BACKGROUND: Soybean is one of most important oilseed crop worldwide, however, its production is often limited by many insect pests. Bean pyralid is one of the major soybean leaf-feeding insects in China. To explore the defense mechanisms of soybean resistance to bean pyralid, the comparative transcriptome sequencing was completed between the leaves infested with bean pyralid larvae and no worm of soybean (Gantai-2-2 and Wan82-178) on the Illumina HiSeq™ 2000 platform.
RESULTS: In total, we identified 1744 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the leaves of Gantai-2-2 (1064) and Wan82-178 (

Pesticides are typically applied as mixtures and or sequentially to soil and plants during crop production. A common scenario is herbicide application at planting followed by sequential fungicide applications post-emergence. Fungicides depending on their spectrum of activity may alter and impact soil microbial communities. Thus there is a potential to impact soil processes responsible for herbicide degradation. This may change herbicide efficacy and environmental fate characteristics. Our study objective was to determine the effects of 4 peanut fungicides, chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1…

Stems of giant miscanthus-a perennial grass crop-were investigated in this study. The Kürschner cellulose content was determined to be 52.8 wt%, indicating that this feedstock holds considerable promise for cellulose isolation. For the first time, cellulose was isolated from giant miscanthus stems via a modified nitric acid process involving treatment of the feedstock with nitric acid at the first stage with fivefold acid recycling. The isolated cellulose samples were characterized by consistently high and mutually comparable quality. A high α-cellulose content of 92.0-94.0 wt% and a high degr

The threat posed by antibiotic contamination to agricultural ecosystems requires effective alleviation strategies. This study characterized the multi-level regulatory network by which Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) restore soybean carbon metabolism under florfenicol stress. In a pot experiment across three growth stages (VE, V1, V2), florfenicol suppressed photosynthetic systems, reducing chlorophyll content by 19-65%, Fv/Fm by 30-56%, and Rubisco activity by 31-36%. Fe₃O₄-NPs treatment (40-80 mg/kg) reversed these effects, increasing chlorophyll content (up to 88%), enhancing chlorophyll fluoresce

Vascular wilt pathogens induce xylem blockages that disrupt plant water transport, posing critical threats to agricultural productivity and food security. Key processes including xylem transport, vessel blockage, and pathogen spread within the xylem remain poorly understood, largely due to our limited ability to internally monitor infected tissues. This review explores how complementary mathematical modeling alongside laboratory studies can elucidate features governing these critical processes. I first provide a brief history of xylem imaging and quantification, highlighting technological adva

Glyphosate is the most extensively applied herbicide and can be absorbed by non-target plants potentially altering their chemical profile. Coffee, the second most consumed beverage worldwide, relies on glyphosate use to sustain productivity. However, limited evidence exists regarding absorption of soil-applied glyphosate, its possible translocation into coffee beans, and chemical changes. This study investigated the impact of different glyphosate application techniques on chemical composition and residue accumulation in Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora beans. Plants were subjected to seven

Biomass-based CDs constitute a rapidly developing, eco-friendly category of nanomaterials engineered mainly for ecological biosensing applications. By utilizing organic materials, including crop residues, botanical wastes and discarded food products, as the carbon source or precursor, these CDs offer a green synthesis method that avoids the risk of traditional chemical synthesis. As these green CDs are fabricated from natural precursors, these nanomaterials may contain surface-bound heteroatoms, like sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorus, derived from their organic feedstocks. Therefore, these func

Soil salinity presents a significant nutritional challenge, characterized by high sodium (Na+) levels, which hamper agricultural productivity. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and biochar have gained attention as sustainable methods to mitigate abiotic stresses. However, there is limited information on using ZnO NPs combined with biochar to reduce salinity stress across different salinity levels ((i) non-saline, (ii) slightly saline, (iii) moderately saline, and (iv) highly saline). This study investigated the effects of applying biochar (1.3 w w-1in soil) and ZnO NPs (priming at 50 mg l-1an

BACKGROUND: Leucoptera coffeella is a key pest of coffee crops in Brazil, causing significant damage by mining coffee leaves. Reports of reduced effectiveness of chemical control measures highlight the need to investigate potential resistance mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of control failure, resistance levels and enzymatic activity in Brazilian field populations of L. coffeella exposed to neurotoxic insecticides.
RESULTS: A total of 35 field populations of L. coffeella were collected and tested in the laboratory using filter paper discs treated with insecticide solutions.

