From evidence to action: identification and strategic application of cholera priority areas for multisectoral interventions (PAMIs) in Sudan (2016-2025).

BACKGROUND: Sudan has a long history of struggling with recurrent cholera outbreaks. The interplay of infrastructure damage, massive displacement, and limited access to safe water and sanitation has increased the risk of cholera transmission. The study aims to identify priority areas for multisectoral interventions (PAMIs) to inform public health policy and ensure evidence-based strategic control of cholera in Sudan. METHODS: In this retrospective study, national cholera data from 2016 to 2024 (excluding 2020-2022) were used. The Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) tool for identifyi

Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease Based on Multi-Modal Domain Adaptation.

Background/Objectives: Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 18-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography (PET) reveal the structural and functional information of the brain from different dimensions, demonstrating considerable clinical and practical value in the computer-aided diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the structure and semantics of different modal data are different, and the distribution between different datasets is prone to the problem of domain shift. Most of the existing methods start from the single-modal data and assume that different datasets me

Unraveling the interconnectedness of trauma-related common mental disorders in Somali refugees: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Refugee populations, particularly Somali refugees, face disproportionately high rates of trauma-related common mental disorders (CMDs) due to prolonged exposure to war, forced displacement, and post-migration adversities. Traditional diagnostic models often conceptualize CMDs, including posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, as distinct disorders, overlooking the symptom-level interconnections that sustain psychological distress. This study employs network analysis to examine the structure of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, identifying cen

The practice, nature, and impact of nurse-led type 2 diabetic foot prevention services and educational programs in Sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the scope of existing practice, nature, and impact of nurse-led type 2 diabetic foot prevention services and educational programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in SSA imposes a heavy burden on current healthcare services. Complications such as foot ulcers can have a significant impact on patient care and healthcare resources. It is imperative to identify patients at risk of developing diabetic foot complications and empower them with diabetes self-management education and support from specialise

Adding Meaning to Memories: How Parietal Cortex Combines Semantic Content with Episodic Experience.

Neuroimaging studies of human memory have consistently found that univariate responses in parietal cortex track episodic experience with stimuli (whether stimuli are 'old' or 'new'). More recently, pattern-based fMRI studies have shown that parietal cortex also carries information about the semantic content of remembered experiences. However, it is not well understood how memory-based and content-based signals are integrated within parietal cortex. Here, in humans (males and females), we used voxel-wise encoding models and a recognition memory task to predict the fMRI activity patterns evoked

Dorsal Striatum Transcriptome Profile Profound Shift in Repeated Aggression Mouse Model Converged to Networks of 12 Transcription Factors after Fighting Deprivation.

Both aggressive and aggression-deprived (AD) species represent pathologic cases intensely addressed in psychiatry and substance abuse disciplines. Previously, we reported that AD mice displayed a higher aggressive behavior score than the aggressive group, implying the manifestation of a withdrawal effect. We employed an animal model of chronic social conflicts, curated in our lab for more than 30 years. In the study, we pursued the task of evaluating key events in the dorsal striatum transcriptome of aggression experienced mice and AD species compared to controls using RNA-Seq profiling. Aggre

Automatic detection of COVID-19 from chest radiographs using deep learning.

INTRODUCTION: The breakdown of a deadly infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (named SARS n-CoV2) back in December 2019 has shown no respite to slow or stop in general. This contagious disease has spread across different lengths and breadths of the globe, taking a death toll to nearly 700 k by the start of August 2020. The number is well expected to rise even more significantly. In the absence of a thoroughly tested and approved vaccine, the onus primarily lies on obliging to standard operating procedures and timely detection and isolation of the infected persons. The det

Measuring improvement in knowledge of drug policy reforms following a police education program in Tijuana, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Mexico's 2009 "narcomenudeo reform" decriminalized small amounts of drugs, shifting some drug law enforcement to the states and mandating drug treatment diversion instead of incarceration. Data from Tijuana suggested limited implementation of this harm reduction-oriented policy. We studied whether a police education program (PEP) improved officers' drug and syringe policy knowledge, and aimed to identify participant characteristics associated with improvement of drug policy knowledge. METHODS: Pre- and post-training surveys were self-administered by municipal police officers to me

Compensatory Recovery after Multisensory Stimulation in Hemianopic Patients: Behavioral and Neurophysiological Components.

