Dietary enrichment of Tyrophagus putrescentiae improves Amblyseius swirskii rearing efficiency: linking prey biochemistry to predator demography.

Optimizing nutrient transfer across trophic levels has become an important approach to enhance the biological efficiency and sustainability of predator-prey rearing systems supporting augmentative biological control. This study examined how dietary enrichment of the factitious prey Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) influences its biochemical composition and subsequent effects on the demographic performance of the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot; one of the most widely used biocontrol agents in protected crops. Eight dry diets were tested, including a basal mixture (Diet 1: w

Combining pathway engineering and precursor enrichment to build a multi-trait soybean platform for aquaculture feed applications.

Oilseed crops offer a scalable aquaculture feed production platform for generating oils with long-chain ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and high-value antioxidants, but metabolic flux through heterologous pathways is often constrained by precursor availability and endogenous regulatory limits. Here we engineered soybean seeds to co-produce eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), astaxanthin, and tocotrienols by introducing nine microbial and plant enzymes spanning fatty acid desaturation/elongation, ketocarotenoid synthesis, and vitamin E tocochromanol biosynthesis. Transgenic events accumulated EPA up t

Phytohormone-Mediated Regulation of Plant Cold Stress Tolerance: Signaling, Hormonal Crosstalk, and Translational Perspectives.

Cold stress (CS) represents a major environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth, development, and productivity. To cope with low-temperature conditions, plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms for CS perception and response, mediated through complex cellular signaling networks and physiological processes. Central to these adaptive responses are phytohormones, which function either independently or through synergistic and antagonistic interactions to fine-tune CS tolerance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the roles of major classical phytohormones and signaling me

Phytotoxicity mechanism of rubratoxin B from the soil-derived fungus, Talaromyces purpureogenus XJ14C02.

BACKGROUND: Chemical herbicides are essential for crop productivity, but increasing resistance demands new modes of action. Microbial metabolites offer a promising source of novel phytotoxins. Here, we elucidate the herbicidal mechanism of rubratoxin B (RB), a mycotoxin produced by Talaromyces purpureogenus XJ14C02 strain isolated from soil in Xinjiang, China. RESULTS: RB exhibited potent root growth inhibition against Echinochloa crus-galli, Conyza canadensis, and Arabidopsis thaliana (IC₅₀ = 14.70, 9.45, and 0.21 μg mL-1, respectively). Integrated multi-omics profiling identified 2373 diffe

Integrating multi-omics reveals the mechanisms of elevated [CO2] enhances salt tolerance of tobacco plants with a photosynthetic regulatory network.

Abiotic stresses often occur concurrently with global changes, especially the combination of salt stress and elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) is a common phenomenon in salt-affected soils throughout the world. The synergistic regulatory mechanisms of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants in response to combined salt stress and elevated [CO2] are still poorly understood. This study aimed to reveal the potential mechanisms of elevated [CO2] modulating leaf photosynthesis of tobacco plants subjected to salt stress by integrating physiological, transcriptional, and metabolomics analyses. USP Gene Network Modulation and Osmoprotection Define Salt Resilience in Chenopodium quinoa Genotypes.

Soil salinity poses a severe threat to global food security, making the halophytic crop Chenopodium quinoa a vital model for sustainable agriculture. While quinoa is known for its extreme salt tolerance, the molecular mechanisms integrating stress perception with metabolic adaptation remain poorly defined. This study employs a multi-level approach, integrating morphological, physiological, biochemical, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses, to dissect the complex adaptation strategies across eight advanced quinoa lines. Morphological and physiological screening identified three distinct sur

Beneath the Drought: Rhizosphere Processes Shape Genotype-Specific Sorghum Responses to Drought-Induced N Limitation.

Droughts increasingly threaten crop productivity in nutrient-depleted tropical soils. We investigated how water limitation influences rhizomicrobial traits (microbial biomass and functional community composition, enzyme activities) and nitrogen (N) uptake in three sorghum genotypes Makueni local (Mkl), Gadam (Gd), and IESH 22012 (IESH) under well-watered and drought conditions. Depth-specific (0-30 and 30-60 cm) 15N labelling traced N uptake at flowering and grain-filling. Drought reduced grain N content across all genotypes but shoot N only in IESH. Gd enhanced 15N recovery in grains via post

Functional characterization of CiCIPK8 and CiCIPK11 reveals their roles in osmotic stress via CBL-CIPK signaling in pecan (Carya illinoinensis).

Osmotic stress severely limits plant growth and agricultural productivity, primarily by disrupting cellular water balance. Although the CBL-CIPK signaling network is recognized as a central mediator of abiotic stress responses, the functions of CiCIPKs from pecan (Carya illinoinensis) in osmotic stress tolerance remain largely unclear. In this study, two osmotic stress-responsive genes, CiCIPK8 and CiCIPK11, were cloned and functionally characterized via heterologous expression in Arabidopsis. Under mannitol-induced osmotic stress, transgenic lines exhibited significantly enhanced seed germina

Effect of chitosan coating and storage time on the sensory and physicochemical quality of minimally processed "Hayward" kiwifruit.