Colletotrichum species are important fungal pathogens that cause fruit rots leading to pre and postharvest losses of a broad range of Solanaceae crops, including bell and non-bell pepper and fresh-market and processing tomato. We performed a phylogenetic and pathogenic characterization of Colletotrichum isolates collected in the Mid-Atlantic United States from mature and immature Capsicum annum and Solanum lycopersicum fruits. A total of 149 Colletotrichum sp. isolates were obtained, distributed among 18 different gapdh locus-based haplotypes, and 11 recognized Colletotrichum species according

Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental pollutant that severely threatens crop productivity and food safety. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying Cd detoxification and tolerance in sorghum remain largely elusive. Herein, we functionally characterized SbWRKY6, a Cd‑induced WRKY transcription factor that localizes to the nucleus and functions as a transcriptional activator. Stable overexpression of SbWRKY6 significantly enhanced Cd tolerance in sorghum, as evidenced by improved growth performance, mitigated oxidative damage, and decreased Cd concentration in plant tissues, whereas si

Old-growth grasslands assemble over millennia and support high biodiversity and many ecosystem services, but continue to undergo widespread destruction for production of crops, timber, and minerals. How biodiversity recovers after grassland destruction and the functional consequences of this recovery can be informed by plant functional traits-i.e., morpho-physiological features that influence growth, survival, and reproduction. Yet we lack understanding of how functional traits differ between old-growth and secondary (i.e., recovering) grassland plant species at the global scale, hindering und

Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.) are typically monoecious, with both male and female flowers developing on the same plant. Successful fertilization relies on the synchronized release of pollen from the anthers of male flowers and its subsequent germination on the stigma of female flowers. However, the coordinated regulatory mechanisms underlying these processes remain largely unknown. Here, we show that treatment with the JA biosynthesis inhibitor dihydrocoumarin significantly suppresses both anther dehiscence and pollen germination, indicating that JA signaling may regulate male fertility in cu

Crop productivity around the world is largely constrained by salt-induced stress, a key abiotic factor. Although oat (Avena sativa L.) can withstand challenging environmental conditions, the physiological and molecular responses underlying salt tolerance during germination and early seedling development remain insufficiently understood. To investigate these responses, 28 oat varieties were evaluated at the germination stage, and two contrasting varieties, the salt-tolerant Mengshi No. 1 (MS) and salt-sensitive Morgan (MG), were selected for detailed analysis under a severe NaCl treatment (300

Fungi in Alternaria sections Infectoriae and Pseudoalternaria are commonly associated with commercially important crops, yet their biosystematics remains difficult to resolve because standard molecular markers often lack sufficient phylogenetic resolution. In this study, we used candidate loci identified in previous phylogenomic analyses to develop four new molecular markers (SIP-03, SIP-04, SIP-06, and SIP-08) that were specifically designed to be highly informative for these two sections. The performance of these new markers was evaluated using 237 strains collected primarily from wheat in C

Maize, a critical staple crop in Zambia, faces persistent threats from foliar diseases such as Gray Leaf Spot, Northern Corn Leaf Blight, and Maize Streak Virus, significantly affecting smallholder productivity. Limited access to expert diagnostics, coupled with complex field conditions including occlusions and variable lighting, necessitates accessible, real-time disease detection systems tailored to local environments. To address this gap, this study first developed a novel field-captured dataset of Zambian maize leaf images, annotated with bounding boxes for disease lesions and labeled by d
