Resource utilization and surgical risk in pediatric pneumatosis intestinalis.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) in children, excluding necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), is typically managed non-operatively with bowel rest, antibiotics, and total parenteral nutrition (TPN). However, guidance is limited on estimating the risk of requiring surgery, complicating decisions about the duration of non-operative medical treatment. This study aimed to assess the management of non-NEC PI and identify factors associated with surgical intervention. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients aged 6 months to 21 years diagnosed with PI from 2010 to 2023 at a f

Xanthan gum intake modifies the colon microbiota profile and causes mild colon inflammation in rats.

Xanthan gum is commonly used in the food industry to adjust food consistency and to improve the safety of swallowing liquids and food in people with dysphagia. The pro-inflammatory effect of xanthan gum is acknowledged in the literature. This study aimed to examine the effect of chronic xanthan gum supplementation in the diet on intestinal inflammatory processes in adult Wistar rats at three different doses. After the tenth week of treatment, white adipose tissue (epididymal, retroperitoneal, and mesenteric) was collected, and the distal colon was dissected and processed for cytokine and immun

A Novel Rapid 3D Tissue-Clearing and Staining Approach for Enteric Neurovascular Imaging and Pathology Applications.

Background and Aims: Neurovascular abnormalities, such as aberrant nerve migration in Hirschsprung's disease and reduced vascular density in necrotizing enterocolitis, are frequently observed in intestinal diseases. Traditional 2-dimensional (2D) staining methods are complicated, time-consuming and fail to comprehensively visualize the intricate neurovascular structures and morphology of the intestine. This study focuses on evaluating a novel 3D staining technique that promises simpler, faster, and more effective visualization of intact neurovascular structures in the colon. Additionally, it a

A rare combination of gastroschisis, jejunal atresia, colonic atresia, and midgut malrotation in a newborn: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gastroschisis is a congenital full-thickness anterior abdominal wall defect that allows bowel evisceration without a covering sac. While most cases are isolated and have good outcomes, complex gastroschisis involves associated intestinal pathology and carries significantly higher morbidity and mortality. The simultaneous occurrence of jejunal atresia, colonic atresia, and midgut malrotation in the setting of gastroschisis is extraordinarily rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A male infant was delivered at 36 weeks' gestation following an antenatal diagnosis of gastroschisis

Potential Neonatal Donors in Australia: A National Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Neonatal organ donation could significantly expand the deceased donor pool, but referral pathways and acceptance criteria remain highly variable worldwide and determination of neurological death in neonatal patients has traditionally been considered challenging. Our national study aimed to determine the potential proportion of neonates eligible for donation after neurological and circulatory determination of death in Australia and to identify reasons for ineligibility. METHODS: We analyzed the Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network data for neonates who died in

Pathological, Immunohistochemical, and Bacteriological Characterization of Salmonellosis in Bearded Dragons (Pogona vitticeps).

Salmonella spp. is a major zoonotic pathogen. Although reptiles are mostly considered subclinical carriers, clinical disease may develop following immunosuppression. Clinical salmonellosis in reptiles has been extensively reported; however, the condition has been rarely described in bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). We retrospectively analyzed six cases of salmonellosis in bearded dragons and characterized the pathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological findings. Clinical signs and gross findings were mostly non-specific. Histological findings mainly consisted of fibrinonecrotizin

The association between red blood cell transfusion timing and the development of retinopathy of prematurity: Application of the two-phase theory.

PURPOSE: Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions are believed to be associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), but the underlying mechanism is not fully understood, partly due to the lack of information on RBC transfusion timing. The aim was to determine the association between the timing and amount of RBC transfusions and the development and severity of ROP. METHODS: This retrospective dual-center cohort study included 1177 neonates born in 2004-2022 with a gestational age at birth ≤28 weeks. Primary outcomes were any stage ROP and severe ROP based on maximum staging. Phase I of ROP was def

Association between Infant Birth Size Classification and Development of Morbidities in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Morbidities of prematurity are often analyzed as if their epidemiology is shared, but this assumption may mask key differences in morbidity risk. This study assesses the association between three birth size metrics and development of chronic lung disease (CLD), severe retinopathy of prematurity (sROP), severe intraventricular hemorrhage (sIVH), and severe necrotizing enterocolitis (sNEC) when stratified by gestational age (GA) with morbidity-specific GA ranges and covariates. METHODS: For each morbidity, data from the Pediatrix Clinical Data Warehouse (2013-2018) were included f
