BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Globally, the management of infections has been complicated greatly by the rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens, particularly Escherichia coli (E. coli). This bacterium is commonly found in a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including livestock, which can serve as important sources of specific pathogenic or multidrug-resistant strains. Cross-contamination can occur from farm to food, posing public health concerns.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined the antibiotic resistance and virulence gene profiles of E. coli isolated from farm

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health challenge, driven by the persistence and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). These resistance determinants can accumulate and spread across diverse environmental compartments, including wastewater, hospital effluents, agricultural systems, and landfills, facilitating their dissemination through mechanisms such as horizontal gene transfer. Bacteriophages have emerged as promising tools for the targeted control of antibiotic-resistant bacterial populations, as their lytic activity ca

Colistin resistance represents a mounting global health concern, particularly alarming in the face of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) bacterial infections. As a polymyxin-class antibiotic, colistin has long served as a critical last-line defence against severe Gram-negative infections caused by pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. However, its increasing and, at times, indiscriminate use has driven the emergence of resistant strains, thereby compromising its clinical utility.Mechanistically, colistin resist

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that often causes nosocomial infections resistant to treatment. Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are increasing, as are rates of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and possible extensively drug-resistant (XDR) infections. Our objective was to characterize the molecular epidemiology and AMR mechanisms of this pathogen. We sequenced the whole genome for each of 176 P. aeruginosa isolates collected in the Philippines in 2013-2014; derived the multilocus sequence type (MLST), presence of AMR determinants and relatedness between isolates; and determ

The present study investigated the genomic constitution and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of 238 Campylobacter from pigs and wild boars in Italy between 2012 and 2019. Campylobacter strains were genotyped using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and whole genome MLST (wgMLST), screened for antimicrobial resistance genes, and tested for phenotypic susceptibility to six different antibiotics. C. coli was detected in 98.31% and 91.66% of pigs and wild boars, while C. jejuni was isolated in the remaining cases. MLST assigned 73 STs and 13 STs in pigs and wild boars, respectively, including 44 nove

The global dissemination of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) has been largely attributed to a few high-risk sequence types (STs) (ST258, ST11, ST512) associated with human disease. ST101 is an emerging clone that has been identified in different parts of the world with the potential to become a global, persistent public health threat. Recent research suggests the ST101 lineage is associated with an 11% increase in mortality rate in comparison to non-ST101 infections. In this study, we generated a high-quality, near-finished genome assembly of a multidrug-resi

The genes for acetylcholinesterase (ACHE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BCHE) are located within regions subject to non-random chromosomal abnormalities in the myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Acetylcholinesterase is mapped to 7q22, within the critical deleted region presumed to contain a myeloid specific tumour suppressor gene. Butyrylcholinesterase is mapped to 3q26: abnormalities at this region are associated with sub-types of MDS and AML with thrombocytopenia, or with increased platelet counts. Both ACHE and BCHE have been implicated as playing a role in mega

BACKGROUND: Lineage distribution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) isolates is strongly associated with geographically distinct human populations, and its transmission can be further impacted by the bacterial genome. However, the epidemic success of Mtb isolates at an individual level was unknown in eastern China. Knowledge regarding the emergence and transmission of Mtb isolates as well as relevant factors may offer a new solution to curb the spread of the disease. Thus, this study aims to reveal the evolution and epidemic success of Mtb isolates in eastern China.
RESULTS: Of initial 1040

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is one of the leading causes of salmonellosis in Australia. In this study, a total of 568 S. Enteritidis isolates from two Australian states across two consecutive years were analyzed and compared to international strains, using the S. Enteritidis multilevel genome typing (MGT) database, which contained 40,390 publicly available genomes from 99 countries. The Australian S. Enteritidis isolates were divided into three phylogenetic clades (A, B, and C). Clades A and C represented 16.4% and 3.5% of the total isolates, respectively, and were of local origin.

Understanding the fitness costs associated with plasmid carriage is a key to better understanding the mechanisms of plasmid maintenance in bacteria. In the current work, we performed multiple serial passages (63 days, 627.8 generations) to identify the compensatory mechanisms that Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium ATCC 14028 utilized to maintain the multidrug-resistant (MDR) IncHI2 plasmid pJXP9 in the presence and absence of antibiotic selection. The plasmid pJXP9 was maintained for hundreds of generations even without drug exposure. Endpoint evolved (the endpoint of evolution) S. Typhi

PURPOSE: Typhoid is a significant global health challenge due to its high pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance. Salmonella typhi (S.typhi) can switch its lifestyles between biofilm and planktonic phase which allows it to evade host defenses and develop resistance to antibiotics. Salmonella sp. harbors multiple genes encoding efflux-pumps systems whose up-regulation contributes to multi-drug resistance (MDR) and extensive drug-resistance (XDR). To overcome the battle against resistant S. typhi strains, novel non-antibiotics inhibitors are required for inhibitory application. This study as

The multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotype of Pseudomonas aeruginosa poses a significant clinical challenge and frequently causes severe and potentially lethal infections. The activity of efflux proteins, which are membrane transporters that use the electrochemical gradient across the bacterial membrane to extrude antimicrobials and reduce their intracellular concentrations, is a significant factor in this resistance. One of the most well-known mechanisms of multidrug resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the Resistance-Nodulation-Division (RND) efflux pump system. MexB, the inner membrane tran
