Postnatal depression, eating, exercise, and vomiting before and during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the postnatal distress and the eating, exercise, and weight losing behavior of women before and during pregnancy. METHOD: The subjects were healthy women who had given birth to a singleton healthy baby in the week before the study. They were drawn from two consecutive series of mothers of babies whose birth weights were either < or =2,500 g or >2,500 g. A total of 181 women were interviewed using a standardized interview modified for pregnancy and related behaviors. They also completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Distress Questionnaire. RESULTS: Regression analysis produced

Biomarkers of reproductive psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: While biomarkers are widely used in other medical fields, psychiatry has yet to introduce reliable biological diagnostic tools. Female reproductive transitions provide a unique window of opportunity for investigating psychiatric biomarkers. Hormonal changes across menstruation, pregnancy, parturition and perimenopause can have dramatic effects on mental health in vulnerable individuals, enabling the identification of unique biomarkers associated with these fluctuations. AIMS: This review integrates current evidence concerning potential biomarkers, with focus on recent human studie

Postmarketing safety profile of brexanolone: a pharmacovigilance analysis based on FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).

OBJECTIVE: Brexanolone (Zulresso®) that was approved for the USA in March 2019 is indicated for the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD), but information on adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with its use is limited. The main aim of this study was to explore the postmarketing safety profile of brexanolone. METHODS: In our case/non-case pharmacovigilance study based on the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), the reporting odds ratio and information component with 95% confidence intervals were estimated as measures of disproportionate reporting. Primary disproportionality anal

Randomized controlled trial of a home-visiting intervention on infant cognitive development in peri-urban South Africa.

AIM: To determine whether, in an impoverished South African community, an intervention that benefitted infant attachment also benefitted cognitive development. METHOD: Pregnant females were randomized to intervention (n=220) and no-treatment control groups (n=229). The intervention was home-based parenting support for attachment, delivered until 6 months postpartum. At 18 months, infants were assessed on attachment and cognitive development (Bayley Scales Mental Development Index [MDI]) (n=127 intervention, n=136 control participants). Infant MDI was examined in relation to intervention, soci

Effects of cocaine on maternal behavior and neurochemistry.

Drug addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder that involves drug seeking and abuse despite the negative social and health consequences. While the potential effects of cocaine on child development have been extensively studied over the last 30 years, few researchers have focused on the effects of cocaine on maternal behavior, which includes offspring care and maternal aggression towards an unfamiliar individual. In humans, maternal cocaine use can lead to child neglect, abuse, and disrupt the mother-child bond. While it has been argued the developmental effects of maternal cocaine use on child

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in post-partum depressive mothers.

UNLABELLED: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychiatric complication observed in women after they give birth. Some women are particularly sensitive to hormonal changes, starting in early menarche, thus increasing their vulnerability to psychological stressing agents that are triggered by environmental and physiological factors throughout their lives. Decreased serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels have been associated to different neuropsychiatric conditions and BDNF has been considered as a candidate marker for such dysfunctions. The goal of this study was to co

Perinatal risk factors for schizophrenia: diagnostic specificity and relationships with maternal psychopathology.

Although a growing body of evidence supports the hypothesis that exposure to obstetric complications (OCs) increases the vulnerability for schizophrenia, some questions remain unanswered regarding the diagnostic specificity and the etiological significance of this association. Associations with a history of OCs have been reported for other severe psychiatric disorders, such as autism, anorexia nervosa, or psychotic affective disorder. Thus, OCs may increase in a relatively non-specific way the vulnerability for a range of severe mental disorders, the expression of this vulnerability depending

Childbirth as an anticipated trauma during pregnancy: pretraumatic stress symptoms in primiparous women.

INTRODUCTION: Women can develop anticipated traumatic reactions related to the forthcoming delivery through "pretraumatic stress" symptoms. The present study aims at: a) exploring the frequency of probable pretraumatic stress disorder in primiparous pregnant women, b) evidencing associated features of pretraumatic stress symptoms and c) exploring which specific components of antenatal anxiety are associated with pretraumatic stress symptoms. METHODS: A sample of 100 primiparous pregnant women completed an online questionnaire assessing pretraumatic stress, fear of childbirth, depressive and a

Air pollution and pregnancy.