Edible coatings represent a promising preservation technology with significant potential to protect food products from microbial contaminants, extend postharvest shelf life, and add value to crops such as kiwifruit. These coatings offer the advantage of direct application to the food surface by dipping, spraying, or brushing, thereby creating a modified atmosphere. Chitosan is an edible coating formulated from naturally derived biodegradable materials, characterized by high antimicrobial activity, biocompatibility, and low toxicity. However, the impact of chitosan on the sensory and physicoche

From environment to human: systematic assessment of heavy metal contamination and exposure in a typical karst agricultural area.

Karst agroecosystems are highly vulnerable to heavy metal contamination, yet integrated assessments linking environmental pollution to human exposure remain limited. This study investigated soils, surface water, and food crops in a karst agricultural town of Southwest China and used hair and nail biomonitoring to examine potential linkages between environmental contamination, food exposure, and human metal accumulation. Cultivated soils showed pronounced enrichment of Cd, Pb, and Zn, with Cd driving severe pollution (Pi > 10; Pn > 1), whereas surface water met Class I standards. Agricultural p

Nitric oxide: A key player in plant defense against biotic stress.

Nitric oxide (NO), a small yet highly reactive gaseous molecule, has emerged as a crucial signaling component in plant biology, mainly in mediating its defense responses against biotic stress. Apart from mammalian role of NO, it also actively involved in the broad physiological, biochemical, and immunological processes in plants. NO is synthesized through a set of multiple enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways, whereupon it rapidly accumulates upon pathogen recognition. NO is implicated in plant immunity by working in synergy with reactive oxygen species (ROS) in triggering the hypersensitive r

Hydrogen sulfide in coordination with sulfur mediates thermotolerance and improves photosynthetic responses through regulating membrane integrity, redox homeostasis and metabolite remodelling in rice.

Heat stress causes detrimental changes in the plant system, resulting in decreased photosynthesis, growth and crop productivity. In this study, we demonstrated that the combined application of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfur (S) under heat stress conditions improved photosynthetic functions and the overall plant performance in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The treatment facilitated lipid remodelling, thereby strengthening membrane integrity and function. Plants treated with H2S and S exhibited elevated levels of saturated acids, namely palmitic acid, steric acid, myristic acid, tridecanoic acid an

Foliar-applied honokiol exhibits basipetal translocation, offering a strategy for root disease management in precision agriculture systems.

INTRODUCTION: Root diseases in crops are increasingly becoming the most difficult to control due to the challenge of fungicides reaching infection sites. Honokiol, a natural fungicidal product derived from Magnolia officinalis, is primarily biosynthesized in leaves and subsequently translocated to roots to resist pathogen infection. METHODS: In this study, honokiol applied to the leaves of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua (PCH) could be transported downward to the roots and exhibited a control effect against root rot disease. RESULTS: Subsequent research showed that concentration, temperature, pH,

Formation of trifluoroacetic acid from common trifluoromethyl pesticides in agricultural soils.

The short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) has been recognized as a degradation product of only three pesticides, but many other trifluoromethyl pesticides (C-CF3 pesticides) may potentially produce TFA based on their molecular structure. We determined TFA formation from seven C-CF3 pesticides with high sales rates (trifluralin, fluazifop-P-butyl, fluazinam, tau-fluvalinate, diflufenican, fluopyram, and mefentrifluconazole) over 52 weeks in a laboratory experiment with three agricultural soils. TFA was formed from all seven pesticides, but TFA formation vari

Non-coding RNAs as central regulators of phytohormone signaling in plant abiotic stress responses.

Plants are continuously exposed to a wide range of abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, temperature extremes, nutrient deficiency, and heavy metal toxicity, which severely constrain growth and productivity. To cope with these challenges, plants have evolved sophisticated regulatory networks involving phytohormones and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biogenesis and functional roles of major ncRNA classes' microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs) and their dynamic interplay with phytohormonal signali

Persistent Epigenetic Reprogramming Is Associated With Contrasting Drought-Response Strategies in Citrus Scion-Rootstock Systems.

Recurrent drought limits the productivity of perennial crops such as citrus, whose tolerance to water deficit largely depends on scion-rootstock interactions. Although physiological responses to recurrent drought are well documented, the epigenetic states associated with these responses remain poorly understood, limiting the use of epigenetic variation to improve drought resilience. Here, we investigated whole-genome DNA methylation profiles and transcriptional responses in "Pera-D6" sweet orange (LP) grafted onto two rootstocks with contrasting physiological strategies for coping with water d
