Are early grammatical and phonological working memory abilities affected by preterm birth?

UNLABELLED: There have been few investigations of the effects of very immature preterm birth on specific linguistic competencies and phonological working memory at preschool age. Study 1 aimed to investigate early grammatical abilities in very immature healthy preterms, taking into account their cognitive development and biological and social factors. The linguistic and cognitive differences found between preterms and fullterms led to investigate in Study 2 the role of phonological working memory on preterms' grammatical development. Very immature preterm birth resulted to affect grammatical,

Transcallosal interforniceal-transforaminal approach for removing lesions occupying the third ventricular space: clinical and neuropsychological results.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to describe the clinical and prospective neuropsychological results for our group of 30 patients who were treated using a transcallosal interforniceal-transforaminal microsurgical approach. METHODS: The transcallosal interforniceal and transcallosal-transforaminal approaches were used to treat 30 patients with space-occupying lesions located in the anterior part of the third ventricle. We used a modified anterior transcallosal microsurgical approach, as described recently. The patients underwent extensive, pre- and postoperative, prospective neurops

Object identification deficits in dementia of the Alzheimer type: combined effects of semantic and visual proximity.

Identification deficits in dementia of the Alzheimer Type (DAT) often target specific classes of objects, sparing others. Using line drawings to uncover the etiology of such category-specific deficits may be untenable because the underlying shape primitives used to differentiate one line drawing from another are unspecified, and object form is yoked to object meaning. We used computer generated stimuli with empirically specifiable properties in a paradigm that decoupled form and meaning. In Experiment 1 visually similar or distinct blobs were paired with semantically close or disparate labels,

Relative timing of neuronal activity in distinct temporal lobe areas during a recognition memory task for words.

Nine neurologically normal volunteers engaged in a recognition memory task for visually presented words while the magnetic flux normal to the scalp surface was measured with a whole-head neuromagnetometer. The relative timing of activity occurring during the task in different brain areas was determined. Occipital lobe areas became active first, followed by basal temporal areas. Temporoparietal and medial temporal areas became active next, during later portions of the recorded epoch, and appeared to activate in concert. Except for the occipital lobe, activity was predominantly in the left hemis

Differential sensitivity of structural, diffusion, and resting-state functional MRI for detecting brain alterations and verbal memory impairment in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is known to affect large-scale gray and white matter networks, and these network changes likely contribute to the verbal memory impairments observed in many patients. In this study, we investigate multimodal imaging patterns of brain alterations in TLE and evaluate the sensitivity of different imaging measures to verbal memory impairment. METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (vMRI), and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) were evaluated in 46 patients with TLE and 33 healthy controls to measure patterns of m

Decline in executive functions and speed in suspected low-grade gliomas: A 3-year follow-up of a clinical cohort.

Changes over time in information processing speed and executive functions (EFs) were studied in patients with suspected low-grade gliomas (LGG) 3 years after diagnosis. Using a person-oriented approach, the study aimed at focusing solely on two cognitive domains known to be significant in the understanding of the impact of white matter diseases. The Barkley's hybrid model of EFs was used as a theoretical framework for the evaluation of EFs. The majority of the patients showed a decline in at least one of these two cognitive domains indicating that the progress of diffuse brain injury cannot be

Improvement in verbal memory following SSRI augmentation of antipsychotic treatment is associated with changes in the expression of mRNA encoding for the GABA-A receptor and BDNF in PMC of schizophrenic patients.

Verbal memory impairment in schizophrenia is associated with abnormalities in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) systems. Recent evidence from animal and clinical studies that adding fluvoxamine to antipsychotics alters the expression of transcripts encoding for the GABA-A receptor and BDNF led us to postulate that fluvoxamine augmentation may improve memory in schizophrenia. To test this, we examined the effect of add-on fluvoxamine on verbal memory and other cognitive functions and related it to the expression of mRNA coding for the GABA-A recep

Lies tell the truth about cognitive dysfunction in essential tremor: an experimental deception study with the guilty knowledge task.

BACKGROUND: Research conducted in the past decade challenges the traditional view that essential tremor (ET) is characterised exclusively by movement disorder, and increasingly shows that these patients have deficits in cognitive and behavioural functioning. The available evidence suggests that this impairment might arise from dysfunction in either the fronto-subcortical or cortico-cerebellar circuits. Although abnormalities in the fronto-subcortical circuits could imply difficulty in lying, no study has investigated deception in patients with ET. AIMS: To examine the cognitive functions regu

In search of the perfect phenotype: an analysis of linkage and association studies of reading and reading-related processes.

Reading ability and specific reading disability (SRD) are complex traits involving several cognitive processes and are shaped by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental forces. Linkage studies of these traits have identified several susceptibility loci. Association studies have gone further in detecting candidate genes that might underlie these signals. These results have been obtained in samples of mainly European ancestry, which vary in their languages, inclusion criteria, and phenotype assessments. Such phenotypic heterogeneity across samples makes understanding the relationship be

Language performance in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment: a comparative review.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) manifests as memory impairment in the absence of dementia and progresses to Alzheimer's disease (AD) at a rate of around 15% per annum, versus 1-2% in the general population. It thus constitutes a primary target for investigation of early markers of AD. Language deficits occur early in AD, and performance on verbal tasks is an important diagnostic criterion for both AD and MCI. We review language performance in MCI, compare these findings to those seen in AD, and identify the primary issues in understanding language performance in MCI and selecting tasks with di

Interactions of the hippocampal system and the prefrontal cortex in learning language-like rules.

One of the most influential views on the hippocampal function suggests that this brain region is critically involved in relational memory processing, that is, binding converging inputs to mediate the representation of relationships among the constituents of episodes. It has been proposed that this binding is automatic and obligatory during learning and remembering In addition, neuroimaging studies have highlighted the importance of the prefrontal cortex, in learning, memory, and language processing. However, the posited importance of hippocampal-prefrontal interaction remains to be empirically

Act Environmentally When Peers Do So? The Effect of Friends' and Strangers' Resource Extraction on Preschool Children's Pro-Environmental Behavior.

Throughout childhood development, children learn social norms by observing how others behave. The current study used an adapted simplified public forest task, in which groups of three children sharing 30 trees, to investigate whether observing peers-friends or strangers-who demonstrated a lower-resource-extraction norm (i.e., cutting 4/5 trees) or a higher-resource-extraction norm (i.e., cutting 15/16 trees) would influence children's pro-environmental behavior. Participants were 5-year-old and 6-year-old children from kindergarten. Information about peers' resource extraction was presented ve

Consequences of value-directed remembering in working memory on memory strength and memory interference.

Critical details are important to remember, whereas trivial information is not. The present research examined whether there were differences in relative susceptibility to proactive interference (PI) for high-value, low-value, zero-value, or negative-value information within working memory (WM) in younger adults. PI occurs when previously learned information disrupts current performance. Across four experiments, participants (N = 255) completed a recent probes WM task, where verbal memoranda were arbitrarily assigned point values after encoding and memory was tested after a 3-s delay. A surpris
