Occupational exposure to benzene in South Korea.

Benzene has been used in various industries as glues or solvents in Korea. Since 1981, a preparation containing more than 1% benzene is not allowed to be manufactured, used or dealt with in the workplace, except in laboratories and in those situations benzene must be used in a completely sealed process as specified in Industrial Safety and Health Act (ISHA). Claims for compensation of hematopoietic diseases related to benzene have been rising even though the work environment has been improved. This study was conducted to assess the status of benzene exposure in different industries in Korea. W

A systematic review on natural products with antimicrobial potential against WHO's priority pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global issue, with bacteria increasingly resistant to traditional antibiotics, resulting in more treatment failures and higher mortality rates. Resistance can be defined microbiologically or clinically and arises through genetic mutations or acquired traits. In response to this growing threat, the World Health Organization (WHO) established a priority list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in 2016 to guide the research and development of new antimicrobial agents. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated AMR, underscoring the urgent n

A review of Spaulding's classification system for effective cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of reusable medical devices: Viewed through a modern-day lens that will inform and enable future sustainability.

Despite advances in medicine and innovations in many underpinning fields including disease prevention and control, the Spaulding classification system, originally proposed in 1957, remains widely used for defining the disinfection and sterilization of contaminated re-usable medical devices and surgical instruments. Screening PubMed and Scopus databases using a PRISMA guiding framework generated 272 relevant publications that were used in this review. Findings revealed that there is a need to evolve how medical devices are designed, and processed by cleaning, disinfection (and/or sterilization)

Lumbar sympathectomy techniques for critical lower limb ischaemia due to non-reconstructable peripheral arterial disease.

BACKGROUND: Critical lower limb ischaemia (CLI) is a manifestation of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) that is seen in patients with typical chronic ischaemic rest pain or patients with ischaemic skin lesions - ulcers or gangrene - for longer than 2 weeks. Critical lower limb ischaemia is the most severe form of PAD, and interventions to improve arterial perfusion become necessary. Although surgical bypass has been the gold standard for revascularisation, the extent or the site of disease may be such that the artery cannot be reconstructed or bypassed. These patients require other modalities

Interventions for actinic keratoses.

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratoses are a skin disease caused by long-term sun exposure, and their lesions have the potential to develop into squamous cell carcinoma. Treatments for actinic keratoses are sought for cosmetic reasons, for the relief of associated symptoms, or for the prevention of skin cancer development. Detectable lesions are often associated with alteration of the surrounding skin (field) where subclinical lesions might be present. The interventions available for the treatment of actinic keratoses include individual lesion-based (e.g. cryotherapy) or field-directed (e.g. topical) t

Systematic Review of Metallic, Industrial, and Pharmaceutical Emerging Contaminants in Snow and Ice: A Global Perspective from Polar and High-Mountain Regions.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) comprise diverse pollutant classes that are increasingly detected in remote environments due to their persistence and long-range transport potential. In cold regions, atmospheric cold-trapping processes favour their accumulation in high-altitude and high-latitude snow and ice, which act as sensitive archives and secondary sources of contamination. While previous studies have addressed individual environmental compartments (e.g., snowpack, glacier ice, meltwater), focusing on specific contaminant classes, a systematic review integrating the occurrence, behaviour and

Transformer-accelerated discovery of inhibitors targeting the RpsAΔ438 deletion in PZA-resistant tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is a major global public health problem caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Pyrazinamide (PZA), a key first-line drug, is activated to pyrazinoic acid, which inhibits Mycobacterium tuberculosis by targeting ribosomal protein S1 (RpsA) and blocking trans-translation. Deletion of alanine at position 438 of RpsA (RpsAΔ438) increases C-terminal flexibility, reduces drug binding, and confers PZA resistance. To identify novel inhibitors against this mutant, we developed a screening pipeline integrating Transformer-based virtual screening, molecular docking, Gaussian accelerated molecu
