We report on a 30-year old patient suffering from acute abdomen. X-ray examinations (abdomen photograph, passage of contrast medium) showed an obstructive ileus of the small bowel. Exploratory laparatomy revealed an obstruction of the small bowel by means of masses of lymphatic nodes as part of a mesenteric lymphadenopathy. The functional impairment caused by lymphatic filariasis was assessed through qualitative and quantitative methods in rural areas of Tamil Nadu, South India. A new case of lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis developed in the course of a persistent generalized lymphadenopathy syndrome is reported. The causes of early deaths (12 weeks from diagnosis) were analyzed in 41 patients, i.e. 29% of total acute leukemia material, hospitalized 1976-1981. The most common cause of death was infection, mainly pneumonia and septicaemia, infection and haemorrhagic diathesis or haemorrhagic diathesis alone. In 3 patients suddenly dead, large brain infiltrations were found. Analysis of prognostic factors revealed significantly higher leukocyte count and significantly lower platelet count in the peripheral blood than in the control group of acute myeloid leukemia patients.

BCG administration is known to be a safe procedure. However of late, with increased immunization activities, a few complications following BCG administration have been noted and reported. 36 cases of BCG complications observed over a 4-year period were analyzed by age and sex distribution and by severity of lesion. The most common forms of lesions seen were localized subcutaneous abscesses and regional lymphoadenitis. More serious forms of complications such as mediastinal involvement, BCG lung infiltration and BCG papillitis occurred less frequently.
