BACKGROUND: The impact of myasthenia gravis on patients with thymoma is still controversial when perioperative and long-term outcomes are analyzed. With the unique opportunity of a 35-year follow-up in a single institution, thymomatous myasthenia gravis cohort, we investigated the influence of early and long-term clinical predictors.
METHODS: We reviewed a surgical series of 317 (1972 to 2007) patients with thymoma: clinical and pathologic features were analyzed as prognostic factors matched against the short- and long-term survival and recurrence rates.

We describe the first reported case, in an 82-year-old man, of erythrocytosis caused by an erythropoietin (EPO)-producing thymic carcinoma. The patient underwent computed tomography-guided fine-needle aspiration of a 6-cm anterior mediastinal mass, and histological findings revealed thymic squamous cell carcinoma. The existence of EPO was confirmed immunohistochemically using the tumor tissue. Postoperative clinical improvement of erythrocytosis and the decline of EPO suggest a paraneoplastic nature of erythrocytosis as seen in this patient.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the characteristics of thymoma when associated with MG and to evaluate those conditions that can complicate management and affect survival.
METHODS: The study includes 207 myasthenic patients who were operated on for thymoma, with at least 1-year follow-up from surgery. MG severity and response to treatment, the occurrence of paraneoplastic diseases and extrathymic malignancies, thymoma histologic types and stages, adjuvant therapy, tumor recurrences, and causes of death were recorded.

Carcinoid tumor of the thymus is a rare neoplasm and is currently believed to arise from population of thymic cells of neural crest origin. We present the case of a 43-year-old man with a corticotropin hormone (ACTH) secreting thymus carcinoid. 111In-octreotide scintigraphy demonstrated an intense uptaken on the lesion.
