Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and risk factors among schoolchildren at the University of Gondar Community School, Northwest Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections are among the major public health problems in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their distribution is mainly a … compared to other age groups. The predominant intestinal parasite was Hymenolepis nana, followed by Entamoeba histolytica/dispar and Ascaris lumbricoides with 42 (13.8%), 28 (9.2%), 18 (5.9%), respectively. Hand washing practice and ways of transportation were statistically associated with intestinal parasitic infections. Children in grades 1 to 3 had a hig …

Many F. hepatica-infected children were coinfected by other parasites. Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, Giardia intestinalis, Blastocystis hominis, Hymenolepis nana and Ascaris lumbricoides infection resulted in risk factors for F. hepatica infection. Amoebic liver abscess in travellers: indication for image-guided puncture?

Although amoebic liver abscess due to Entamoeba histolytica is one of the most common parasitic infections worldwide, invasive disease remains uncommon in industrialized countries. Metronidazole is the standard of care for complicated and uncomplicated invasive amoebiasis. Puncture of amebic liver abscesses is a treatment option primarily for complicated abscesses (localized in left lobe, multiple, and/or pyogenic abscesses). The role of image-guided percutaneous puncture in initially uncomplicated liver abscess formations still remains unanswered. A subset of patients with uncomplicated amoeb…

The intestinal parasites Entamoeba histolytica and Strongyloides stercoralis were predictors of LBW despite their low prevalence in the cohort. Prevalence and species distribution of intestinal parasites: a four-year retrospective study at Burao general hospital, Somaliland.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and species distribution of intestinal parasites through a four-year retrospective analysis at Burao General Hospital in Somaliland, to provide insights into the local epidemiological landscape and inform targeted interventions and resource allocation for disease control. RESULTS: Giardia intestinalis (57.81%) and Entameba histolytica/E. dispar (41.85%) were the most prevalent parasites. Males showed higher infection rates than females, particularly G. intestinalis and E. histolytica/E. dispar. The 15-22-year age group had the highest pr

Hepatic and inferior vena caval thrombosis: vascular complication of amebic liver abscess.

Although amebic liver abscess is a common disease, it is a rare cause of venous thrombosis. Computed tomography (CT) scan is an ideal tool for diagnosing the various complications associated with liver abscess. We describe a case of amebic liver abscess in a patient who developed a rare vascular complication of hepatic vein and inferior vena cava thrombosis.

Dilated cardiomyopathy and amebic gastritis in a giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).

An approximately 11-mo-old female giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) exhibited anorexia, lethargy, hypothermia, depression, and minimal response to external stimuli. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed an enlarged heart, with free gas and fluid in the abdomen. Abdominocentesis produced a clear brown fluid with an acute to subacute septic suppurative exudate. Cardiac ultrasonography revealed a dilated, thin-walled left ventricle with a comparatively low fractional shortening. Despite intensive supportive care, the anteater died. Postmortem findings included gastric ulceration with pe

[Ulcerative colitis or amebic colitis--a case report].

The large intestine reacts relatively monomorphically to different stimuli. From this differential-diagnostic problems may result. The history of a patient is described which could be pursued retrospectively and prospectively over 14 years and during the course of which the correction of the diagnosis ulcerous colitis into chronic relapsing amoebic colitis was necessary. As a conclusion is emphasized that in every symptomatology of colitis primarily bacterial and parasitologic examinations of the faeces should be brought about and it must be also thought of spontaneous amoebic infections in ou

A Case of Fulminant Amebiasis in a Female Commercial Sex Worker in Japan Requiring Subtotal Colectomy: A Literature Review and Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Fulminant amebiasis is a rare, potentially lethal condition caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It causes intestinal perforation and generalized peritonitis, and treatment requires an emergency operation and the administration of anti-amoebic drugs. Although E. histolytica infections are more commonly reported in men who have sex with men, we report a successfully treated case of fulminant amebiasis in a female commercial sex worker (CSW). This report presents a review of previously reported cases. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old woman with a 4-year history as a CSW presented to t…
