Transcriptomic and proteomic host response to Aspergillus fumigatus conidia in an air-liquid interface model of human bronchial epithelium.

Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) is a wide-spread fungus that is a potent allergen in hypersensitive individuals but also an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients. It reproduces asexually by releasing airborne conidiospores (conidia). Upon inhalation, fungal conidia are capable of reaching the airway epithelial cells (AECs) in bronchial and alveolar tissues. Previous studies have predominantly used submerged monolayer cultures for studying this host-pathogen interaction; however, these cultures do not recapitulate the mucocililary differentiation phenotype of the in vivo epi

Expression and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases in the optic nerve head in a rat model of ocular hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness manifesting as an age-related, progressive optic neuropathy with associated retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss. Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs: p42/44 MAPK, SAPK/JNK, p38 MAPK) are activated in various retinal disease models and likely contribute to the mechanisms of RGC death. Although MAPKs play roles in the development of retinal pathology, their action in the optic nerve head (ONH), where the initial insult to RGC axons likely resides in glaucoma, remains unexplored. METHODS: An experimental paradigm representing gl

[En bloc holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP EN BLOC): our experience].

INTRODUCTION: Some authors consider HoLEP a new gold standard for the surgical management of prostatic hyperplasia. The increasing utilization of holmium enucleation has led to the development of various modifications of this treatment modality, including the so-called enucleation as a single piece (HoLEP en bloc), which reduces the operative time and, according to some authors, facilitates acquiring new surgical technique by surgical trainees. AIM: To compare the effectiveness and safety of the traditional HoLEP and HoLEP en bloc. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 227 BPH patients

A randomized trial comparing methyl aminolaevulinate photodynamic therapy with and without Er:YAG ablative fractional laser treatment in Asian patients with lower extremity Bowen disease: results from a 12-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Methyl aminolaevulinate photodynamic therapy (MAL-PDT) is an effective treatment for Bowen disease (BD) of the lower extremities. Er:YAG (erbium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet) ablative fractional laser (AFL) treatment removes the stratum corneum to increase MAL uptake and may improve efficacy. However, no studies have directly compared the efficacy of MAL-PDT with and without Er:YAG AFL therapy in treating BD of the lower extremities in Asians. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy, recurrence rate, cosmetic outcomes and safety between Er:YAG AFL-assisted MAL-PDT (Er:YAG AFL-PDT) and sta
