We report improved ability to name pictures at 2 and 8 months after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatments to the pars triangularis portion of right Broca's homologue in a 57 year-old woman with severe nonfluent/global aphasia (6.5 years post left basal ganglia bleed, subcortical lesion). TMS was applied at 1 Hz, 20 minutes a day, 10 days, over a two-week period. She received no speech therapy during the study. One year after her TMS treatments, she entered speech therapy with continued improvement. TMS may have modulated activity in the remaining left and right hemisph

The amygdala involvement in fear processing has been reported in behavioral, electrophysiological, and functional imaging studies. However, the literature does not provide precise data on the temporal course of facial emotional processing. Intracranial event-related potentials to facial expressions were recorded in epileptic patients implanted with depth electrodes during a presurgical evaluation. Specific potentials to fear beginning 200 ms poststimulus were observed in amygdala, both individually in two patients and in a ten patient population study. These potentials occurred 100 ms earlier

BACKGROUND: The etiology of Tourette syndrome (TS) involves disturbances in the structure and function of the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia mediate habit learning.
OBJECTIVE: To study habit learning in persons with TS.
DESIGN: Patients with TS were compared with normal controls in performance on a probabilistic classification, or habit-learning task (weather prediction).
SETTING: University research institute.
PARTICIPANTS: One hundred twenty-three children and adults, 56 with a diagnosis of TS and 67 healthy control subjects.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Habit learning was assessed by the e

To analyse the functions of different parts of the prefrontal cortex in emotion, patients with different prefrontal surgical excisions were compared on four measures of emotion: voice and face emotional expression identification, social behaviour, and the subjective experience of emotion. Some patients with bilateral lesions of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) had deficits in voice and face expression identification, and the group had impairments in social behaviour and significant changes in their subjective emotional state. Some patients with unilateral damage restricted to the OFC also had de

Tourette syndrome (TS) is characterised by stereotyped involuntary movements, called tics. Some evidence suggests that structural and functional abnormalities of the basal ganglia may explain these motor symptoms. In this study, the probabilistic classification learning (PCL) test was used to evaluate basal ganglia functions in 10 children with less severe tics (Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) scores<30) and in 10 children with more severe symptoms (YGTSS score>30). In the PCL task, participants are asked to decide whether different combinations of four geometric forms (cues) predict ra

BACKGROUND: Recent repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) research in healthy subjects suggests that the emotions anger and anxiety are lateralized in the prefrontal cortex. Low-frequency rTMS over the right prefrontal cortex (PFC) shifts the anterior asymmetry in brain activation to the left hemisphere and reduces anxiety. The same rTMS technique results in enhanced anger-related emotional processing, observed as elevations in attention for angry faces. The current study used low-frequency rTMS over the right PFC and indexed selective attention to fearful faces, hypothesizing a r

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate cognitive outcome in unselected patients with previously diagnosed viral meningitis.
METHODS: Twenty-one unselected patients were examined neurologically, psychiatrically, and psychometrically 25+/-12 months after the acute stage of viral meningitis. The results were compared with the results of twenty-one healthy controls.
RESULTS: Despite of a very good clinical outcome in the post-meningitis group patients performed significantly worse on tasks concerning non-verbal memory functions (BVRT), attention and speed of cognitive performance (WMS-3) even when there was no

Although the interpretation of studies of face recognition in older children, adolescents, and adults with autism is complicated by the fact that participating samples and adopted methodologies vary significantly, there is nevertheless strong evidence indicating processing peculiarities even when task performance is not deficient. Much less is known about face recognition abilities in younger children with autism. This study employed a well-normed task of face recognition to measure this ability in 102 young children with autism, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDDNOS

PURPOSE: Patients with any form of visual disturbance, no matter how unusual, often present first to their ophthalmologist. An example of the Charles Bonnet syndrome as a result of bilateral macular degeneration is presented. The significance of early diagnosis is highlighted as reassurance and explanation of the condition seems to be the cornerstone of management.
METHODS/RESULTS: A chronological case history, results of investigations and management are presented.
CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of Charles Bonnet syndrome should be considered in elderly, cognitively intact patients who present

This study was designed to investigate the role of visual sensory deficits and neglect in perceptual categorization deficits in a group of 35 patients with unilateral cerebral lesions. From theoretical point of view, it was expected that right hemisphere lesions would play a critical role in eliciting perceptual categorization deficits which could not be accounted for by visual sensory deficits or neglect. The results revealed that perceptual categorization deficits were not confined to RHD patients, but they were also found in LHD patients. RHD patients were impaired regardless of the nature

