BACKGROUND: Cisatracurium, one of the ten isomers in atracurium, is a nondepolarizing muscle relaxant with an intermediate duration of action. It is more potent and less likely to release histamine than atracurium. As one of the isomers composing atracurium, it presumably undergoes Hofmann elimination. This study was conducted to describe the pharmacokinetics of cisatracurium and its metabolites and to determine the dose proportionality of cisatracurium after administration of 2 or 4 times the ED(95).

Efficacies of two methods of nondrug analgesia: acupuncture (1000 cases) and antipain transcutaneous electroneurostimulation (91 cases), as well as of narcotic analgesics omnopon and promedol (229 cases) were compared in the immediate and early postoperative period. Platelet MAO activity was measured in 75 hospitalized depressed patients and in 31 healthy subjects. Plasmas post dexamethasone cortisol levels were examined in 73 patients. Results indicate that higher platelet MAO activity does not occur in all, but only in male major depressed patients. A simple technique of wound perfusion with bupivacaine (Marcain) which provides sustained postoperative analgesia is described. No complications nor side effects related to toxicity, hypersensitivity, infection, or impaired wound healing were encountered. Memory tests were administered to 30 patients taking methadone hydrochloride and 31 taking levomethadyl acetate (levo-alpha-acetylmethadol, LAAM) both prior to treatment and after one and three months of continuous treatment. Ninety-seven young non-psychotic men with intravenous opiate abuse, who had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital, were seen at follow-up 3 years after admission. All were traced. At follow-up, 19% were abstinent, 9% had died, whereas the remainder were still addicted. Those who had become abstinent had done so around the age of 20 and/or before they had been addicted to opiate for 3-4 years, almost regardless of the time at which their total drug abuse had started.

A combination of midazolam and droperidol given intramuscularly was compared with papaveretum and hyoscine for premedication of patients about to undergo cardiac surgery. Midazolam and droperidol proved to be a very satisfactory combination, producing superior sedation and anxiolysis with good cardiovascular stability.
