Panic disorder patients displayed significantly higher panic-agoraphobia, anxiety, depression, and pain scores than non-panic disorder patients (P < 0.01). OBJECTIVE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by high rates of comorbidity with other mental disorders, including anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Beyond a mere concept of comorbidity, recent literature is speculating the existence of a neurodevelopmental nature of such mental disorders. The aim of the study is to investigate the distribution of social-phobic, obsessive-compulsive and panic-agoraphobic traits within a sample of individuals with ASD, social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic disorder (PD).
METHODS: 40 particip

The aims of this paper are to analyze differences in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics among the various anxiety disorders treated in a Psychology Clinic, and the results of treatment in each anxiety disorder. Data from 282 patients of University Psychology Clinic at the Complutense University of Madrid, who had at least one diagnosis of anxiety according to DMS-IV-TR criteria, were analyzed. The most frequent anxiety disorders were nonspecific anxiety disorder (19.1%) and social phobia (18.8%). Significant differences were observed according to sex (in all disorders, the percentag

BACKGROUND: The self-report version of the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS-SR) has been developed recently and has demonstrated good psychometric properties. However, there is no cross-cultural evaluation of this scale. The purpose of this study was to confirm the reliability and validity of the PDSS-SR in Korean subjects.
METHODS: We studied 148 patients with principal DSM-IV diagnoses of panic disorder who underwent formal structured diagnostic assessment and the PDSS interview. The participants completed self-report measures including the PDSS-SR, Anxiety Sensitivity Index-Revised, Alb

OBJECTIVE: Childhood anxiety often precedes the onset of anorexia nervosa (AN) and may mark a liability to the emergence of an eating disorder for some women. This study investigates the prevalence of overanxious disorder (OAD) among women with AN and explores how OAD impacts AN symptoms and personality traits.
METHOD: Participants were 637 women with AN who completed an eating disorders history, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, and assessments for childhood anxiety, eating disorder attitudes, and associated personality traits.
RESULTS: Of 249 women (39.1%) repo

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder with an estimated heritability of up to 48%. Pharmacological and genetic studies suggest that genes coding for proteins involved in the catecholaminergic system might be relevant for the pathogenesis of the disease. In the present study, we genotyped a single nucleotide polymorphism (472G/A=V158M) in the coding region of the catechol-O-methyl-transferase (COMT) gene in 115 patients with panic disorder and age- and sex-matched controls. Association analysis revealed a significant excess of the more active COMT allele (472G=V158) in patients with panic disor

OBJECTIVE: Quality of life in a treatment-seeking cohort of patients with social anxiety disorder was compared with that of patients with panic disorder who were matched for age, comorbid illnesses, and gender and with population-based norms.
METHODS: The study participants were 33 patients with social anxiety disorder and 33 patients with panic disorder who had participated in clinical trials and who had completed the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form-36 (SF-36) as part of a baseline evaluation. The patients did not have significant comorbid psychiatric disorders. Paired t tests were used to

Married couples with a female agoraphobic spouse (n = 22) were compared with demographically similar community control couples (n = 21) on self-report and observational measures of marital interaction. Consistent with hypotheses, husbands of agoraphobic women were more critical of their wives than were control husbands, and clinical couples were less likely to engage in positive problem solution than control couples. Contrary to hypothesis, clinical husbands were not less supportive than control husbands. Where general measures of marital distress were concerned, clinical couples, relative to

The relationship between and the inter-rater reliability of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) for anxiety and depressive disorders were explored. The CIDI and the SCAN were administered by trained interviewers in counterbalanced order. A subsample of interviews was observed to determine the inter-rater reliability of the instruments. Subjects were 101 patients accepted for treatment at an Anxiety Disorders Clinic; 29 of the 101 patients participated in the inter-rater reliability study. Concordance betwee

Fifty-five patients with moderate to sever panic disorder were treated for 9 weeks with alprazolam or imipramine and were then, except for one patient who had committed suicide, re-examined after on average 3 years of treatment. At follow-up most patients (74%) did not suffer from panic attacks at all. In the beginning of the study 87% exhibited phobic avoidance behaviour but after 3 years 68% no longer revealed phobic behaviour. At follow-up 28% of the patients were no longer having psychotropic drug treatment and 20% were completely free of overt psychopathology. No tolerance phenomena were

Although there is increasing evidence for a familial role in panic disorder, little research exists on the family interaction patterns and relational stressors that may contribute to this disorder. Using DSM-III-R criteria, 52 families were classified into Panic Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Nonclinical Control groups. A semi-structured interview and self-report measures were then used to examine family processes. MANOVA results were highly significant, suggesting that, compared to depressed and nonclinical control families, panic-disordered families had unresolved life-cycle issues

Recent theories of psychological disorders are beginning to break down the traditional dichotomy between mental and physical processes. The present paper reports on two cases of space phobia in which this is especially apparent. Neuropsychological assessment indicated subtle disturbance in visuospatial functioning. The emotional response to this dysfunction appeared, however, to be somewhat excessive given the subtlety of the deficit. This is seen as a psychological reaction to a neuropsychological dysfunction.

Patients with panic disorder (N = 11) and age- and sex-matched normal control subjects (N = 11) were challenged with human growth hormone-releasing factor (GH-RF) (1 microgram/kg i.v.) or placebo in random order. The control subjects had significantly increased plasma growth hormone (GH) levels after GH-RF infusion whereas panic disorder patients did not. At 15 and 30 minutes after GH-RF infusion, GH concentrations were significantly higher in the control subjects than in the patients. These findings with GH-RF extend findings from earlier reports that patients with panic disorder show blunted

Abnormalities in regulation of noradrenergic function have been proposed as part of the pathology of depressive and panic anxiety disorders. However, abnormalities in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function have largely been limited to patients with depressive disorders. Using the cortisol response to clonidine, an alpha 2-adrenergic receptor agonist, this study examined the relationship between the noradrenergic system and the HPA axis in 10 patients with major depression (4 unipolar, 6 bipolar), 10 patients with panic disorder, and 10 normal controls. Baseline cortisol was signifi

Anxious patients, and more specifically, patients experiencing panic attacks, are thought to have a significant biological component to their illness. This study looks at two promising biological markers associated with this patient population-mitral valve prolapse and lactate-induced panic. We present our findings, which further characterize clinical and biological aspects of these two markers.

Traditionally, it has been assumed that there is only one type of anxiety; recent pharmacologic evidence suggests that there may be several. The psychoanalytic concept of "neurotic" symptoms as depressurizing mechanisms is out of keeping with most evidence now available. Spontaneous or "free-floating" anxiety may be partly biologic and genetic in origin. Anxiety symptoms evoked by specific stimuli behave in part like conditioned responses. Where conditioning theory has failed to propose a plausible unconditioned stimulus for pathologic anxiety, biology, ethology, and psychoanalysis may have be
