Timing of bimanual movements and deafferentation: implications for the role of sensory movement effects.

In a repetitive tapping task, the within-hand variability of intertap intervals is reduced when participants tap with both hands instead of single-handedly. This bimanual advantage has been attributed to timer as opposed to motor variance (according to the Wing-Kristofferson model; Helmuth and Ivry 1996) and related to the additional sensory consequences of the movement of the extra hand in the bimanual case (Drewing et al. 2002). In the present study the effect of sensory feedback of the movement on this advantage was investigated by comparing the results of a person (IW) deafferented below t

Prefrontal cortical projections to longitudinal columns in the midbrain periaqueductal gray in macaque monkeys.

The origin and termination of prefrontal cortical projections to the periaqueductal gray (PAG) were defined with retrograde axonal tracers injected into the PAG and anterograde axonal tracers injected into the prefrontal cortex (PFC). The retrograde tracer experiments demonstrate projections to the PAG that arise primarily from the medial prefrontal areas 25, 32, and 10m, anterior cingulate, and dorsomedial areas 24b and 9, select orbital areas 14c, 13a, Iai, 12o, and caudal 12l, and ventrolateral area 6v. Only scattered cells were retrogradely labeled in other areas in the PFC. Caudal to the

Role of spinal glutamatergic transmission in the ascending limb of the micturition reflex pathway in the rat.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of glutamate receptors at spinal synapses on the ascending limb of the micturition reflex. In urethane-anesthetized female rats, a tungsten electrode was inserted stereotaxically into the dorsal part of the rostral pons to record field potentials which were evoked by electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve (PLN) (1-15 V, 0.05 ms pulse duration at 100-300 Hz, 5-30 ms train duration). The effects of glutamate receptor antagonists administered intrathecally (i.t.) on the PLN-evoked field potentials in the dorsal part of the rostral brainstem were

Activation of water-responsive laryngeal afferents: role of epithelial ion transport.

The role of epithelial ion transport in the activation of water-responsive laryngeal afferent was investigated in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats. Single-fiber recordings from the peripheral cut-end of the superior laryngeal nerve were carried out to identify water-responsive laryngeal afferent. Substitution of chloride ions (Cl-) of the Krebs solution with gluconate activated the water-responsive endings when the gluconate concentration was > or = 50 mM. Amiloride (10(-4), 10(-3) and 10(-2) M), an inhibitor of epithelial sodium channels, reduced the water-responsiveness of these af

[Anal sphincter electromyography, bulbocavernosus reflex and pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials in diagnosis of neurogenic lumbosacral lesions with disorders of bladder and large intestine emptying and erectile dysfunction].

The diagnostic value of anal sphincter electromyography (EMG), electrical bulbocavernosus reflex (BCR) and pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) was studied in 16 male patients with disturbances of bladder function or defecation or with erectile dysfunction (ED) of at least several weeks' duration. All 16 patients had proven neurogenic disorders in the lumbosacral region. Eleven presented with bladder dysfunction, four with defecation problems, and nine with ED (some had more than one symptom). Fifteen patients had a pathological sphincter EMG, 14 patients a pathological BCR, and six

Changes in sensation after nerve injury or amputation: the role of central factors.

Dynamic changes in somatosensory cortical maps are known to occur in experimental animals subjected to peripheral nerve transection or amputation. To study the sensory effects of central nervous system adaptation to temporary or permanent loss of input from a part of the hand, multimodality quantitative sensory tests were carried out in 11 patients with complete traumatic division and repair of the median or ulnar nerves and in six patients who had undergone amputation of one or more digits. As expected, vibration, two point discrimination, and tactile thresholds were raised in the territory o

[Intraoperative monitoring with evoked potentials in spinal interventions].

This review article delineates the physiology and methodological principles of somatosensory (SEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP), as well as our own results in 40 patients monitored during spinal surgery. In 29 patients an intraoperative SEP and in 15 patients a MEP monitoring was performed. Both modalities were applied in 4 patients. 19 patients had an intramedullary tumor, 15 patients had an intradural extramedullary tumor, 4 patients had an extradural mass lesion, and 2 patients had a spinal arteriovenous malformation. Technical problems with SEP monitoring occurred in 3 of 29 cases, pr

Pain perception and alleviation in animals.

In the last 2 decades there have been substantial advances in our knowledge of the scientific basis of the mechanisms of pain. Nociceptors or pain receptors are widespread in the skin and tissues of animals; chemical mediation of nociceptor excitation may provide a key for understanding the peripheral phenomena related to pain. The expression of pain in animals involves multiple ascending and descending branches, as well as specialized pain-signaling mechanisms in the spinal cord. The importance of these different pathways varies with species and circumstances. Endogenous neural systems in the

The investigation of traumatic lesions of the brachial plexus by electromyography and short latency somatosensory potentials evoked by stimulation of multiple peripheral nerves.

