Facial recognition in late-life insomnia: Preserved positivity bias and associations with negative emotions.

BACKGROUND: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is essential for social functioning. Although aging is typically associated with reduced FER performance, recognition of positive emotions (e.g., happiness) often remains intact-an effect attributed to an age-related positivity bias. However, insomnia, which is highly prevalent in older adults, may disrupt emotional processing and compromise this typically well-preserved component of FER. Yet, few studies have examined the relationship between insomnia and FER specifically in late life. METHODS: Fifty-four older adults with insomnia and fifty healt

Inflexible Orbitofrontal Cortex Functional Connectivity From Rest to Acute Stress in Alcohol Use Disorder.

Adaptive stress coping is often impaired in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). This process relies on neurocircuitry involved in emotional and behavioural regulation, particularly the ventromedial PFC (vmPFC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), along with limbic and ventral striatal regions (e.g., amygdala, hippocampus and nucleus accumbens). These systems are highly sensitive to the neurotoxic effects of alcohol, which may disrupt their ability to flexibly adapt in response to acute stress. This study investigated state-dependent changes (termed 'flexibility') in vmPFC-limbic/striatal a

Beyond support: exploring the dynamic and static biomechanical changes induced by preventive ankle taping: a novel cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In sports, 80% of all ankle injuries are sprains of the external compartment. Functional bandages are usually used preventively, specially in individuals with a history of lateral ankle injuries. To this day, the actual benefits of such taping remain unknown as important modifications are introduced in the ankle biomechanics. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to describe the biomechanical processes underlying these effects, such as modification during stance times, balance, contact surface and maximum and average pressures in the rearfoot, forefoot and midfoot, using a

Relationship of Gait and Balance to Successful Spinal Cord Stimulation Trials in Patients Being Treated for Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome Type 2.

BACKGROUND: Persistent spinal pain syndrome type 2 (PSPS2) is characterized by chronic pain after spine surgery, with spinal cord stimulation (SCS) being a common treatment when conservative measures fail. SCS modulates pain and improves functional outcomes, but approximately 40% of patients receiving an SCS trial do not experience adequate relief. Most SCS studies depend on patient-reported measures, necessitating incorporation of objective assessments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate differences in functional gait and balance outcomes between patients in whom SCS trial succeeds a

Neural evidence of core foundations and conceptual change in preschool numeracy.

Symbolic numeracy first emerges as children learn the meanings of number words and how to use them to precisely count sets of objects. This development starts before children enter school and forms a foundation for lifelong mathematics achievement. Despite its importance, exactly how children acquire this basic knowledge is unclear. Here we test competing theories of early number learning by measuring event-related brain potentials during a novel number word-quantity comparison task in 3-4-year-old preschool children (N = 128). We find several qualitative differences in neural processing of nu

Pedagogical sentiment analysis based on the BERT-CNN-BiGRU-attention model in the context of intercultural communication barriers.

Amid the wave of globalization, the phenomenon of cultural amalgamation has surged in frequency, bringing to the fore the heightened prominence of challenges inherent in cross-cultural communication. To address these challenges, contemporary research has shifted its focus to human-computer dialogue. Especially in the educational paradigm of human-computer dialogue, analysing emotion recognition in user dialogues is particularly important. Accurately identify and understand users' emotional tendencies and the efficiency and experience of human-computer interaction and play. This study aims to i

The Biomechanical Burden of Orthopaedic Procedures and Musculoskeletal Injuries Sustained by Orthopaedic Surgeons: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic surgeons are at high risk for experiencing work-related musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries and chronic pain due to repetitive large magnitude forces, altered posture from lead vests, and prolonged irregular body positions. We sought to synthesize available evidence regarding (1) the biomechanics of orthopaedic surgery and (2) MSK injuries sustained by orthopaedic surgeons with subsequent treatment and consequences. METHODS: To conduct this systematic review, we queried 4 databases (PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, and Web of Science) for original research studies presenting on the

Loaded forced-marching shifts mechanical contributions proximally and disrupts stride-to-stride joint work modulation in recruit aged women.

BACKGROUND: Military personnel in combat roles often perform gait tasks with additional load, which can affect the contributions of joint mechanical work (positive and negative). Furthermore, different locomotion patterns can also affect joint specific work contributions. While mean behavior of joint work is important to understanding gait, changes in joint kinetic modulation, or the regulation/control of stride-to-stride joint work variability is necessary to elucidate locomotor system function. Suboptimal modulation exhibited as a stochastic time-series (large fluctuation followed by an oppo

How the COVID-19 infection tsunami revolutionized the work of respiratory physiotherapists: an experience from Northern Italy.

