We have studied malign tumours of major and minor salivary glands, analyzing the possible etiologic factors in relation to their glandular histological structure (specially in parotid). Celiac disease is the result of an immune response that only occurs in genetically predisposed individuals. Both innate and adquired immune responses have a role. In the acquired cellular immune response, the most important in the disease, T lymphocytes are activated by gliadin peptides presented by specific HLA-DQ molecules. However, even in HLA-DQ2 homozygotes, only 5% get the disease, whereas the concordance between identical twins is 80%. Studying candidate genes in more than 500 patients and controls we have found other susceptibility genes for the disease.

The epidermic desmosomes are formed in their molecular structure by transmembrane components from the cytoplasmic plaque. These are linked up to the tonofilaments of keratin forming a continuous proteinic web which is crucial to keep the tissue integrity. The functional and structural deterioration of the desmosomes produces in human clinic a series of very typical skin diseases, the most frecuent of which is the penghigus. In them, some molecular parts of the desmosomes become strange and antigenic and trigger to an autoimmune reaction which produces a blistering disease of serious prognosis.