Increased fossil fuel usage and extreme climate change events have led to global increases in greenhouse gases and particulate matter with 99% of the world's population now breathing polluted air that exceeds the World Health Organization's recommended limits. Pregnant women and neonates with exposure to high levels of air pollutants are at increased risk of adverse health outcomes such as maternal hypertensive disorders, postpartum depression, placental abruption, low birth weight, preterm birth, infant mortality, and adverse lung and respiratory effects. While the exact mechanism by which ai

Characterizing the nature of worry in a sample of perinatal women with generalized anxiety disorder.

Prevalence of perinatal anxiety disorders continues to grow, with estimates greater than those of postpartum depression. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most commonly reported perinatal anxiety disorder, yet very little is known about the worry content experienced during the perinatal period in those with GAD. This study investigated worry content and frequency in a sample of perinatal women (n = 20) and age-matched nonperinatal women (n = 20) diagnosed with GAD. Participants completed the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) to assess worry severity, in addition to providing their

Effects of fetal alcohol exposure on infant reaction time.

Fetal alcohol exposure is associated with slower reaction times (RTs) in children, suggesting an alcohol-related deficit in "speed of central processing." This study examined effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on a new paradigm which, for the first time, directly assesses RT in infancy. RT was assessed in 103 Black, inner-city, 6.5-month-olds born to women recruited prenatally based on alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Maternal drinking was related to longer RTs and to fewer fast responses, after controlling for potential confounders. The incidence of fast performance was reduced in infa

Prevalence of depressive symptoms in pregnant and postnatal HIV-positive women in Ukraine: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression among HIV-positive women has negative implications for HIV-related and other maternal and infant outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the burden and correlates of perinatal depression among HIV-positive women in Ukraine, a lower middle income country with one of the largest HIV-positive populations in Europe. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys nested within the Ukraine European Collaborative Study were conducted of HIV-positive women at delivery and between 1 and 12 months postpartum. Depressive symptoms in the previous month were assessed using a

Mania triggered by sleep loss and risk of postpartum psychosis in women with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Women with bipolar disorder are at high risk of affective psychoses following childbirth (i.e. "postpartum psychosis", PP) and there is a need to identify which factors underlie this increased risk. Vulnerability to mood dysregulation following sleep loss may influence risk of PP, as childbirth is typified by sleep disruption. We investigated whether a history of mood episodes triggered by sleep loss was associated with PP in women with bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: Participants were 870 parous women with BD recruited to the Bipolar Disorder Research Network. Lifetime diagnoses

Maternal fluoxetine treatment in the postpartum period: effects on platelet serotonin and plasma drug levels in breastfeeding mother-infant pairs.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum major depression, a frequently (10%) occurring complication of childbirth, adversely affects the mother's functioning, the mother-infant relationship, and the child's subsequent development and propensity for later psychopathology. Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are effective in treating postpartum depression, concerns have been raised regarding their use in lactating women. Although plasma drug levels of infants who are exposed to SSRIs through breast milk are low compared with those typically seen in patients, infant levels in some reports do s

Mitochondrial health, prenatal distress, and gestational age: investigation of cf-mtDNA and GDF15 in two pregnancy studies from the USA and Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy outcomes are influenced by maternal distress but the pathways underlying these effects are still unknown. Mitochondria, crucial for energy production and stress adaptation, may link psychosocial stress to its biological effects, especially during pregnancy when energy demands significantly increase. This study explores two mitochondrial markers-circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA (cf-mtDNA) and Growth Differentiation Factor-15 (GDF15)-as potential mitochondrial health indicators linking maternal distress to pregnancy outcomes in two longitudinal studies from the USA a

[Infanticide in the postpartum period: about a clinical case].

BACKGROUND: Infanticide is an extremely traumatic criminal act, which has psychopathologic repercussions and severe sociofamilial consequences. It is marked by its plurality of forms, the variety of its aspects and the frequency of its hidden cases. Circumstances and modes of completion of the infanticide act are variable according to the nature of the author and the sociocultural context. Infanticide is often situated within the framework of an acute and a chronic structured psychiatric pathology (puerperal psychosis, maniacodepressive psychosis, schizophrenia, epilepsy, substance abuse, etc.
