A national multisectoral commission: Contours and Contributions to the Population Health Development.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) 2013-2030 emphasises that effective NCD prevention and control requires leadership, coordinated multisectoral and multistakeholder engagement across a broad range of sectors, and partnerships with relevant civil-society organisations and private-sector entities. This study identifies country specific policy instruments and levers, and thus, unfolds the context specific contributions of a national multisectoral commission to tackle the problems of NCDs. METHODS:

Transnational alcohol corporations in Nigeria as commercial determinants of health: Implications for policy.

Research on commercial determinants of health (CDoH) has burgeoned in the Global North. However, despite the heavy presence of harmful commodity industries in Africa, little scholarly attention has been paid to CDoH. Transnational alcohol corporations (TNACs) in Nigeria deploy well-articulated marketing strategies and practices that negatively impact health in their quest for profit maximisation, wealth extraction and influence. Nevertheless, their tactics and practices are largely unregulated and understudied. This commentary demonstrates how TNACs in Nigeria are a key pervasive and harmful C

'It's not just immoral!': The role of moral disengagement and incivility in dehumanising the transgressor of immoral behaviour.

People who engage in immoral behaviour are often dehumanised. However, they also tend to justify their actions to convince themselves or others that their misconduct is morally acceptable. In this paper, we examine whether moral disengagement mechanisms influence the extent to which a transgressor is perceived as fully human. Further, we assess whether this perception varies based on specific characteristics of the immoral behaviour, such as incivility. To answer these research questions, we conducted two studies with online participants from Spain. In Study 1, participants (N = 302) evaluated

Common Ancestry from Southern Italy: Two Families with Dilated Cardiomyopathy Share the Same Homozygous Loss-of-Function Variant in NRAP.

Background: Cardiomyopathies are a heterogeneous group of heart muscle disorders with diverse genetic origins. Biallelic loss-of-function (LoF) variants in the nebulin-related anchoring protein (NRAP) gene have been linked to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy, though only a few families have been described. NRAP, a member of the Nebulin family, plays a key role in cardiomyocyte development, structural integrity, and muscle function. Methods: We investigated two Italian siblings with DCM born to consanguineous parents from a small village in Campania

Reviving the Past, Moving on to the Present, and Planning for the Future of Craniofacial Malformations.

The malformed newborn with craniofacial anomalies was variously regarded in different civilizations. Some populations considered it a symbol of the presence of God, whereas others brutally eliminated it. Understanding of craniofacial malformations started in the 19th century, with the development of embryological, experimental studies. Management of congenital facial deformities was not mentioned in medical literature until the middle of the 14th century. Ambroise Paré (1510-1590), published the first image of a cleft lip closure in 1561. Priority for cleft palate suture is shared between the …

Mortality in firefighters: extended follow-up of a Danish cohort, 1970-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Firefighters face numerous occupational hazards that raise concerns regarding adverse health effects and mortality. Therefore, we conducted an updated evaluation of mortality in a cohort of Danish firefighters by adding 7 years of follow-up. METHODS: The updated cohort comprised 11,888 male Danish firefighters, and the assessment of mortality spanned from 1970 through 2021. Data on vital status, emigration and mortality was retrieved from the Danish Civil Registration System and the Danish Register of Causes of Death. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMRs) were calculated for the co

Increased lifelong burden of comorbidities without increased early mortality in hereditary hypophosphatemia: a Danish register study.

Hereditary hypophosphatemia (HH) is a rare diseases characterized by excessive renal phosphate wasting. Hereditary hypophosphatemia presents as rickets and osteomalacia in children, and osteomalacia in adults. Previous studies have suggested an increased burden of comorbidities and higher risk of early death in individuals with HH compared with controls. This study investigates the comorbidities in HH throughout life and their association with survival compared with controls. Possible HH cases were initially identified from the Danish National Patient Register (DNPR) using diagnostic codes for

Risk perception and mpox vaccine acceptability among people living with HIV in northern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of information regarding mpox risk perception and vaccine acceptance among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), especially in countries with a dual burden of HIV and mpox, such as Nigeria. METHODS: We used an explanatory mixed methods design and structured questionnaires administered to a clinic-based sample of people living with HIV (n=430), followed by in-depth interviews with a purposive subsample (n=20). Data were analysed using binary logistic regression and the framework approach. RESULTS: More than one-third (38.1% [n=164]) of the respon

Achievements and Obstacles in the Late Phase of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

BACKGROUND: The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), founded in 1988, has contributed to a drastic reduction in the number of cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) infection. Progress has stalled for years, however, even though the GPEI has become a very costly global health program. Poliomyelitis is caused by WPV types 1, 2, and 3, as well as by mutated vaccine viruses. METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selective literature search relating to challenges that currently face the GPEI, with an emphasis on the situation in Germany, e.g., the problem of maintaining the

Is South Africa ready for point-of-care, non-sputum tests for TB diagnosis? An assessment of end-user perceptions on a novel urine test and tongue swab for TB testing.

