Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography, Wide-Field Photography, and Fundus Autofluorescence Correlation of Posterior Ophthalmomyiasis Interna.

Posterior ophthalmomyiasis interna is a rare, potentially devastating infestation of the posterior segment by fly larvae. The authors report the first demonstration of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) (Spectralis; Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany), wide-field angiography (Optos, Dunfermline, Scotland) and photography, and fundus autofluorescence with temporal progression during a period of 6 months. A 12-year-old white female presented with acute, painless vision loss with hand motions visual acuity. No larva was visible, so she was treated with oral ivermectin.…

Necrotising fasciitis of the cervicofacial region: a bizarre presentation.

The following paper presents the case of a middle-aged woman, who presented with a necrotising soft tissue infection of the cervicofacial region with maggots in situ. She was managed with aggressive surgical debridement, but eventually succumbed to the disease because of erosion of the great vessels of the neck by the maggots. The purpose of this case report is to emphasise the severity of this disease and also to present an unusual case, which had a fatal outcome.

Efficacy of injectable and pour-on microdose ivermectin in the treatment of goat warble fly infestation by Przhevalskiana silenus (Diptera, Oestridae).

The prophylactic efficacy of microdoses of injectable and pour-on ivermectin formulations against larval stages of Przhevalskiana silenus was assessed in naturally infected goats in the region of Calabria (southern Italy).Sixty-eight goats from two goat farms were divided into five groups: one group remained untreated, while the other four groups were treated with microdoses of ivermectin (5 and 10 microg/kg injectable formulation and 10 and 20 microg/kg pour-on formulation). The microdoses of ivermectin were fully effective in the treatment of goat warble fly infestation (GWFI) as no larvae e

The intrinsic peritrophic matrix protein peritrophin-95 from larvae of Lucilia cuprina is synthesised in the cardia and regurgitated or excreted as a highly immunogenic protein.

The intrinsic peritrophic matrix glycoprotein, peritrophin-95, from the midgut of larvae of Lucilia cuprina can only be solubilized from the matrix using strong denaturants. This suggests that the protein has a structural role in the matrix. Consistent with this is the finding that immuno-gold and immuno-fluorescence localizations of the protein showed a uniform distribution within the peritrophic matrix. RT-PCR demonstrated that expression of peritrophin-95 mRNA was restricted to the larval cardia, a small organ located in the anterior midgut from which the type 2 peritrophic matrix originate

Dermatologic manifestations of parasitic diseases.

The skin being exposed to the environment is commonly the portal of entry for parasites. Infections with parasites characteristically produce cutaneous lesions as well as systemic disease in humans. In the past, parasitic diseases were limited to their endemic areas. With the relative ease of worldwide travel, however, they are appearing with increasing frequency in the United States and other developed countries. This article describes the characteristic cutaneous findings of parasitic diseases that physicians in the United States may encounter in their medical practice.

Phthiriasis palpebrarum, thelaziasis, and ophthalmomyiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Parasitic infections of the eye are a major cause of ocular-surface diseases globally. While most infections are treatable, parasites can cause varying levels of damage mostly due to late diagnosis or misdiagnosis as a result of doctors' unfamiliarity with their characteristics of latency and crypsis, as well as lack of awareness by the patients. CASE REPORTS: In this study, we present three cases of phthiriasis palpebrarum, thelaziasis, and ophthalmomyiasis, respectively. Two of the cases were treated at the clinic and did not recur. One patient refused treatment and was lost t…

Oviposition site selection by Gasterophilus pecorum (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) in its habitat in Kalamaili Nature Reserve, Xinjiang, China.

Oviposition site selection is an important aspect of the behavioural ecology of insects. A comparison of the habitats used by a species enhances our understanding of their adaptation to altered environments. We collected data on the oviposition behaviours of Gasterophilus pecorum (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) in its habitat in Kalamaili Nature Reserve (KNR), Xinjiang, China between March and October 2014. We found 91 quadrats were used by G. pecorum for oviposition. Examining 13 ecological factors using the t-test, chi-square test, and principal component analysis showed that G. pecorum's oviposi

Long-term epidemiology, effect on body condition and interspecific interactions of concomitant infection by nasopharyngeal bot fly larvae (Cephenemyia auribarbis and Pharyngomyia picta, Oestridae) in a population of Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus).

