Spatial distribution of entomopathogenic nematodes and their relationship with soil chemical attributes in tropical agroecosystems.

The distribution of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in agricultural soils is influenced by complex interactions between edaphic factors and crop management practices, yet these relationships remain poorly understood under tropical conditions. This study evaluated the spatial distribution of EPNs and their association with soil chemical attributes in five crop systems in southeastern Brazil. A total of 82 soil samples were collected and analyzed using insect-baiting techniques and geospatial tools, including kernel density and interpolation methods. EPN occurrence varied across crops and was

Targeting Iron Homeostasis Curtails Mosquito Fertility and Plasmodium Transmission Potential.

Iron metabolism is essential for both mosquito reproductive fitness and Plasmodium development within the mosquito, yet this axis has remained insufficiently explored as a potential target for malaria control. Ferritin, the major iron-storage protein and a central regulator of iron homeostasis, has not been biochemically or functionally characterized in any hematophagous insect to date. Our computational and phylogenetic analyses reveal that mosquito ferritin represents a unique case, exhibiting a chimeric architecture that combines conserved iron-binding motifs with distinctive heme-coordinat

[Imported Infectious Diseases of the Nervous System].

Although sanitary conditions in Japan are generally favorable, pathogens may be introduced by patients who acquire the infections overseas. Dengue fever has a high global incidence, with nearly 200 cases occurring annually in Japan. Most of these infections are acquired in Southeast Asia. As dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes, preventive measures against insect bites are important. The incidence of Japanese encephalitis has markedly decreased in Japan owing to widespread vaccination. This disease is mosquito-borne, and only approximately 1% of infected individuals develop symptoms. Howe

Nutritional and Functional Enhancement of Chinese Steamed Bread Through Incorporation of Acheta domesticus and Antheraea pernyi Pupae Powders.

The study intended to assess the impacts of partially replacing wheat flour with Acheta domesticus powder (AD) and Antheraea pernyi pupae powder (AP) at 5%, 10%, and 15% levels on the proximate composition, color properties, texture profile, antioxidant capacity, starch digestibility, and flavor characteristics of Chinese steamed bread (CSB). The addition of AP and AD notably increased the levels of protein, fat, and ash and also led to an elevated chewiness and hardness. Most importantly, compared to the control, AP- and AD-fortified CSB exhibited a significantly low estimated glycemic index

Dengue: epidemiology, diagnosis methods, treatment options, and prevention strategies.

Dengue is an arboviral disease caused by dengue virus, which is mostly found in tropical regions, and the number of human cases has increased dramatically since 2000, with 5.2 million cases reported in 2019, according to WHO reports, 70% of which were in Southeast Asia, the Western Pacific, and Asia. Dengue infection can result in a wide range of clinical manifestations, ranging from fever to severe dengue shock syndrome, which can be fatal, particularly in those with secondary dengue. This review of the aetiology of dengue fever examines the complex interactions between the virus and the immu

Negevirus Piura Suppresses Zika Virus Replication in Mosquito Cells.

We investigated the interaction between the insect-specific virus, Piura virus (PIUV), and the arbovirus Zika virus (ZIKV) in Aedes albopictus cells. We performed coinfection experiments in C6/36 cells. Piura virus (Cor 33 strain, Colombia) and ZIKV (PRVABC58 strain, Puerto Rico) were co-inoculated into C6/36 cells using two multiplicity of infection (MOI) combinations: 0.1 for both viruses and 1.0 for ZIKV, 0.1 for PIUV. Wells were infected in triplicate with either PIUV and ZIKV coinfection, ZIKV-only, or PIUV-only. Mock infected cells served as control wells. The cell suspension was collect

Isolation and identification of microbiota of Culex quinquefasciatus for their application as paratransgenic tools in vector control.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although the study on the bacteria residing in the mid-gut, salivary gland, and reproductive organs of insect vectors have drawn appeal to the host-pathogen interactions, we know comparatively less about microbiota that naturally exist in different mosquito organs within Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the current investigation, PCR assay by using 16S rRNA gene amplification and DNA sequencing, in addition to the traditional culture-based approach utilized for the detection of cultivable bacterial assemblages in mid-gut and reproductive tracts of Culex quinquefascia

A 90-day feeding study of genetically modified maize LP007-1 in wistar han RCC rats.

LP007-1 is a variety of insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant maize containing the modified cry1Ab, cry2Ab, vip3Aa and cp4-epsps genes. The food safety assessment of the maize LP007-1 was conducted in Wistar Han RCC rats by a 90-days feeding study. Maize grains from both LP007-1 or its corresponding non-genetically modified control maize AX808 were incorporated into rodent diets at 25% and 50% concentrations by mass and administered to rats (n = 10/sex/group) for 90 days. A commercialized rodent diet was fed to an additional group as the basal-diet group. The diets of all groups were nutritio

Metabolic Resistance in Abamectin-Resistant Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean from Northern China.

Abamectin, produced by the soil-dwelling actinomycete Streptomyces avermitilis, belongs to the macrocyclic lactones class of pesticides, has nematocidal, acaricidal, and insecticidal activity, and is highly effective when used against targeted species. Bemisia tabaci, the tobacco whitefly, is a highly destructive insect to agricultural production worldwide, and various insecticide-resistant strains have been identified in China. Here, we monitored levels of resistance to abamectin in twelve field-collected B. tabaci populations from northern China, and confirmed that, compared with the lab ref

Characterisation of thymol effects on RDL receptors from the bee parasite Varroa destructor.

