Secondary abscess formation in pituitary adenoma after tooth extraction. Case report.

The presence of an abscess in a pituitary tumor is a very rare finding. The authors report the case of a 69-year-old man with a pituitary adenoma confirmed by neuroimaging results, in whom a high fever, meningismus, and left-sided ophthalmoplegia developed 4 days after tooth extraction. The results of serial cranial magnetic resonance imaging were highly indicative of an abscess formation within the pituitary adenoma. During surgery the tumor was approached transsphenoidally and removed. Histological examination confirmed the presence of an abscess formation within the pituitary adenoma. It is

[Orbital and intracranial complications of paranasal sinus inflammation].

The examination of 2251 patients with paranasal sinusitis has detected various rhinosinusogenic orbital and intracranial complications in 75 of them (3.3% of overall number of sinusitis patients). The complications were caused by acute and chronic paranasal sinusitis in 49 and 26 patients, respectively. 55 patients had orbital, 20--different intracranial complications. The treatment in most cases consists of emergency operation on the paranasal sinuses, in intracranial complications the surgeon opens dura mater of the anterior cranial fossa and prescribes massive antibacterial, dehydration, de

[A case report: abscess of the cavum septi pellucidi].

A rare case of an abscess in the cavum septi pellucidi (CSP) is described and previously reported cases are reviewed. A 60-year-old male was admitted to the hospital because a diagnosis of cerebellar hemisphere infarction was made on CT scan. Seven years earlier, the patient had undergone a craniotomy for aneurysm clipping, and a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt was installed for normal pressure hydrocephalus 14 days after the aneurysmal rupture. On his second hospitalization CT scan also demonstrated CSP but this was not associated with ventriculomegaly. He was placed on a rehabilitation regimen a

[Rhinocerebral mycoses caused by Mucoraceae species (mucormycosis). Case report and literature review].

According to the literature and on the basis of the case reported in this paper of rhinocerebral mucoraceae mycosis we summarize the characteristic features as follows: mucoraceae--mycoses--common, but wrong term: "mucormycoses"--are a group of infections caused by members of the family mucoraceae (Mucor, Rhizomucor, Rhizopus, Absidia species)--most frequently by Rhizopus species. Primarily the fungi enter the pharynx or nose, local infections or trauma being a prerequisite. The most important predisposing factor is diabetes mellitus. Invading the tissue and causing vascular thrombosis the inf

Epidural abscess following frontal sinusitis--demonstration of communication by epidural contrast medium and coronal computerized tomography.

A case of epidural abscess following sinusitis is presented with rhinorrhoea after irrigation of the abscess cavity postoperatively. Coronal computerized tomography and instillation of contrast medium through the catheter showed communication between epidural space and left frontal sinus.

Systemic nocardiosis in pregnancy. A case report.

Pregnancy in women with significant medical complications has become a part of modern obstetrics. We report a case of systemic nocardiosis in a gravida with sarcoidosis. The importance of aggressive management and the influence of pregnancy on antibiotic treatment are discussed.

Brainstem Cryptococcoma.

Cryptococcoma in central nervous system is a special form of cryptococcal infection that presents as occupying lesions in human brains. Usually, it happens in cerebral or cerebellar lobes. Brainstem cryptococcoma is extremely rare, as only a few cases were reported until now. Images of brainstem cryptococcoma are usually described as multiple or single heterogeneously rim-enhancing lesions with abscess-like signs in magnetic resonance imaging. However, isolated solid lesion that was homogeneously enhanced in brainstem and without any infectious disease characters has not been reported yet. Her

Bacillary angiomatosis triggered by severe trauma in a healthy Caucasian patient: A case report.

Bacillary angiomatosis represents a cutaneous and systemic infection caused by Bartonella species, typically described in the past in HIV-positive patients or associated with immunodeficiencies. More recent case reports had brought into attention the probability that this entity may manifest in otherwise healthy individuals, triggered by trauma and skin burns. The physiopathology of this neoproliferative process is based on the production of angiogenetic molecules, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and IL-8. In case of an inadequate treatment, the evolution can be fatal, with a

Cutaneous invasive aspergillosis in a patient with glioblastoma receiving long-term temozolomide and corticosteroid therapy.

Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain tumor that requires multidisciplinary treatment including adjuvant radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and adjunct corticosteroids. Temozolomide is a commonly used chemotherapy drug and frequently causes lymphocytopenia. We describe the case of a 67-year-old woman with cutaneous invasive aspergillosis who had received long-term temozolomide and corticosteroid therapy for glioblastoma. She presented with multiple indurations, erythema, and purpura, some of which produced purulent discharge, in the anterior abdomen. Extensive intra- or inter-muscular abscesses of the

Subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in immunocompetent patients: two new cases caused by Exophiala jeanselmei and Cladophialophora carrionii.

Phaeohyphomycosis is a distinct mycotic infection of the skin or internal organs caused by darkly pigmented (dematiaceous) fungi, which are widely distributed in the environment. Phaeohyphomycosis is most frequently an opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed patients (HIV, corticotherapy, transplant patients) or is frequently associated with chronic diseases and diabetes. The spectrum of the disease is broad and includes superficial infections, onychomycosis, subcutaneous infections, keratitis, allergic disease, pneumonia, brain abscesses and disseminated disease. Rarely, immunocompetent p…