In the Reicher-Wheeler paradigm, fluent readers can identify letters better when they appear in a word than when they appear in either a pronounceable pseudoword (a lexicality effect) or a single letter (a word-letter effect). It was predicted that if both of these effects involve a lexical factor, then adult acquired dyslexic subjects whose deficit prevents access to visual word form should show disruptions of the normal effects on the Reicher-Wheeler task. The results were that dyslexic subjects as well as matched control subjects showed a lexicality effect; however, while the control subjec

Case studies of two individuals who had undergone complete corpus callosotomies are presented. In addition to anecdotal observations, controlled neurobehavioral and neuropsychological testing indicated that although both parents demonstrated the disconnection syndromes unique to "split-brain" patients, they also differed rather dramatically. For example, 1-C's left hemisphere developed bilateral motor control, whereas 2-C demonstrated the presence of two independent forms of conscious-awareness, one of which resided in the right and the other in the left hemisphere. Hence, 2-C's right brain wa

Attention can spread across sensory modalities so that when attention is directed to the visual component of a multisensory object, its task-irrelevant auditory component will also be bestowed with enhanced processing, which operates in either a stimulus-driven or representation-driven manner contingent on whether the visual component is attended based on object category. To date, the visual-to-auditory attentional spreading has been widely hypothesized as an involuntary, automatic process, but this core hypothesis has yet to be tested. In particular, the supraliminal auditory components emplo

The visual system classifies objects into categories, and distinct populations of neurons within the temporal lobe respond preferentially to objects of a given perceptual category. We can also classify the objects we recognize with the sense of touch, but less is known about the neuronal correlates underlying this cognitive function. To address this question, we performed a multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) of functional magnetic resonance imagining (fMRI) activity to identify the cortical areas that can be used to decode the category of objects explored with the hand. We observed that tact

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence of inhibitory control and visual processing impairment in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), knowledge about its corresponding alterations in the brain is still evolving. The current study used counting Stroop functional MRI and the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) to investigate if brain activation of inhibitory control and visual processing would differ in youths with ADHD relative to neurotypical youths.
METHOD: We assessed 25 youths with ADHD [mean age 10.9 (s.d.=2.2) years] and 23 age-, gender- and IQ-matched neurotyp

In-source fragmentation (ISF) is a naturally occurring phenomenon during electrospray ionization (ESI) in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. ISF leads to false metabolite annotation in untargeted metabolomics, prompting misinterpretation of the underlying biological mechanisms. Conventional metabolomic data cleaning mainly focuses on the annotation of adducts and isotopes, and the recognition of ISF features is mainly based on common neutral losses and the LC coelution pattern. In this work, we recognized three increasingly important patterns of ISF features, including (

Prior work has shown that the brain represents memories within a cognitive map that supports inference about connections between individual related events. Real-world adaptive behavior is also supported by recognizing common structure among numerous distinct contexts; for example, based on prior experience with restaurants, when visiting a new restaurant one can expect to first get a table, then order, eat, and finally pay the bill. We used a neurocomputational approach to examine how the brain extracts and uses abstract representations of common structure to support novel decisions. Participa

Glaucoma is a heterogeneous group of diseases that are characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells, which damages the optic nerve head (ONH) and visual field. If glaucoma, the most frequent cause of irretrievable vision loss, is detected at an initial stage, the rate of blindness may be reduced by nearly 50%-55%. Manual diagnosis is a laborious task; it is fairly time consuming and requires a skilled medical provider. With the lack of trained professionals in developing countries, automatic glaucoma diagnosis becomes an increasingly vital tool that aids in detection and disease risk analys

Object conceptual processing has been localized to distributed cortical regions that represent specific attributes. A challenging question is how object semantic space is formed. We tested a novel framework of representing semantic space in the pattern of white matter (WM) connections by extending the representational similarity analysis (RSA) to structural lesion pattern and behavioral data in 80 brain-damaged patients. For each WM connection, a neural representational dissimilarity matrix (RDM) was computed by first building machine-learning models with the voxel-wise WM lesion patterns as f

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neuroimaging studies suggest a role of the right occipital face area (rOFA) in early facial feature processing. However, the degree to which rOFA is necessary for the encoding of facial identity has been less clear. Here we used a state-dependent TMS paradigm, where stimulation preferentially facilitates attributes encoded by less active neural populations, to investigate the role of the rOFA in face perception and specifically in image-independent identity processing. Participants performed a familiarity decision task for famous and unknown target f