A major contributor to bee colony decline is infestation with its most devastating pest, the mite Varroa destructor. To control these mites, thymol is often used, although how it achieves this is not understood. One well-documented action of thymol is to modulate GABA-activated ion channels, which includes insect RDL receptors, a known insecticidal target. Here we have cloned two Varroa RDL subunits, one of which is similar to the canonical RDL subunit, while the other has some differences in M4, and, to a lesser extent, M2 and its binding site loops. Expression of this unusual RDL receptor in

Swarming Behavior in Anopheles gambiae (sensu lato): Current Knowledge and Future Outlook.

Effective management of insect disease vectors requires a detailed understanding of their ecology and behavior. In Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) (Diptera: Culicidae) mating occurs during swarming, but knowledge of their mating behavior under natural conditions is limited. Mosquitoes mate in flight over specific landmarks, known as swarm markers, at particular locations. Swarms consist of males; the females usually approach the swarm and depart following copulation. The number of mating pairs per swarm is closely associated with swarm size. The shape and height of swarm markers vary and m

Insect Gut Bacteria Promoting the Growth of Tomato Plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

We investigated gut bacteria from three insect species for the presence of plant growth properties (PGP). Out of 146 bacterial strains obtained from 20 adult specimens of Scolytidae sp., 50 specimens of Oulema melanopus, and 150 specimens of Diabrotica virgifera, we selected 11 strains displaying the following: PGP, phosphate solubility, production of cellulase, siderophore, lipase, protease, and hydrogen cyanide. The strains were tested for growth promotion ability on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) plants. Each strain was tested individually, and all strains were tested together as a bacter

Arbovirus detection in synanthropic mosquitoes from the Brazilian Amazon and in mosquito saliva using Flinders Technology Associates cards.

Although arbovirus transmission and identifying target vectors may provide a baseline for planning disease control strategies, there are many gaps in knowledge regarding these mosquitoes and viral species in urban, rural, or sylvatic habitats in the Brazilian Amazon. Our goal was to screen for dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses in synanthropic mosquitoes and with Flinders Technology Associates (FTA) cards using insect saliva. Mosquitoes were caught using ovitraps and aspirators in the city of Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. Honey-baited FTA cards were placed in mosquito cages for 15 days; wh

Intrinsic Activity of IGRs Against Larval Cat Fleas.

Insect growth regulators (IGRs) such as lufenuron, methoprene, and pyriproxyfen have been important tools in the integrated pest management of cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), for the past two decades. Other IGRs have been registered for the control of termite, dipteran, and lepidopterous pests including chlorfluazuron, cyromazine, dicyclanil, and precocene I, but have been not tested against C. felis. The intrinsic activity of IGRs was determined by exposing larvae to treated larval rearing media. The LC50s of chlorfluazuron, cyromazine, dicyclanil, lufenuron, and precocene I agains

That Which Bends Up: A Case Report and Literature Review of Chikungunya Virus.

We present a case of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in a 39-year-old female who developed an acute febrile illness marked by polyarthralgia and rash after returning from Saint Lucia. This epidemic-prone pathogen is increasingly likely to be encountered by primary care and hospital physicians in the coming months. The virus was first locally transmitted in the Caribbean in December 2013 and has since spread to 44 countries and 47 US states, affecting a suspected 1.2 million people. A mosquito-borne virus, CHIKV causes a severe and symmetric polyarthralgia that can relapse for months to years, creati

Fitness cost and realized heritability of resistance to spinosad in Chrysoperla carnea (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae).

The common green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea is a key biological control agent employed in integrated pest management (IPM) programs for managing various insect pests. Spinosad is used for the management of pests in ornamental plants, fruit trees, vegetable and field crops all over the world, including Pakistan. A field-collected population of C. carnea was selected with spinosad and fitness costs and realized heritability were investigated. After selection for five generations, C. carnea developed 12.65- and 73.37-fold resistance to spinosad compared to the field and UNSEL populations. The re

Enforcement of reproductive synchrony via policing in a clonal ant.

In insect societies, worker policing controls genetic conflicts between individuals and increases colony efficiency. However, disentangling relatedness from colony-level effects is usually impossible. We studied policing in the parthenogenetic ant Cerapachys biroi, where genetic conflicts are absent due to clonality and reproduction is synchronized through stereotyped colony cycles. We show that larval cues regulate the cycles by suppressing ovarian activity and that individuals that fail to respond to these cues are policed and executed by their nestmates. These individuals are genetically id

Development of neuraminidase subtype-specific reference antisera by recombinant protein expressed in baculovirus.

Outbreaks of avian influenza A virus infection, particularly the H5N1 strains that have affected birds and some humans for the past 15 years, have highlighted the need for increased surveillance and disease control. Such measures require diagnostic tests to detect and characterize the different subtypes of influenza virus. In the current study, a simple method for producing reference avian influenza virus antisera to be used in diagnostic tests was developed. Antisera of nine avian influenza A virus neuraminidases (NA) used for NA subtyping were produced using a recombinant baculovirus. The re
