Functional metabolomics of the human scalp: a metabolic niche for Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Although metabolomics data acquisition and analysis technologies have become increasingly sophisticated over the past 5-10 years, decipherin … ensive structural and functional annotation of the metabolites in the human scalp environment, thus diving one step deeper into the interpretation of "omics" data. Leveraging a collection of openly accessible software tools and integrating microbiome data as a source of functional metabolite annotations, we finally identified the specific metabolic niche …

Status of coral, giant clam and sea cucumber communities including CITES listed species on a remote Australian coral reef atoll and the potential impact of illegal fishing.

Following a recent dramatic increase in illegal fishing by Indonesian fishing vessels in Australian waters in 2022, we conducted an extensiv … ple habitat types. Survey results were consistent with the expectation that illegal fishing by free-diving occurs predominantly in shallow and intertidal habitats and that sea cucumbers in those habitats are more vulnerable to fishing than those in deep water habitats. We were unable to ascertain levels of catches from Mermaid Reef or the Rowley Shoals a …

Role of selenium toxicity and oxidative stress in aquatic birds.

Adverse effects of selenium (Se) in wild aquatic birds have been documented as a consequence of pollution of the aquatic environment by subs … eroxidase, depletion of hepatic protein bound thiols and total thiols, but a small increase in GSH. Diving ducks in the San Francisco Bay area exhibited a positive correlation between hepatic Se concentration and GSH peroxidase activity (r=0.63, P<0.05), but a negative correlation between hepatic Se and GSH concentration (r=-0.740, P<0.05). In willets (C …

[EEG changes during sedation with gamma-hydroxybutyric acid].

Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a naturally occurring transmitter in the mammalian brain, related to sleep regulation and possibly to energy balance in diving or hibernating animals. It has been used for almost 35 years as an intravenous agent for induction of anaesthesia and for long-term sedation. Its convincing pharmacological properties, without serious adverse effects on circulation or respiration, are compromised by its unpredictable duration of action. This is not a major problem with long-term sedation during ICU treatment. GHB has been used with good results for sedation of patient…

Decision regret and shared decision-making in patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is used for various medical conditions. HBOT is demanding and varies in effectiveness. This intensity combined with logistical challenges may lead to patients regretting undergoing HBOT. Therefore, shared decision-making (SDM) seems applicable when considering HBOT. The goal of this study was to assess the level of SDM as perceived by HBOT patients and relate this to post-hoc regret about choosing HBOT. METHODS: Patients referred for ≥ 10 sessions HBOT, were recruited for this prospective cohort study. Participants completed the SDM-Q-9 and SDM-K

Measuring whole-body inert gas uptake and washout during submersion.

An error was identified in Figure 3 of the published article. The images in the figure were incorrectly placed, resulting in the same image being shown for each part of the figure. The online version of the article has been corrected, and the corrected figure will also be included in the version deposited in PubMed Central. However, three versions of the article had already been distributed before the error was identified and cannot be corrected retrospectively. The error is limited to Figure 3 and does not affect the text, data, results or conclusions of the article. The journal apologises fo

Effect of normobaric and hyperbaric hyperoxia treatment on symptoms and cognitive capacities in Long COVID patients: a randomised placebo-controlled, prospective, double-blind trial.

INTRODUCTION: Long COVID syndrome is a major health issue. Multiple treatments have been proposed but efficacy is inadequately investigated. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been promoted based on a small number of publications. As there is potential for a placebo effect and the financial cost of HBOT is high, we sought to investigate the effects of HBOT in Long COVID in a randomised trial. METHODS: We randomised 101 patients into four treatment groups, receiving 10 sessions of oxygen 'treatment' inside a pressure chamber, according to one of four modalities: A - 100% oxygen at 253 kPa (2

Comparison of three infusion pumps as an option for intensive care treatments in monoplace hyperbaric chambers.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is used in critical care for managing certain severe conditions. However, the reliability of infusion pumps under hyperbaric conditions remains a critical concern. This study evaluated the performance of three infusion pump models - the Mindray BeneFusion VP5, Baxter Flo-Gard 6201, and Braun Infusomat Space - under hyperbaric conditions. METHODS: Infusion pumps were modified to deliver flow into an environment pressurised up to 284 kPa. Accuracy of flow delivered into a pressurised monoplace chamber were tested across a range of infusion rates (1

Evaluation of bacterial survival on inert surfaces in a hyperbaric environment.

