phone use have increased over time and affect certain body parts and age groups more than others. METHODS: The 1999 to 2018 Nation Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried for cell phone-related injuries leading to ED visits (injuries to the head

Acute T-cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia Presenting with Cardiac Encasement and Pericardial Tamponade.

Recurrent peroneal tendon subluxation is an uncommon sports-related injury. The retrofibular groove is formed not by the concavity of the fibula itself, but by a relatively pronounced ridge of collagenous soft tissue blended with the periosteum that extends along the posterolateral lip of the distal fibula. The shape of the groove is primarily determined by this thick fibrocartilagenous periosteal cushion, and not by the bone itself. The superior peroneal retinaculum is extremely variable in width, thickness and insertional patterns. Peroneal tendon subluxation is commonly associated with long

Deciphering acute shoulder trauma with normal initial X-ray: Contributions of ultrasonography and MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder trauma with normal radiographs is a frequent emergency presentation. The predominance of pain makes clinical examination unreliable, and complementary imaging is often needed for diagnosis. The aim of the present study was to assess the contribution of ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in deciphering such trauma. The study hypothesis was that MRI can confirm most diagnoses and reveal occult lesions. METHODS: 48 patients with a median age of 33 years (IQR, 22-48.75), admitted to the Emergency Department between February and September 2016, were pr
