Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode of humans that infects tens of millions of people worldwide. It is a rarely reported parasitic infestation in Turkey. Disseminated strongyloidiosis may develop in patients with immunodeficiencies. S. stercoralis hyperinfection is often accompanied by sepsis or meningitis with enteric organisms. Glucocorticoid treatment is one of the conditions most specifically associated with triggering hyperinfection, but cases have been reported in association with hematologic malignancy, malnutrition, and AIDS. Anthelminthic agents such as ivermectin have

Adult worms of Strongyloides papillosus were surgically implanted into the duodenum and successfully established in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). These worms persisted in the small intestine for at least four days after implantation. Following decreased fecal output, however, increased death rate and decreased survival time were observed. The increase in death rate and the decrease in survival time correlated with the increase in the number of implanted adult worms. Animals were then intraperitoneally inoculated with extracts from adult S. papillosus, and the pathogenetic effects

The goal of this study was to determine the roles of eosinophils and neutrophils in innate and adaptive protective immunity to larval Strongyloides stercoralis in mice. The experimental approach used was to treat mice with an anti-CCR3 monoclonal antibody to eliminate eosinophils or to use CXCR2-/- mice, which have a severe neutrophil recruitment defect, and then determine the effect of the reduction or elimination of the particular cell type on larval killing. It was determined that eosinophils killed the S. stercoralis larvae in naïve mice, whereas these cells were not required for the accel

For the purpose of clarifying host-finding mechanisms, the infective larvae of Strongyloides ratti were run on an agarose plate which had been placed various attractants around the larvae. They were accumulated at the sites of sodium compounds, serum proteins and albumins. At 20, 30, 40 hours after infection, rats were killed and heads were separated. They were then processed for thin section specimens. Larvae were found in brains, olfactory bulbs and its nerves. These larvae seemed to move along olfactory nerves during descending from the cranial cavity. Another migration study was done by wh

AIM: To investigate the ultrastructural features of the newly hatched larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis in human duodenal mucosa.
METHODS: Duodenal biopsies from an AIDS patient were studied by transmission electron microscopy to investigate morphology, location, and host-worm relations of newly hatched larvae.
RESULTS: Newly hatched larvae were found in the Lieberkuhn crypts within the tunnels formed by migration of parthenogenic females. Delimiting enterocytes were compressed. Release of larvae into the gut lumen was also documented. It was shown that both a thin and a thick membrane sur

Adult worms of Strongyloides ratti, after elimination from the small intestine, were retained in the caecum for at least three days during the infection in mice. This retention was a biological event but not due to a simple mechanical trapping in faeces. In addition to the local mucosal mastocytosis, eosinophil infiltration was remarkable in the caecum around day 10 when adult worms were expelled from there.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) was demonstrated postmortem in a 47-year-old woman initially manifesting severe hypercalcemia and a vertebral compression fracture. Hyperinfection with Strongyloides stercoralis preceded the appearance of ATLL by several months and ultimately dominated the terminal course. Although HTLV-I and S. stercoralis commonly infect the same host, only three other cases of concomitant ATLL and hyperinfection have been reported in English. The apparent rarity of this association suggests that immunologic sequelae of ATLL do not predispose to dissemination and multipl

Anilides bearing a guanidino, thioallophanato, isothioallophanato or amidino group in the ortho position were synthesised (6) for investigations of their anthelmintic effects, and tested against sheep trichostrongylides. The most active anilides are those containing a 5-alkylthio, 5-alkylsulphinyl (alkyl = C3H7, C4H9), 5-phenylthio, 5-phenylsulphinyl or 4-phenylsulphonyloxy group, and a guanidino group substituted at both nitrogen atoms by a methoxycarbonyl group. The most active anthelmintic anilides are the form-, propion-, butyr- and methoxy-acetanilides (e.g. 60, 61, 66, 95, 100, 110). Of

A 63-year-old, white, animal caretaker suffered intermittent abdominal pain and diarrhea of 3 weeks duration. Hematological findings included leukocytosis (18,600) with eosinophilia (73%). Fecal examination revealed Stongyloides rhabditiform larvae which on culture yielded a preponderance of filariform larvae and a few free-living adults. Thiabendazole therapy resulted in rapid recovery. Epidemiological investigation yielded no history of previous Strongyloides infection or exposure; his wife and pet dog were not infected, but about one-third of the dogs in the colony under his care were found
