Forty-two cases of tumors of the skin and of the soft tissues immediately beneath the skin, presumably induced by ionizing radiotherapy, are reported: 35 were carcinomas, 2 angiosarcomas, 2 leiomyosarcomas of the dermis and 3 fibrosarcomas. In 31 of the 35 cases of carcinomas, multiple neoplastic foci were found in the skin area exposed to the ionizing radiation. We report an unusual case of renal angiomyolipoma occurring in 68-year-old man. The tumor lacked well-developed vascular and adipose components and was composed almost exclusively of smooth muscle cells. Numerous skenoid-like periodic acid-Schiff-positive globules were interspersed between the tumor cells; the lesion therefore closely resembled a low-grade stromal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. 270 digestive carcinoid tumors have been diagnosed at the Pathology Institute of Lausanne between 1971 and 1990; of these 21 were associated with other, synchronous, tumors: 7 of the carcinoids were from the appendix (33%), 8 from the small bowel (38%), 4 were from the colorectum (25%), one from the duodenum (4.5%) and finally one from the stomach (4.5%).
