Intestinal helminthic infections diagnosed by colonoscopy in a regional hospital during 2001-2008.

The present study investigated characteristics of 24 parasite infection cases detected during colonoscopy in a regional hospital from January 2001 to December 2008. Sixteen patients were confirmed with Trichuris trichiura infection, 6 patients were with Ascaris lumbricoides infection, 1 patient with Enterobius vermicularis infection, and 1 patient with Anisakis infection. Among them, 7 patients (43.8%) were asymptomatic. Colonoscopy findings were normal in 18 patients (75.0%). Among the patients with T. trichiura infection, colonoscopy showed several erosions in 2 patients (8.3%) and non-speci

Spatial co-distribution of neglected tropical diseases in the east African great lakes region: revisiting the justification for integrated control.

OBJECTIVE: To determine spatial patterns of co-endemicity of schistosomiasis mansoni and the soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm in the Great Lakes region of East Africa, to help plan integrated neglected tropical disease programmes in this region. METHOD: Parasitological surveys were conducted in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Burundi in 28 213 children in 404 schools. Bayesian geostatistical models were used to interpolate prevalence of these infections across the study area. Interpolated prevalence maps were overlaid to determine areas of c

Trichinellosis and poverty in a Romanian industrial area: an epidemiological study and brief review of literature.

OBJECTIVE: Trichinellosis is a foodborne parasitic disease that is acquired by humans through ingestion of raw or inadequately cooked meat containing larvae of different Trichinella species. During a high endemic year, Hunedoara County, part of Transylvania region, was the second most affected Romanian county, with an incidence of 84.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The objective of this study was to bring new epidemiological and clinical data on human trichinellosis from an endemic former industrial area characterized by high rates of poverty and unemployment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data have

Endohelminth parasites from salmonids in intensive culture from southern Chile.

A total of 228 salmonids (90 Oncorhynchus mykiss, 48 Oncorhynchus kisutch, and 90 Salmo salar) from 8 intensive aquaculture centers in the south of Chile were examined for endohelminths parasites between December 2008 and May 2009. The body cavities of 2 O. mykiss were infected by Diphyllobothrium sp. plerocercoids (prevalence: 6.7%, mean intensity: 1.0, mean abundance: 0.07) from the Lake Tarahuin hatchery on the south of Chiloé Island. Also, tetraphyllidean plerocercoids (prevalence: 3.3%, mean intensity: 1, mean abundance: 0.03) and fourth-stage larvae of Hysterothylacium aduncum (prevalenc

[Diagnostic of intestinal parasitosis by coproantigen detection].

Intestinal parasites are highly prevalent in tropical areas and developing countries, but are also common in industrialised countries as well. Traditionally, their diagnosis has been made by microscopic examinations of the faeces of the patient. These have been shown to have poor sensitivity, require serial samples, are very time-consuming and require a specialised technique. In the last few years, advances in the molecular biology of these parasites and research into the specific immune response of the patient, has made it possible to develop more efficient detection systems that help the cli

[Contribution of palaeopathology to defining the pathocoenosis of infectious diseases (Part two)].

In the second part of their review the authors focus on palaeopathological studies, performed in mummified tissues, with reference to infectious diseases. The analysis of samples obtained from both natural and artificial mummies may provide, in some favourable events, a more complete knowledge of these findings in comparison to information obtained from only comprehensive examination of the skeleton. The acquired data enable us to understand not only the diseases which afflicted mankind, but also dietary and hygiene conditions of ancient populations. We report knowledge acquired regarding some

Sequential imaging studies of cerebral gnathostomiasis with subdural hemorrhage as its complication.

Cerebral gnathostomiasis is a severe form of human infection caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum. We report sequential brain imaging in serologically proven cerebral gnathostomiasis. The clinical and radiographic correlation showed the probable route taken by the parasite during its migration through the central nervous system. We offer additional insight into pathogenesis of cerebral gnathostomiasis and its rare complication, subdural hemorrhage, a finding not previously reported in the literature.