A study of 10 patients with brachial plexus trauma was performed to determine whether the diagnostic accuracy of sensory evoked potentials (SEPs) may be improved by using stimulation of multiple peripheral nerves (median, radial, musculocutaneous and ulnar). In addition, the relative advantages of SEPs and peripheral electrophysiological studies were considered. SEP patterns following most common brachial plexus lesions were predictable. Injuries to the upper trunk affected the musculocutaneous and radial SEPs predominantly. Lower trunk or medial cord lesions primarily affected ulnar SEPs. Dif

Altered neural electrophysiological properties in the anterior cingulate cortex in a mouse model of Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disease associated with multiple metabolic and behavioural abnormalities converging into a distinctive clinical phenotype characterized by insatiable appetite leading to hyperphagia and eventual morbid obesity. The PWS spectrum results from deficiencies in paternally imprinted chromosome 15q11-13 region clustering around non-coding RNA multiple-repeat gene Snord116. A PWS mouse model with paternal Snord116 deletion (Snord116del) revealed multiple expected behavioural traits but failed to reproduce obesity in experimental paradigms des

Anatomical bases of fast parietal grasp control in humans: A diffusion-MRI tractography study.

The dorso-posterior parietal cortex (DPPC) is a major node of the grasp/manipulation control network. It is assumed to act as an optimal forward estimator that continuously integrates efferent outflows and afferent inflows to modulate the ongoing motor command. In agreement with this view, a recent per-operative study, in humans, identified functional sites within DPPC that: (i) instantly disrupt hand movements when electrically stimulated; (ii) receive short-latency somatosensory afferences from intrinsic hand muscles. Based on these results, it was speculated that DPPC is part of a rapid gra

Step phase-related excitability changes in spino-olivocerebellar paths to the c1 and c3 zones in cat cerebellum.

1. Chronically implanted microwires were used to record extracellular field potentials generated in the c1 and c3 zones in the cortex of lobules V and VI of the cerebellum by non-noxious stimuli delivered to the superficial radial nerve in the ipsilateral forelimb. Responses due to input via climbing fibre afferents were studied; their latency and other characteristics identified them as mediated mainly via the dorsal funiculus spino-olivocerebellar path (DF-SOCP). 2. Responses at individual sites were studied repeatedly with a range of stimulus intensities and during two different behaviours:

Neuromediator and hormonal perturbations in fibromyalgia syndrome: results of chronic stress?

Since the first comprehensive description of the symptoms of FMS by Yunus et al (1981), numerous investigations have confirmed that FMS is a clinical entity. However, the aetiology of the syndrome is still not fully elucidated. It seems, however, logical to place the origin of the disorder in the muscle. Muscle pain, especially at the muscle-tendon junctions, fatigue and stiffness are the first symptoms. A malfunction of energy metabolism has been detected in part of the muscle fibres. However, it has to be considered that the muscle is not an isolated entity. Its activity is controlled by seg

Release to the cerebral ventricles of substances with possible transmitter function in the caudate nucleus.

1. One caudate nucleus of the anaesthetized cat was superfused by perfusing the anterior horn of one lateral cerebral ventricle. The perfusates were examined for their content in acetylcholine (ACh), dopamine, homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), at rest and after a variety of stimuli.2. When prostigmine was added to the perfusion fluid, ACh appeared in the effluent; its concentration tended to rise in the course of an experiment. Various afferent stimuli, all of which caused evoked responses recorded from the contra-lateral caudate nucleus, increased the ACh content of the

Current understanding of meningeal and cerebral vascular function underlying migraine headache.

BACKGROUND: The exact mechanisms underlying the onset of a migraine attack are not completely understood. It is, however, now well accepted that the onset of the excruciating throbbing headache of migraine is mediated by the activation and increased mechanosensitivity (i.e. sensitization) of trigeminal nociceptive afferents that innervate the cranial meninges and their related large blood vessels. OBJECTIVES: To provide a critical summary of current understanding of the role that the cranial meninges, their associated vasculature, and immune cells play in meningeal nociception and the ensuing

Brainstem respiratory networks: building blocks and microcircuits.

Breathing movements in mammals are driven by rhythmic neural activity generated within spatially and functionally organized brainstem neural circuits comprising the respiratory central pattern generator (CPG). This rhythmic activity provides homeostatic regulation of gases in blood and tissues and integrates breathing with other motor acts. We review new insights into the spatial-functional organization of key neural microcircuits of this CPG from recent multidisciplinary experimental and computational studies. The emerging view is that the microcircuit organization within the CPG allows the g

Relationship between BDNF expression in major striatal afferents, striatum morphology and motor behavior in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and transgenic mouse models of HD show neuronal loss in the striatum as a major feature, which contributes to cognitive and motor manifestations. Reduced expression of the neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in striatal afferents may play a role in neuronal loss. How progressive loss of BDNF expression in different cortical or subcortical afferents contributes to striatal atrophy and behavioral dysfunction in HD is not known, and may best be determined in animal models. We compared age-dependent alterations of BDNF mRNA expression in ma

Characteristics and clinical applications of ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

Recently, ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) have been described and added to the neuro-otologic test battery as a new measure for the vestibulo-ocular reflex. oVEMPs represent extraocular muscle activity in response to otolith stimulation e.g. by air-conducted sound or bone-conducted vibration. In response to vestibular stimulation, electromyographic activity of the extraocular muscles can be recorded by means of surface electrodes placed beneath the contralateral eye. oVEMPs are likely to reflect predominantly utricular function, while the widely established cervical vesti
