Combined organic amendments reduce Cd accumulation in double-cropping rice by restructuring soil bacterial communities.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soils poses a serious threat to rice safety and human health. The combined application of milk vetch, rice straw, and sesbania biochar (MRFB) has shown promise in mitigating Cd pollution in paddy fields; however, the associated bacterial mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. Based on a long-term field experiment, this study systematically assessed the effects of MRFB on soil physicochemical properties, Cd bioavailability, and bacterial community structure, and their subsequent influence on Cd accumulation in a double-cropping rice system. The results

Ecological genomics of saprotrophy to biotrophy transitions in the genus Clitopilus (Fr. ex Rabenh.) P. Kumm. (Agaricales, Entolomataceae).

Transitions between saprotrophic and biotrophic lifestyles represent pivotal evolutionary events in fungal ecology; however, the genomic and physiological mechanisms underlying such shifts remain poorly understood. The agaric genus Clitopilus (Basidiomycota, Entolomataceae) offers a valuable model system, with most species being soil saprotrophs. Clitopilus cf. baronii Consiglio & Setti exhibits genomic signatures suggesting incipient biotrophic capacity. Here, we investigated the genomic and eco-physiological properties of seven strains representing five Clitopilus species to identify traits

Core-Shell Structured BPNS@Gel: A Smart-Responsive, Multimechanistic Nanotherapeutic for Dry Eye Disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent ocular surface disorder driven by a self-perpetuating cycle of oxidative stress and inflammation, for which current therapies face limitations in bioavailability, retention, and multimechanistic action. To address this, we developed a core-shell structured BPNS@Gel platform, integrating a functionalized black phosphorus nanosheet (f-BPNS) core with a thermoresponsive hydrogel shell. The f-BPNS core (3-5 nm thick) was surface-modified with thiol groups and hyaluronic acid for mucoadhesion and corneal targeting, retaining superior multienzyme-mimetic activiti

Evaluation of the nutritional value and active compounds of commercial and non-commercial oilseed meals.

Cold pressing is one of the most common methods of extracting oil from seeds, generating by-products in the form of meals that are often discarded as waste. Given the large quantities of these meals and the presence of valuable compounds, a thorough investigation of their nutritional value and potential applications is essential. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the residual oil, total phenol and flavonoid content, phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, as well as the ash, carbohydrate, protein, and mineral nutrient content of 15 commercial and non-commercial oilseed meals.

The role of plants in ironstone evolution: iron and aluminium cycling in the rhizosphere.

The Carajás plateaus in Brazil host endemic epilithic vegetation ("campo rupestre") on top of ironstone duricrusts, known as canga. This capping rock is primarily composed of iron(III) oxide minerals and forms a physically resistant horizon. Field observations reveal an intimate interaction between canga's surface and two native sedges (Rhynchospora barbata and Bulbostylis cangae). These observations suggest that certain plants contribute to the biogeochemical cycling of iron. Iron dissolution features at the root-rock interface were characterised using synchrotron-based techniques, Raman spec

A multi-step approach: Coupling of biodegradation and UV photocatalytic oxidation TiO2 for the treatment of naphthenic acid fraction compounds in oil sands process-affected water.

Bitumen extraction in Alberta's oil sands region uses large volumes of water, leading to an abundance of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). OSPW contains naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs) which have been found to contribute to OSPW toxicity. This study utilized a multistep treatment, coupling biological degradation with UV photocatalytic oxidation, and nutrient addition to boost the native microbial community's degradation capacity. OSPW initially contained 40-42 mg/L NAFCs with a toxicity of 3.8-3.9 TU. Initial biodegradation (Step 1) was used to remove the easily biodegradable

CaAl-Layered Double Hydroxides-Modified Biochar Composites Mitigate the Toxic Effects of Cu and Pb in Soil on Pea Seedlings.

Compound contamination of soil with heavy metals copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) triggered by mining development has become a serious problem. To solve this problem, in this paper, corncob kernel, which is widely available and inexpensive, was used as the raw material of biochar and modified by loading CaAl-layered double hydroxides to synthesize biochar-loaded CaAl-layered double hydroxide composites (CaAl-LDH/BC). After soil remediation experiments, either BC or CaAl-LDH/BC can increase soil pH, and the available phosphorus content and available potassium content in soil. Compared with BC, CaAl-LD

Dietary Micronutrient Intake and the Prevalence of Metabolic Conditions among Children from the United States-Affiliated Pacific Region in the Children's Healthy Living Program.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional intake during childhood can shape health and well-being throughout life. Although excess macronutrient intake is considered the main driver of obesity development, micronutrients, i.e., minerals and vitamins, can potentiate or ameliorate pathological processes of adiposity. Hence, the micronutrient intake relationship to childhood obesity can guide precision approaches to nutritional needs, considering the dietary habits of a population. Childhood obesity is a health disparity throughout the United States-Affiliated Pacific (USAP) region. OBJECTIVES: The study examined