We studied the pattern of infection and the inter-annual variation and individual factors affecting the infection of 2 species of nasopharyngeal bot flies, Cephenemyia auribarbis and Pharyngomyia picta (Diptera: Oestridae), in a population of Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) from south central Spain (10 annual periods between 1990 and 2003). Mean prevalence+/-S.E.95%CI of infection was 35.19+/-4.24% (n=486). The frequency distribution of the parasites was markedly aggregated (K: 0.213, mean abundance+/-S.D.: 5.49+/-12.12). Parasite load of Oestridae peaked at calf and subadult age

Epidemiology of Oestrus ovis infection of sheep in Argentina's Western Pampas.

Seasonal population trends and effects of Oestrus ovis in naturally infected sheep were studied over 13 months, in the Western of the Pampeana region. At weaning, 140 growing lambs were randomly allocated to two groups: UG, untreated group and TG treated every 4 weeks with closantel (10 mg/kg). Successive Oestrus free tracer lambs (TL) by previous treatment (n = 65) were slaughtered after 20-30 exposition days for larval counts. Likewise, other group PL of 117 permanent untreated lambs was slaughtered from four to 17 months of age. Weighing and assessment of health signs of UG and TG and blood

Andean Plants Essential Oils: A Scented Alternative to Synthetic Insecticides for the Control of Blowflies.

Blowflies are vectors of microorganisms and human pathogens, and their maggots cause myiasis in vertebrates and infest and spoil meat and fish products. Essential oils (EOs) from spices were proven to be a safer and more sustainable alternative to synthetic insecticides for the control of blowflies and are suitable for protecting food from such pests. However, some EOs are not acceptable for environmental or topical applications due to their strong, unpleasant odour. In this study, we measured the acute toxicity and the repellence of two EOs extracted from the Andean plants Aloysia citrodora P…

Experimental concurrent infection of Afar breed goats with Oestrus ovis (L1) and Haemonchus contortus (L3): interaction between parasite populations, changes in parasitological and basic haematological parameters.

The study was conducted to examine the occurrence and interaction between Oestrus ovis and Haemonchus contortus in experimentally infected Ethiopian Afar breed of goats. Twenty goats were divided into four groups (O, OH, H, and C) of five animals each. Each animal of groups O and OH received weekly infections for 5 weeks with 66 first instar larvae (L1) of O. ovis. Then animals of groups OH and H were infected with a single dose of 5000 third stage larvae (L3) of H. contortus. Goats of group C were kept free of any infection as non-infected control. Faecal egg count (FEC), blood cell count, to

Complement, coagulation and NET pathway activation underlies early host response to blowfly (Lucilia cuprina) infestation.

BACKGROUND: Blowfly strike (myiasis), caused mainly by Lucilia spp., poses a serious animal welfare concern and results in substantial economic losses to the global sheep industry. However, the early molecular and proteomic responses of sheep skin to larval infestation are not well characterised. METHODS: The early proteomic response in sheep skin following infestation by blowfly Lucilia cuprina larvae was assessed in 14 Merino ewes, 7 from a group selected for breech strike resistance and 7 from a non-selected group. Control sites were also established using mock dental plugs without blowfly…

Global epidemiology of Cephalopina titillator infestation in camels: a systematic review and meta-analysis (1980-2025).

BACKGROUND: Cephalopina titillator (C. titillator) is the causative agent of camel nasopharyngeal myiasis and is widespread in camel-rearing regions worldwide, causing impaired health, reduced productivity, and economic losses. However, despite the veterinary importance of C. titillator, global epidemiological evidence remains limited and fragmented, and no comprehensive synthesis of prevalence data across camel-rearing regions has previously been conducted. The objective of this review was to estimate the global pooled prevalence of C. titillator infestation in camels. In addition, subgroup a…