Fish-borne parasitic zoonoses: status and issues.

The fish-borne parasitic zoonoses have been limited for the most part to populations living in low- and middle-income countries, but the geographical limits and populations at risk are expanding because of growing international markets, improved transportation systems, and demographic changes such as population movements. While many in developed countries will recognize meat-borne zoonoses such as trichinellosis and cysticercosis, far fewer are acquainted with the fish-borne parasitic zoonoses which are mostly helminthic diseases caused by trematodes, cestodes and nematodes. Yet these zoonoses

Current status of soil-transmitted helminths in Vietnam.

This paper provides a review of surveys on soil-transmitted helminths that were done in Vietnam between 1990 and 2001. Prevalence estimates could be obtained for 29 of the 61 provinces. Extrapolating from this, it is estimated that 33.9 million people in Vietnam are infected with Ascaris (prevalence 44.4%), 17.6 million with Trichuris (prevalence 23.1%), and 21.8 million with hookworm (prevalence 28.6%). Prevalence of Ascaris and Trichuris showed a declining trend from the north to the south of the country. This is probably related to differences in climatic conditions. Hookworm prevalence is

Are intestinal helminths a risk factor for non-typhoidal Salmonella bacteraemia in adults in Africa who are seropositive for HIV? A case-control study.

In Africa, invasive, non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections are a common but life-threatening complication in adults who are seropositive for HIV. The high prevalence of human infection with intestinal helminths which penetrate the gut could explain the greater importance of NTS bacteraemia in Africa compared with that in industrialized countries. If helminth infection is a major risk factor for NTS it would provide a locally relevant, public-health target. Intestinal helminth carriage in 57 HIV-positive patients with NTS bacteraemia (the cases) was compared with that in 162 HIV-positive co

Eosinophil granule proteins in serum and urine of patients with helminth infections and atopic dermatitis.

Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) and eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EPX) are cytotoxic molecules involved in helminth infections and allergic reactions. Hitherto most clinical chemical studies have been concerned with the analysis of serum ECP in allergic diseases. The aim of this study was to examine whether serum as well as urine levels of these proteins are useful clinical chemical parameters in helminthiases and allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis. Comparing these diseases under the same methodological conditions, levels of ECP and EPX were generally higher in helminthiases than i

Recognition of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae antigens by sera from human infected with this parasite and its potential use in diagnosis.

Human antibody response to total soluble extract of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae (TSE) was analyzed by Western blot. The most frequently recognized antigens had molecular weights of 96, 67, 63, 60, 55 and 47 kDa. An antigenic fraction containing two peptides with M.W. of 43, 47 kDa from the parasite (p43, 47 Ts L1) was isolated by elution from polyacrylamide gel slabs. It was used as antigen in an ELISA test and compared to that of TSE. Serum samples from 51 symptomatic trichinellosis patients--43 with high antibody levels to TSE, 5 of them with positive biopsy and 8 with low levels of t

Environmental sanitation infection and nutritional status of infants in rural St. Lucia, West Indies.

About 75 babies in each of three valleys were followed up for two years. The valleys had different levels of water supplies and latrine facilities, whereas socio-economic conditions and feeding patterns were similar. Results show that the prevalence of diarrhoea and intestinal helminths reduced as sanitation improved. Ascaris and Trichuris infections dropped 30 and 50% respectively after water supplies and latrines were installed. The growth of the children was significantly better in the improved areas. The possibility of malnutrition being secondary to illness, rather than primary, is includ

[Aetiology and therapy of Mooren's ulcer (author's transl)].

A report is given of 34 cases of Ulcus rodens of the eye (Mooren), which were examined and treaded during a period of five years in Togo, West Africa. The cases were divided into two groups according to the development of the disease. In fourteen cases the progress of the disease was arrested by local treatment (described individually for each eye), and by simultaneous treatment of the Helminthosis (Ascaris lumbricoides and Ankylostoma duodenale), from which the patients were also suffering. It seems likely that Ulcus rodens is caused by an antigen-antibody reaction to Helminth toxins.