Lateralized post-chiasmatic lesions of the primary visual pathway result in loss of visual perception in the field retinotopically corresponding to the damaged cortical area. However, patients with visual field defects have shown enhanced detection and localization of multisensory audio-visual pairs presented in the blind field. This preserved multisensory integrative ability (i.e., crossmodal blindsight) seems to be subserved by the spared retino-colliculo-dorsal pathway. According to this view, audio-visual integrative mechanisms could be used to increase the functionality of the spared circ

From evidence to action to deliver a healthy start for the next generation.

Remarkable progress has been made towards halving of maternal deaths and deaths of children aged 1-59 months, although the task is incomplete. Newborn deaths and stillbirths were largely invisible in the Millennium Development Goals, and have continued to fall between maternal and child health efforts, with much slower reduction. This Series and the Every Newborn Action Plan outline mortality goals for newborn babies (ten or fewer per 1000 livebirths) and stillbirths (ten or fewer per 1000 total births) by 2035, aligning with A Promise Renewed target for children and the vision of Every Woman

Collicular dysfunction in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by (inter alia) an increase in distractibility. The current front-line pharmacotherapies for the treatment of ADHD, namely the psychostimulants methylphenidate and amphetamines, have clear abuse potential, hence there is a strong need to develop new drug treatments for this disorder. Central to this process is the identification of the pathophysiological changes which underlie ADHD. Given the heterogeneity of the disorder, multiple loci are probably involved, providing multiple potential th

An evaluation of retrofit engineering control interventions to reduce perchloroethylene exposures in commercial dry-cleaning shops.

Real-time monitoring was used to evaluate the ability of engineering control devices retrofitted on two existing dry-cleaning machines to reduce worker exposures to perchloroethylene. In one dry-cleaning shop, a refrigerated condenser was installed on a machine that had a water-cooled condenser to reduce the air temperature, improve vapor recovery, and lower exposures. In a second shop, a carbon adsorber was retrofitted on a machine to adsorb residual perchloroethylene not collected by the existing refrigerated condenser to improve vapor recovery and reduce exposures. Both controls were succes

Influence of a full-spectrum aqueous extract of black cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb.) fruits on focus/alertness and executive function: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-and active- controlled, 14-day comparative study in healthy working professionals.

BACKGROUND: Nootropics enhance cognitive functions, including memory, attention, alertness, mood, and reaction time, through diverse neurobiological mechanisms. Caffeine, one of the most widely consumed nootropics, improves cognitive performance primarily by promoting wakefulness and alertness; however, these effects are generally transient. Consequently, there is growing interest in plant-derived, food-grade nootropics that can provide sustained cognitive benefits with a favorable safety profile. In this context, the nootropic efficacy of a full-spectrum aqueous extract of black cardamom frui

An explainable dual-branch transformer-ConvNeXt framework for robust lung histopathology classification.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate histopathological discrimination of lung adenocarcinoma (ACA) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) from benign tissue is a clinically demanding task in which the two malignant subtypes are frequently confused even by trained pathologists. METHODS: We present a dual-branch deep learning framework that couples a hierarchical shifted-window vision transformer (SwinV2-CR-Tiny) with a fully-convolutional masked-autoencoder-pretrained convolutional network (ConvNeXtV2-Tiny) to capture complementary global-contextual and local-textural representations of haematoxylin-and-eosin (H

Virtual practice facilitation as an implementation strategy for launching opioid safety committees for quality improvement in primary care: feasibility, acceptability, and intervention fidelity.

BACKGROUND: Practice facilitation (PF) is an evidence-based multicomponent in-person implementation strategy. COVID-19-related lockdowns caused many implementation initiatives to rapidly shift to virtual settings, but there is limited evidence on PF deployed exclusively using virtual meeting platforms. Our objective was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of virtual PF used in a primary care setting to implement interdisciplinary opioid safety committees (OSCs) to improve care for patients using opioid medicines for persistent pain and reduce high-dose opioid prescribing. We also descr
