Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) remains a poorly understood chronic pain disorder. Little data has been published assessing the epidemiology of CRPS (and reflex sympathetic dystrophy, RSD). The stabilizing effect of external support (taping and nine different ankle braces) was tested in a total of 220 functionally unstable ankles. A standard surface EMG controlled stress Roentgen test protocol was used, measuring talar tilt (TT) without support and with tape bandage or brace. Different levels of TT restraining by external support could be identified. Tape bandage and two braces had a highly significant influence on the talar tilt. The mean TT without support was decreased by using from 13.4 degrees to 4.9 degrees, by using one brace to 4.8 degrees and by using another brace to 5.

Both sonography and magnetic resonance imaging were performed in 57 patients with clinically suspected strain injury in lower extremity muscles. Sonography demonstrated normal findings in nine patients (16%), hyperechoic infiltration in 31 patients (54%), mass in nine patients (16%), and compound lesions of infiltration and mass in eight patients (14%). Back pain in the young athlete is a common finding. There are many different problems that can cause back pain in active children. It is important for the treating physician to obtain a thorough history and physical examination to help in establishing the underlying cause for the discomfort. Appropriate imaging can be determined by these findings and further help to define the pathology. Depending upon the specific pathology, appropriate treatment may help the patient to safely return to the activities that they enjoy.

This report presents a case of leg pain in a recreational athlete that was caused by a stenotic lesion of an endartery branch of the popliteal artery. Isolated areas of arterial stenosis are rarely reported in the sports medicine literature as the primary cause of leg pain. This may be due in part to the difficulty of obtaining the diagnosis. This study includes a review of the relevant anatomic, pathophysiologic, diagnostic, and therapeutic considerations and concludes with a discussion of the potentially underrecognized significance of arterial stenosis in the sports population.

Ankle dislocation without fracture is an extremely rare injury. The results of treatment are reported for three patients who had a posteromedial open dislocation, a lateral open dislocation, and a posterior closed dislocation of the ankle.