Due to COVID-19 outbreak, to lighten the burden of acute and critical care hospitals, some respiratory rehabilitation departments have been used to host patients with COVID-19 in the post-acute phase. This new and unexpected situation required a change of roles and scheduling of the rehabilitation teams. In this manuscript we describe the unexpected and urgent organizational change of the Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation (CPR) service during the COVID-19 emergency in a Northern Italian rehabilitation hospital, focusing on the Respiratory Physiotherapists' (RPTs) role. A quick three-days complet

A New Wave of Vaccines for Non-Communicable Diseases: What Are the Regulatory Challenges?

Vaccines represent one of the greatest achievements of medicine, dramatically reducing the incidence of serious or life-threatening infectious diseases and allowing people to live longer, healthier lives. As life expectancy has increased, however, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and diabetes has increased. This shifting burden of disease has heightened the already urgent need for therapies that treat or prevent NCDs, a need that is now being met with increased efforts to develop NCD vaccines. Like traditional vaccines, NCD vaccines

The frequency of horizontal saccades in near and far symmetrical disparity vergence.

In a natural environment, saccade and vergence eye movements shift gaze in different directions and distances. In a laboratory setting, targets can be positioned precisely to elicit symmetrical vergence movements; however, saccades occur during the vergence movement even though the stimulus should not stimulate a saccadic response. These saccades may facilitate the response when the kinematics of the vergence component are modest as indicated by reduced velocities. Hence, the purpose of this study is to assess whether the frequency of saccades within vergence responses are correlated with verg

A study of systems for delivering antigens and plasmid DNA for intranasal immunization against tick-borne encephalitis virus.

Our previous studies indicated the possibility for some neurotropic viruses to spread into the brain of immune animals through the olfactory pathway. Thus, nasal mucosa in the olfactory region is likely to be a promising target for mucosal immunization to protect the CNS from neurotropic viral infections. THE MAIN IDEA OF THE RESEARCH: Intranasal immunization inducing mucosal and systemic immune responses blocks the propagation of neurotropic virus into the brain via the olfactory pathway and neutralizes the multiplication of virus in visceral organs, allowing more effective protection against

A primate genesis model of focal dystonia and repetitive strain injury: I. Learning-induced dedifferentiation of the representation of the hand in the primary somatosensory cortex in adult monkeys.

In this study we tested a neuroplasticity/learning origins hypothesis for repetitive strain injuries (RSIs), including occupationally induced focal dystonia. Repetitive movements produced in a specific form and in an appropriate behavioral context cause a degradation of the sensory feedback information controlling fine motor movements, resulting in the "learned" genesis of RSIs. Two adult New World owl monkeys were trained at a behavioral task that required them to maintain an attended grasp on a hand grip that repetitively and rapidly (20 msec) opened and closed over short distances. The monk

A curriculum-guided unified framework for robust unsupervised domain adaptation on multi-cohort Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Current artificial intelligence (AI) models for Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are significantly impeded by domain shift, and performance often decreases due to heterogeneity in imaging protocols and scanners across hospitals. While existing unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods combining self-training and adversarial training enhance model generalizability, their dependence on pseudo-labels often introduces confirmation bias from noisy predictions. This study aimed to mitigate pseudo-label noise, enhance domain-invariant feature lear

Multistage Electrocardiographic Profiling for Mental Stress-Induced Myocardial Ischemia in Women: A Prospective, Age-Matched Cohort Study in China.

BACKGROUND: Mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia is often clinically silent and associated with increased cardiovascular risk, particularly in women. Conventional ECG-based detection is limited, while the reference standard, positron emission tomography/computed tomography, is costly and less accessible. We aimed to characterize mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia using multistage ECG analysis and machine learning to improve early, noninvasive detection. METHODS: We enrolled 2 female cohorts (18-75 years) from a single-center tertiary hospital in Guangzhou, China: a study cohort (2

Mapping assessment practices in DanceSport: a Human-In-The-Loop systematic review.

BACKGROUND: DanceSport is an aesthetic sport that combines athletic execution, artistic expression, musicality, and partner interaction. Although formal adjudication remains central to DanceSport competition, recent studies have increasingly explored technology-assisted approaches to provide more measurable and traceable evidence. However, the field lacks a focused synthesis explaining what major themes have emerged, how these themes have developed, what technologies have been applied, and how existing systems have been validated. METHODS: This study conducted a systematic review enhanced by

Robust and accurate multimodal information extraction from tobacco box labels using MLDP.

With the advancement of smart re-baking factories and the accelerating digital transformation of agriculture, tobacco re-baking is facing an urgent need to shift from manual inspection to intelligent automated systems for quality traceability and information management. However, traditional cigarette box label information extraction methods still suffer from limited efficiency, insufficient accuracy, and poor robustness under real industrial conditions. To address these challenges, we propose MLDP (Multimodal Learning for Document Processing), a multimodal framework tailored for robust informa
