Primary amebic meningoencephalitis and granulomatous amebic meningoencephalitis are central nervous system infections caused by free-living amebae. We describe the neuroimaging findings in 5 such cases on CT and MR imaging. A spectrum of findings was seen in the form of multifocal parenchymal lesions, pseudotumoral lesions, meningeal exudates, hemorrhagic infarcts, and necrosis in the brain. Familiarity with the imaging findings is important for the diagnosis and management of this nearly universally fatal disease.

A prospective study of 24 contact lens patients with culture- or histopathology-proven microbial keratitis was performed between July and December 1987 to determine associated lens care practices and patterns of lens care product contamination. A questionnaire was used to document methods of lens care. Bacterial cultures were performed on all available contact lenses, lens cases, and solutions (including saline, disinfectant, daily cleaner and wetting agents), in addition to standard smears and cultures of the corneal ulcer. Failure to follow standard recommendations regarding contact lens car

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to Naegleria fowleri, the etiologic agent of primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), have been produced and used as probes to identify N. fowleri amebae in brain sections of patients who died of that disease. These MAbs were characterized for their specificity by the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIF), dot immunobinding assay (DIBA), and enzyme-linked immunotransfer blot technique (EITB). The MAbs reacted intensely with all strains of N. fowleri tested originating from different geographic areas in the IIF and DIBA tests, but showed no reactivity with four o

The anti-amoebic action of the bipyridyl antibiotic caerulomycin was assessed in vitro and in vivo using various strains of Entamoeba histolytica from polyxenic, axenic and monoxenic cultures. Minimum inhibition concentrations of caerulomycin (metronidazole) were 7.5 (5), 15.6(1.95) and 60 (2.5) micrograms/ml against polyxenic, axenic and monoxenic cultures of E. histolytica, respectively. The ED50 values ascertained in golden hamsters (extraintestinal amoebiasis) and rats (intestinal amoebiasis) after the oral route were 136 and 199 mg/kg (X4), respectively. Metronidazole proved to be approxi

Clinical and brain biopsy or autopsy findings in six patients with Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis (GAE) due to acanthamoeba sp. were characterized by focal neurological symptoms, increased intracranial pressure, and focal neuroradiological findings. Craniotomies were performed because of the diagnostic possibility of a mass lesion such as a brain tumor or abscess. In four patients, frozen sections demonstrated free-living amebas. GAE may present as an acute or subacute intracerebral mass lesion with signs and symptoms of focal brain disease and should be differentiated from viral, bacterial

Metronidazole is a very commonly used drug for the treatment of ailments caused by bacteria and parasites. It can treat a vast array of cond … estigations, diagnosis of the amebic liver abscess was made on the basis of USG, serum serology for amebiasis IgG, and a CT scan. Consequently, the patient was started on the drug of choice for amebic liver abscess; IV metronidazole 1.5g/day divided over the day into three doses. Other drugs that were administered were pantoprazole, paracetamol, and ondanse …

BACKGROUND: Amebiasis is a protozoal infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica, while the morphologically indistinguishable E. dispar is considered as non-pathogenic. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays are necessary to differentiate both species. The most common clinical presentations of E. histolytica disease are amebic colitis and amebic liver abscess, but asymptomatic infection is also possible. We assessed the frequency and pattern of clinical symptoms and microscopic features in travelers/migrants associated with E. histolytica intestinal infection and compared them to those found in …