BACKGROUND: Sputum collection continues to limit TB testing, resulting in undiagnosed TB. Innovative interventions are needed to expand point-of-care TB diagnosis particularly in low-to-middle income countries (LMICs). Novel non-sputum sample types currently under development can increase TB testing, however there is limited knowledge on end-user perceptions on these tests. METHODS: Between March and June 2023, we conducted a mixed methods study to assess end-user insights on a tongue swab and urine test currently under development for TB diagnosis. To describe the sample types to respondents

Retrospective analysis of uterine involvement in low grade serous ovarian carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Low grade serous ovarian carcinoma (LGSOC) accounts for 2.5% of all ovarian carcinoma more affects younger women than high grade serous ovarian carcinoma. Hysterectomy is performed routinely for LGSOC treatment, but fertility sparring surgery (FSS) is feasible for some early stages. Currently, there is no study about uterine involvement in LGSOC. We evaluate uterine involvement in LGSOC patients and aim to identify pre-operative predictive factors. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of LGSOC patients treated between January 2000 and May 2022 in the Hospices Civils de Lyon.

Comparing diabetes prediction based on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: the ELSA-Brasil study.

We aimed to compare nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) definitions concerning diabetes prediction in a large sample of Brazilian adults. As a secondary objective, we compared associations between NAFLD/MASLD and diabetes across self-declared race/skin color groups. The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) is a prospective cohort study of Brazilian civil servants (35-74 years) enrolled from 2008 to 2010 and followed up from 2012-2014 and 2017-2019. We ascertained type 2 diabetes mellitus at baseline

Social strata and oral pathologies: A comparative study in two co-localized, temporally disjunct burial sites of ancient Egypt.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Oral pathologies in ancient human remains provide a unique glimpse into the lifestyles, health, and societal norms of past civilizations, including ancient Egypt. However, comprehensive paleo-odontological studies accounting for temporal and sociodemographic variations remain scarce. We address this gap by analyzing oral pathologies in the remains of 68 and 57 adult individuals, respectively, unearthed from two adjacent yet temporally and socioeconomically diverse burial sites, representing the XIth dynasty (2160-1985 BCE) and the XXVth-XXVIth dynasties (948-525 BCE), at Lu…

GADNN: a revolutionary hybrid deep learning neural network for age and sex determination utilizing cone beam computed tomography images of maxillary and frontal sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: The determination of identity factors such as age and sex has gained significance in both criminal and civil cases. Paranasal sinuses like frontal and maxillary sinuses, are resistant to trauma and can aid profiling. We developed a deep learning (DL) model optimized by an evolutionary algorithm (genetic algorithm/GA) to determine sex and age using paranasal sinus parameters based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: Two hundred and forty CBCT images (including 129 females and 111 males, aged 18-52) were included in this study. CBCT images were captured using the New

State of the literature discussing smoke-free policies globally: A narrative review.

Despite the success of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), most jurisdictions in the world do not have policies that create 100% smoke-free environments in indoor workplaces, indoor public places, public transport, or other public places. We conducted a narrative review of articles that discuss smoke-free policies and describe the state of the current literature. A search of peer-reviewed and gray literature, published between 1 January 2004 and 30 April 2022, was conducted using PubMed and EMBASE databases. We classified articles based on the location of the policy discussed (

Testing low-risk bioactive compounds on Halyomorpha halys: an improved pipeline of analyses to investigate their effects on the bacterial endosymbiont Candidatus Pantoea carbekii.

BACKGROUND: The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys has become an invasive insect pest of many crops. A promising control strategy to manage the proliferation of H. halys is based on the suppression of its obligate and vertically transmitted uncultivated symbiotic bacterium Candidatus Pantoea carbekii through surface-sterilization of H. halys eggs. Indeed, the application of antimicrobial formulations on the eggs of H. halys could cause mortality of endosymbiont and consequently of newly emerged nymphs. In this study, a microbial live/dead assay was applied directly on H. halys eggs t
