Risk factors, clinical variants and therapeutic outcome of retronychia: a retrospective study of 18 patients.

Retronychia is a form of post-traumatic ingrowing nail disease that involves proximal nail plate embedding into the proximal nail fold, with multiple generations of nail plate beneath the proximal nail. This disease is probably underdiagnosed because of incomplete clinical forms. The aim of this study was to report clinical and aetiological variants of retronychia and to evaluate their therapeutic outcome. A retrospective review was performed on 18 patients who were seen in our institution between 2007 and 2013. The diagnostic criteria for retronychia were paronychia and interruption of nail g

Clinical Science Investigation (CSI) Canterbury: surgical gown length and blood inside gumboots.

BACKGROUND: A gap between the bottom of gowns and the top of gumboots (commonly known as wellingtons or rubber boots outside of New Zealand) makes it possible for blood splashes to enter surgeons' gumboots and contact skin, putting them at risk of exposure to HBV, HCV and HIV. This study investigated the prevalence of blood splashes inside gumboots used by surgical staff at a single hospital. METHOD: Ninety-four pairs of gumboots (91 from male surgeons, 3 from female surgeons) from the hospital operating theatres were used in this study. Each pair of boots was visually inspected for internal

Pathways of load transfer in custom accommodative insoles for people with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Custom accommodative insoles help reduce plantar pressures in people with diabetes who are at risk of developing foot ulcers. We have developed 3D printed custom accommodative insoles with patient-specific geometry and material properties that improve offloading performance compared to traditional insoles. While effective at offloading forefoot pressure, their load redistribution mechanisms across the full foot remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to compare the load redistribution mechanisms and pathways across nine plantar regions between standard and 3D printed insoles u

Factors associated with wearing inadequate outdoor footwear in populations at risk of foot ulceration: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated if people at risk of foot ulceration actually wear the footwear recommended by best practice guidelines to prevent foot ulceration. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of, and factors associated with, wearing inadequate outdoor footwear in those with diabetes or peripheral neuropathy in an inpatient population. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a multi-site cross-sectional study investigating foot conditions in a large representative inpatient population admitted into hospital for any medical reason on one day. A range of explanator

Tinea unguium in the north-west of Iran (1996-2004).

Tinea unguium is a common mycosis in many part of the world including Iran. The prevalence of this mycosis varied depending on time, health level and geographical location. To stabilise the etiological, epidemiological and risk factors of tinea unguium in North-west Iran, a study of patients with suspected dermatophyte infections of their nails was carried out between 1996 and 2004. During this study 590 (354 females and 236 males) patients with clinical presentation of fungal infection in fingernails, toenails or in the both sites, were investigated using direct microscopy and culture of clin

Foot orthotics affect lower extremity kinematics and kinetics during running.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effects of posting and custom-molding of foot orthotics on lower extremity kinematics and kinetics during running. DESIGN: Repeated measures.Background. Several kinematic and kinetic factors have been suggested to increase a runner's risk for injuries. It has been speculated that foot orthotics can be used to reduce injury related complaints or even prevent running injuries by affecting these factors. METHODS: Twenty one volunteers participated in this study. Kinematic and kinetic variables obtained during overground running for medial posting, custom-molding, and

Rheumatic disorders in the South African Negro. Part II. Osteo-arthrosis.

The prevalence of osteo-arthrosis of the hip, the knee, the small joints of the hand and the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe, has been studied in a South African Negro population. The pattern of joint involvement differed considerably from that expected in a White population. Interphalangeal osteo-arthrosis was much less common in Black women than in White, and Heberden's nodes were seen in only 3 of 93 respondents who were over 65 years of age. Osteo-arthrosis of the metacarpophalangeal joints also, was less common in Black women than in White, but the Black men showed a much greater

Validation of a Footwear-Based Gait Analysis System With Action-Related Feedback.

Quantitative gait analysis enables clinicians to evaluate patient mobility and to diagnose neuromuscular disorders. The clinical application of gait analysis is currently limited by the high operating costs of gait laboratories. The use of instrumented footwear that performs out of the lab measurements on subjects' walking patterns is a promising way to overcome this limitation. Besides serving as assessment tools, such devices can also act as retraining tools that help regulate a patient's gait with acoustic or vibrotactile stimuli.

Intractable wounds caused by arteriosclerosis obliterans with end-stage renal disease treated by aggressive debridement and epidermal grafting.

BACKGROUND: Patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) need to avoid skin laceration; amputation is common because of intractability of wounds and complications with other diseases, including diabetes mellitus. We have reported the usefulness of aggressive debridement deep enough to expose bone marrow cells, occlusive dressing, and epidermal grafting for diabetic foot ulcers and wounds from rheumatic diseases. OBJECTIVE: To test whether this experimental protocol is effective to treat intractable wounds in a patient receiving HD accompanied with arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO). METHODS AND RESUL

Methodological Framework for Multi-Cell Posturography Enabling Unconstrained Foot Placement and Open-Source Balance Assessment.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Computer-assisted posturography is utilized to quantify human postural control, yet existing dedicated systems frequently present physical constraints, such as limited sensing surfaces and rigid hardware barriers. In this study, a methodological framework is presented and a structural arrangement (OpenBalance) is designed to implement balance assessment accommodating a wider anthropometric range through zone-based foot placement using a decentralized load cell array, with preliminary implementation details provided in a repository. METHODS: The configuration comprises a

Knowledge and Practices of the Jeddah Population Towards Tinea Pedis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tinea pedis is a widespread fungal infection that primarily affects the feet, with risk factors including excessive sweating and tight-fitting footwear. Preventive measures, such as maintaining clean and dry feet and wearing sandals in moist environments, are key in preventing its occurrence. Despite its prevalence and preventability, there is limited research on the knowledge and practices related to tinea pedis in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted through a validated questionnaire among 696 Jeddah residents utilizing Google Forms that wer

Comparability between wearable inertial sensors and an electronic walkway for spatiotemporal and relative phase data in young children aged 6-11 years.

BACKGROUND: Approaches to gait analysis are evolving rapidly and now include a wide range of options: from e-patches to video platforms to wearable inertial measurement unit systems. Newer options for gait analysis are generally more inclusive for the assessment of children, more cost effective and easier to administer. However, there is limited data on the comparability of newer systems with more established traditional approaches in young children. RESEARCH QUESTION: To determine comparability between the Physilog®5 wearable inertial sensor and GAITRite® electronic walkway for spatiotempora

Analysis of Diabetic Foot Deformation and Plantar Pressure Distribution of Women at Different Walking Speeds.

Official guidelines state that suitable physical activity is recommended for patients with diabetes mellitus. However, since walking at a rapid pace could be associated with increased plantar pressure and potential foot pain, the footwear condition is particularly important for optimal foot protection in order to reduce the risk of tissue injury and ulceration of diabetic patients. This study aims to analyze foot deformation and plantar pressure distribution at three different walking speeds (slow, normal, and fast walking) in dynamic situations. The dynamic foot shape of 19 female diabetic pa
