A hybrid attention network for accurate breast tumor segmentation in ultrasound images.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) imaging is widely recognized as a non-invasive and cost-effective modality for the timely diagnosis of breast cancer. Despite its clinical importance, automatic tumor segmentation remains a highly challenging task because of speckle noise, varying lesion scale, and inherently indistinct boundaries between malignant and healthy tissue. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel hybrid attention-based segmentation framework, named HA-Net, tailored for BUS images. The proposed HA-Net uses a pre-trained DenseNet-121 backbone in the encoder to extract discriminative f

MACNet: A Multidimensional Attention-Based Convolutional Neural Network for Lower-Limb Motor Imagery Classification.

Decoding lower-limb motor imagery (MI) is highly important in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and rehabilitation engineering. However, it is challenging to classify lower-limb MI from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, because lower-limb motions (LLMs) including MI are excessively close to physiological representations in the human brain and generate low-quality EEG signals. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a multidimensional attention-based convolutional neural network (CNN), termed MACNet, which is specifically designed for lower-limb MI classification. MACNet integrates a te

Synthetic CT generation from CBCT based on structural constraint cycle-EEM-GAN.

Objective. Cone beam CT (CBCT) typically has severe image artifacts and inaccurate HU values, which limits its application in radiation medicines. Scholars have proposed the use of cycle consistent generative adversarial network (Cycle-GAN) to address these issues. However, the generation quality of Cycle-GAN needs to be improved. This issue is exacerbated by the inherent size discrepancies between pelvic CT scans from different patients, as well as varying slice positions within the same patient, which introduce a scaling problem during training.Approach. We introduced the Enhanced Edge and M

Intelligent surgical planning for automatic reconstruction of orbital blowout fracture using a prior adversarial generative network.

Orbital blowout fracture (OBF) is a disease that can result in herniation of orbital soft tissue, enophthalmos, and even severe visual dysfunction. Given the complex and diverse types of orbital wall fractures, reconstructing the orbital wall presents a significant challenge in OBF repair surgery. Accurate surgical planning is crucial in addressing this issue. However, there is currently a lack of efficient and precise surgical planning methods. Therefore, we propose an intelligent surgical planning method for automatic OBF reconstruction based on a prior adversarial generative network (GAN).

CoLe-CNN+: Context learning - Convolutional neural network for COVID-19-Ground-Glass-Opacities detection and segmentation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The most common tool for population-wide COVID-19 identification is the Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction test that detects the presence of the virus in the throat (or sputum) in swab samples. This test has a sensitivity between 59% and 71%. However, this test does not provide precise information regarding the extension of the pulmonary infection. Moreover, it has been proven that through the reading of a computed tomography (CT) scan, a clinician can provide a more complete perspective of the severity of the disease. Therefore, we propose a comprehensiv

A deep convolutional neural network architecture for interstitial lung disease pattern classification.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) refers to a group of various abnormal inflammations of lung tissues and early diagnosis of these disease patterns is crucial for the treatment. Yet it is difficult to make an accurate diagnosis due to the similarity among the clinical manifestations of these diseases. In order to assist the radiologists, computer-aided diagnosis systems have been developed. Besides, the potential of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is also expected to exert on the medical image analysis in recent years. In this paper, we design a new deep convolutional neural network (C

Automated glaucoma screening method based on image segmentation and feature extraction.

Glaucoma is a chronic disease that threatens eye health and can cause permanent blindness. Since there is no cure for glaucoma, early screening and detection are crucial for the prevention of glaucoma. Therefore, a novel method for automatic glaucoma screening that combines clinical measurement features with image-based features is proposed in this paper. To accurately extract clinical measurement features, an improved UNet++ neural network is proposed to segment the optic disc and optic cup based on region of interest (ROI) simultaneously. Some important clinical measurement features, such as

Processing of Degraded Speech in Brain Disorders.

The speech we hear every day is typically "degraded" by competing sounds and the idiosyncratic vocal characteristics of individual speakers. While the comprehension of "degraded" speech is normally automatic, it depends on dynamic and adaptive processing across distributed neural networks. This presents the brain with an immense computational challenge, making degraded speech processing vulnerable to a range of brain disorders. Therefore, it is likely to be a sensitive marker of neural circuit dysfunction and an index of retained neural plasticity. Considering experimental methods for studying

Role of SPARC--matricellular protein in pathophysiology and tissue injury healing. Implications for gastritis and gastric ulcers.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are commonly used as computational models for the primate ventral stream, while deep spiking neural networks (SNNs) incorporated with both the temporal and spatial spiking information still lack investigation. We compared performances of SNN and CNN in prediction of visual responses to the naturalistic stimuli in area V4, inferior temporal (IT), and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). The accuracies based on SNN were significantly higher than that of CNN in prediction of temporal-dynamic trajectory and averaged firing rate of visual response in V4 and IT. The

Bayesian distributional models of executive functioning.

This study uses controlled simulations with known ground-truth parameters to evaluate how distributional latent variable models (DLVM) and Bayesian distributional active learning (DALE) perform compared with conventional independent maximum likelihood estimation (IMLE). DLVM integrates observations across multiple executive function tasks and individuals, allowing parameter estimation even under sparse or incomplete data conditions. To establish known ground truth, we uniformly sample individual sessions from a neural network-learned latent space and map them to distributional cognitive perfor

Multi-modal deep learning for non-invasive blood glucose prediction from terahertz reflection spectra: A simulation study with four-layer skin modeling.

Non-invasive blood glucose monitoring using terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has attracted significant attention due to the sensitivity of THz radiation to water molecule dynamics and hydrogen bonding networks in biological tissues. However, the fundamental challenge lies in the weak glucose-induced spectral changes being obscured by inter-individual variations in skin morphology and hydration. In this study, we present a comprehensive simulation framework that combines a physically rigorous four-layer skin dielectric model with deep learning to investigate THz-based blood glucose prediction. SynSAM: a hybrid synchronous learning framework with knowledge retention for prostate zonal segmentation leveraging the segment anything model.

Accurate prostate zonal segmentation remains challenging due to domain shifts across institutions and the need for precise anatomical delineation. While transformer-based models like the Segment Anything Model (SAM) show promise, they struggle in medical domains, particularly with continual learning due to catastrophic forgetting. This study introduces SynESAM, a hybrid transformer-CNN segmentation framework that combines SAM’s image encoder with a CNN-based decoder. SynESAM employs synchronous learning strategies, specifically Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC) and variational EWC (vEWC), to

Predicting human gait kinematics and kinetics from a single inertial measurement unit using deep learning and synthetic datasets: A blinded assessment study.

A single inertial measurement unit (IMU) can be used with neural networks (NNs) to predict joint kinematics and kinetics. Recent studies, however, often employed virtual IMU data computed from marker-based systems to train NN models, without providing realistic performance assessments on real IMU data. To address this, we present a methodology for developing and blindly evaluating NNs predicting lower-limb joint angles and moments from a sacrum-worn IMU. NN architectures were trained on IMU data simulated from a public marker-based dataset (49 healthy adults), augmented using conditional gener
