Using logic programming for modeling the one-carbon metabolism network to study the impact of folate deficiency on methylation processes.

Dynamical modeling is an accurate tool for describing the dynamic regulation of one-carbon metabolism (1CM) with emphasis on the alteration of DNA methylation and/or dUMP methylation into dTMP. Using logic programming we present a comprehensive and adaptative mathematical model to study the impact of folate deficiency, including folate transport and enzymes activities. 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (5mTHF) uptake and DNA and dUMP methylation were studied by simulating nutritional 5mTHF deficiency and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene defects. Both conditions had distinct effects on 1

Prematurity and maternal folate deficiency: anemia during pregnancy study group results in Valencia, Venezuela.

The purpose of this study was to determine the association and its magnitude between prematurity and folate deficiency in women in their third trimester of pregnancy, and at labor. An incident case-control study was conducted using 2 controls per case. Data was obtained in a tertiary hospital in Valencia, Venezuela. A total of 543 women who delivered between May and December 1996 entered into the study. Women having a preterm delivery (< 37 weeks of gestation at delivery) were defined as cases (n = 181). Anemia was defined according to WHO as Hb less than 11 g/dL, when a pregnant woman had a f

Hematologic complications of chronic renal failure.

Uremia interferes with erythropoiesis, granulocyte, platelet, and immune functions. As a result, uremic patients are almost invariably anemic, and have a high incidence of infections and hemorrhagic complications. The anemia of renal failure, which is caused primarily by damage to the site of erythropoietin production is often complex, and complicated by hemolysis from a variety of mechanisms, iron deficiency, and so forth. Although hemodialysis ameliorates some of the hematologic complications to a variable degree, they remain a serious hinderance to the well being of this group of patients.

The Role of Vitamins in Sepsis: A Narrative Review.

Sepsis remains one of the major challenges in modern intensive care, characterized by high mortality and complex metabolic and immunological disturbances. Given the limited effectiveness of current therapeutic strategies, increasing attention has been directed toward supportive interventions aimed at restoring metabolic homeostasis. Particular interest has been focused on selected vitamins that exhibit pleiotropic biological effects. Thus, we summarized the current evidence on the role of selected vitamins (C, D, B1, B9, B12) in the treatment and supportive management of sepsis, highlighting t

Haemoglobin and Hematinic Status Before and After Bariatric Surgery over 4 years of Follow-Up.

PURPOSE: Bariatric surgery is associated with deficiencies of vitamins and minerals, and patients are routinely advised supplements postoperatively. We studied prevalence of vitamin B12, folate and iron deficiencies and anaemia before and after bariatric surgery over 4 years of follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of 353 people with obesity, including 257 (72.8%) women, who underwent gastric bypass (252, 71.4%) or sleeve gastrectomy (101, 28.6%) at our National Health Service bariatric centre in Northwest England. RESULTS: At baseline, mean (standard

[Oral feeding and nutritional improvement in hospitals and residential care homes. Industry innovations].

OBJECTIVES: Inpatient and institutionalized elderly patients are population groups vulnerable from the nutritional point of view because oftheir greater risk of deficiencies and because in them the effects of imbalances are more serious than in other groups. Analyzing the possible usefulness of industry innovations offering solutions in the oral feeding of these population groups constitutes the objective of the present work. METHODS: Bibliographic search related to the topic. RESULTS: Patients with nutritional problems, prior to hospitalization, are at increased risk of complications, highe

Community-level micronutrient fortification of school lunch meals improved vitamin A, folate, and iron status of schoolchildren in Himalayan villages of India.

Anemia and micronutrient deficiencies are common among Indian schoolchildren. We assessed the effectiveness of micronutrient fortification of meals cooked and fortified at school on anemia and micronutrient status of schoolchildren in Himalayan villages of India. In this placebo-controlled, cluster-randomized study, 499 schoolchildren (6-10 y) received either multiple micronutrients (treatment group) or placebo (control group) as part of school meals (6 d/wk) for 8 mo. Both groups were dewormed at the beginning of the study. The micronutrient premix provided 10 mg iron, 375 microg vitamin A, 4

Vitamin B status and cognitive performance in preclinical and clinical Alzheimer's disease: data from the Kungsholmen Project.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The impact of vitamin B status on cognitive functioning in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is disputed. Using a population-based sample, we examined the associations of vitamin B(12) and folate with cognitive functioning in clinical (n = 44) and preclinical (n = 39) AD. METHODS: The groups were subdivided in terms of low (<200 pmol/l) versus normal levels of B(12) and low (<13 nmol/l) versus normal folate levels. Participants were administered tests of verbal and nonverbal episodic memory, visuospatial abilities and verbal fluency. RESULTS: As expected, the preclinical AD group per

Anaemic crisis in sickle cell disease.

Sixteen episodes of acute anaemia necessitating urgent blood transfusion have been investigated in 13 children with sickle cell anaemia. In five out of seven episodes there was evidence of increased haemolysis while in 10 out of 16 episodes a profound fall in reticulocyte count indicated marrow erythroid cell failure. Cold agglutinins active at room temperature were detected in 13 episodes, and anti-I specificity was demonstrated in 11. Warmed blood of homologous ABO and Rhesus groups was administered without complication despite difficulty with cross-matching. The exacerbation of anaemia was

Facilitators and barriers to the implementation of the Girls' Iron Folate Tablet Supplementation program among adolescent girls in the Bono Region: a cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: iron supplementation is one of the primary cornerstone treatments for reducing anaemia in pregnant women, and its adoption is important for reducing anaemia to tolerable levels. About 33% of women of reproductive age worldwide are anaemic. As a result, women are more likely to enter pregnancy with less-than-optimal iron stores, which may have negative consequences for them and their offspring, including an increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, prematurity, and low birth weight, as well as impaired physical and neurological development. This study aims to determine the challe

Correlates of Iron, Cobalamin, Folate, and Vitamin A Status among Stunted Children: A Cross-Sectional Study in Uganda.

Micronutrient deficiencies and stunting are prevalent. We assessed correlates of iron, cobalamin, folate, and vitamin A biomarkers in a cross-sectional study of stunted children aged 12-59 months in eastern Uganda. The biomarkers measured were serum ferritin (S-FE), soluble transferrin receptor (S-TfR), retinol binding protein (S-RBP), plasma cobalamin (P-Cob), methylmalonic acid (P-MMA), and folate (P-Fol). Using linear regression, we assessed socio-demography, stunting severity, malaria rapid test, and inflammation as correlates of micronutrient biomarkers. Of the 750 children, the mean (SD)
