'Be active, eat right', evaluation of an overweight prevention protocol among 5-year-old children: design of a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in children has at least doubled in the past 25 years with a major impact on health. In 2005 a prevention protocol was developed applicable within Youth Health Care. This study aims to assess the effects of this protocol on prevalence of overweight and health behaviour among children. METHODS AND DESIGN: A cluster randomised controlled trial is conducted among 5-year-old children included by 44 Youth Health Care teams randomised within 9 Municipal Health Services. The teams are randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. The te

Endometritis treatment with a PGF2alpha analog does not improve reproductive performance in a large dairy herd in Argentina.

In Argentina, most dairy cows with endometritis are treated with prostaglandin (PGF(2alpha) or its analogs) and insemination is withheld until there are no signs of endometritis. The objective of the present study was to evaluate if this method of managing endometritis enhances reproductive performance. Three experiments were conducted over 4 years in a large farm in the west of Buenos Aires province. In Experiment 1, half of the cows diagnosed with endometritis (>1.5-fold difference in diameter of uterine horns, as determined by rectal palpation) received standard endometritis management (tre

Randomised controlled trial of anterior-chamber intraocular lenses.

BACKGROUND: There are an estimated 16 million people blind in both eyes with cataracts. Most live in rural areas of developing countries where surgical resources are scarce. There is no consensus on the most appropriate type of intraocular lens in situations where high-volume low-cost surgery is required. This study was undertaken to evaluate the safety of multiflex open-loop anterior-chamber lenses (ACIOLs). METHODS: 2000 people attending Lahan Eye Hospital, southern Nepal, with bilateral cataracts reducing vision to 6/36 or less were randomly allocated to receive standard surgery--intracaps

Additive effect of continuous low-dose ofloxacin on erythromycin therapy for sinobronchial syndrome.

It has been established that long-term low-dose erythromycin therapy (EM therapy) is very effective for sinobronchial syndrome, a common condition in Japan characterized by chronic upper and lower airway inflammation. The effect does not result from its bacteriocidal activity and the detailed mechanisms are not known. It takes 3-6 months for EM therapy to improve the symptoms. This study was designed to evaluate the additive effect of continuous low dosage or intermittent usual dosage of ofloxacin (OFLX) on EM therapy in patients with sinobronchial syndrome. Patients with sinobronchial syndrom

N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) is a structural analog of N-acetylglutamate and has multifunctional roles in animal production. However, few studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of NCG on protein digestive function and muscle growth in broiler chickens. This study investigated whether NCG could improve muscle growth via protein digestive ability and amino acid metabolism in broiler chickens. A total of 144 one-day-old male broiler chickens were randomly allocated to four treatments with six replicates of 6 broiler chickens each. The treatments were a basal diet and a basal diet with N

Timely hospital discharge in TAVI patients: towards a patient-centered care pathway.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has evolved into the dominant therapeutic option for severe aortic stenosis, with procedural refinements and expanding indications increasingly supporting shorter post-procedural monitoring and discharge. International evidence from randomized trials, multi-center registries, and consensus guidelines demonstrates that reduced length of stay (LOS), including next-day or early discharge, can be safely achieved in selected patients when supported by standardized workflows, careful patient selection, and structured outpatient monitoring. Multidimensional effects of virtual reality on motor dysfunction in patients who had a stroke: study protocol for a prospective, randomised, controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Poststroke motor dysfunction places a heavy burden on individuals and society. Virtual reality (VR) offers enhanced motor skill transfer and active rehabilitation by overcoming the scenario-specific constraints of conventional therapies. Validating the efficacy of VR rehabilitation could lead to scalable and cost-effective solutions, potentially enabling home-based rehabilitation. However, the widespread clinical application remains constrained by the lack of rehabilitation-specific VR and multidimensional quantitative assessments. The aim of this study was to investigate the mul