INTRODUCTION: Surface cleaning and hand hygiene within hyperbaric chambers are challenging because of the risk of fire with currently used products containing alcohol or glycerine. This study aimed to investigate if hyperbaric conditions could have inhibitory effects on bacteria present on inert materials. METHODS: We deposited Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) on inert materials in an experimental chamber (Comex1200Alu) and compressed the chamber environment with air (253 kPa, 95 minutes) (referred to as indoor). The control was contaminated materials placed ou

The process, logistics and governance behind a high-stakes novel intervention: the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the hyperbaric chamber.

INTRODUCTION: A multi-trauma patient receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) developed severe disseminated vaso-invasive fungal disease. In the absence of any remaining treatment escalation options, hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) was considered as a last effort at gaining disease control. Previously, the use of modern ECMO devices had not been validated for hyperbaric use at our centre or, to the best of our knowledge, at any other centre around the world. We had, however, identified a potentially hyperbaric compatible ECMO device and had commenced a validation process. The ai

Functional outcome and quality of life after iatrogenic cerebral air embolism treated with hyperbaric oxygen: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Iatrogenic cerebral air embolism (CAE) is an uncommon, potentially fatal condition characterised by accidental introduction of air into the circulation during invasive procedures. Prompt recognition and treatment with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are required. Data on long-term functional outcome and specifically quality of life (QoL) in patients experiencing CAE are limited. METHODS: This prospective, single-centre, observational cohort study examined patients with iatrogenic CAE who were treated with HBOT. Patient characteristics, clinical severity scores and treatment det

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment of neonates: a case series.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) administers oxygen under high pressure, mainly for decompression illness, carbon monoxide intoxication, wound healing, infections, and acute peripheral arterial ischaemia. There has been limited use in newborn infants. This case series aims to highlight the potential role of HBOT in management of rare and challenging conditions encountered in the neonatal period. Although HBOT is widely available, its application in newborns remains limited and not well established. We present three neonatal cases: acute peripheral ischaemia; vascular compromise due to thrombos

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment and pulmonary air-containing lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary barotrauma is a rare but serious complication of hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Pulmonary air-containing lesions may predispose pulmonary barotrauma by causing air trapping during changes in environmental pressure. This study aimed to investigate whether pulmonary air-containing lesions cause pulmonary barotrauma during hyperbaric oxygen treatment. METHODS: This study retrospectively analysed data from individuals who presented to the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Clinic at Gülhane Training and Research Hospital, Health Sciences University, between 2017 and 2022. Healing fragile bones: a case report on hyperbaric oxygen therapy in pycnodysostosis.

Pycnodysostosis is a rare lysosomal storage disorder characterised by short stature, craniofacial dysmorphisms, dental anomalies, and increased bone fragility due to osteoclast dysfunction caused by cathepsin K gene mutations. This case report describes a 43-year-old female pycnodysostosis patient with recurrent subtrochanteric fractures and delayed bone healing following multiple surgical interventions, including femoral osteotomy and bone grafting. Despite these efforts, bony union was not achieved. The patient underwent 39 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), administered at 243.2

The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on lesion size in early-stage femoral head avascular necrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral head avascular necrosis (AVN) is a common orthopaedic condition that occurs when intraosseous microcirculation is compromised. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) increases tissue oxygen concentration, reduces oedema, stimulates angiogenesis, lowers intraosseous pressure, and enhances microcirculation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of HBOT in early femoral head AVN based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. METHODS: A total of 37 hips from 25 patients with Ficat Stage 1-2 femoral head AVN, followed between 2018 and 2021 and receiving HBOT
