BACKGROUND: The mechanism underlying tinnitus remains unclear, and when it coexists with vestibular schwannoma (VS), it can significantly diminish the quality of life for affected patients. This study aimed to determine the correlation between preoperative clinical characteristics of VS, postoperative changes in brain function, and tinnitus in patients with VS through a cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: We recorded and compared the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) before use of an endolymphatic mastoid shunt (EMS) and 1, 12, and 48 months after placement of the shunt.
METHODS: Air-conducted VEMPs were recorded in 28 patients affected by intractable Meniere's disease and treated with placement of an EMS.
RESULTS: One month and 12 months after the surgery, VEMPs were not detectable in the operated ear in 100% and 86% of the patients, respectively. Forty-eight months after the surgery, they were elicited in 79% of the patients.

This review of the literature on Alport syndrome (AS) places emphasis on genetic and clinical issues related to the sensorineural hearing loss in type III and type IV X-linked AS. The review covers prevalence, medical issues, genetic issues, audiologic findings, vestibular findings, the pathophysiology of hearing loss in type III AS, age- and phenotype-specific normative data and concludes with a discussion regarding future auditory-genetic research with AS.

During the last three years at the ENT Department of the University of Lübeck, patients with Ménière's disease have been fitted with an endaural catheter. A portable infusion pump with a fluid reservoir then supplied the ear being treated with a continuous gentamicin solution. On average, 3 ml of a 0.3% solution was given each day of treatment. We report a case of infarction of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) with peripheral facial palsy following vertigo and acute sensorineural hearing loss.
