BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease triggered by the infection of the periodontal sulcus by microbes. Together with the abundant eubacterial microbiota, at least two parasites have often been identified: the amoeba Entamoeba gingivalis and the flagellate Trichomonas tenax. The role of these protists in the pathophysiology of periodontal disease remains to be deciphered. A high diversity in their measured prevalence, mainly due to methodological concerns, prevents further analysis of the aetiological link between these parasites and periodontitis.
METHODS: To determine E. ging…

Analysis of the mechanisms underlying the inflammatory response in amoebiasis is important to understand the immunopathology of the disease. Mucosal associated effector and regulatory T cells may play a role in regulating the inflammatory immune response associated to Entamoeba histolytica infection in the colon. A subpopulation of regulatory T cells has recently been identified and is characterized by the expression of the chemokine receptor CCR9. In this report, we used CCR9 deficient (CCR9(-/-)) mice to investigate the role of the CCR9(+) T cells in a murine model of E. histolytica intestin…

Sulfur-containing amino acids (SAAs) are essential components in many biological processes and ubiquitously distributed to all organisms. Both biosynthetic and catabolic pathways of SAAs are heterogeneous among organisms and between developmental stages, and regulated by the environmental changes. Limited lineage of organisms ranging from archaea to plants, but not human, possess a unique enzyme methionine gamma-lyase (MGL, EC 4.4.1.11) to directly degrade SAA to alpha-keto acids, ammonia, and volatile thiols. The reaction mechanisms and the physiological roles of this enzyme are partially dem

On the basis of an analysis of the contamination with intestinal protozoa in 373 Moscow children and comparison of the data of a randomized protozoological study of matched groups of 543 children from three towns of the Russian Federation in the past 15 years, the authors revealed profound changes in the pattern of intestinal parasitocenosis in the examinees: preponderance of B. hominis recently reclassified as a protozoan in all groups of examinees; a reduction in the detectable protozoan types up to a single type both among parasitic amoebas (E. coli) and flagellates (L. intestinalis). A total of 300 children were selected. A total of 180 apparently healthy children were selected. Each child was given a numerical number and subjected to a medical questionnaire. The rate of infection by the enteric protozoa detected by the four techniques revealed that G. lamblia reached 11.0% by concentration-sedimentation method, 10.3% by Sheather's concentration method and 7.0% (cysts) and 1.7% (vegetative) by direct wet smear. E. histolytica was 3.3% & 3.7% by the two concentration methods respectively. By direct wet smear 2.3% (cysts) and 0.7% (vegetative) were detected. E. coli was 7.3%

Amebic hepatic abscess is a tropical disease with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. A retrospective case review was performed on 39 hospitalized patients in Thailand with the diagnosis of amebic liver abscess. A total of 23 men (59%) and 16 women (41%), with a mean age of 44.56 +/- 21.81 years (range, 10 to 88 years), were involved in the study. The average duration of present illness was 7.33 +/- 0.83 days. Abscesses were discovered in the right lobe in 29 patients (74.4%), in the left lobe in 3 patients (7.7%), and in both lobes in 7 patients (17.9%). Thirty patients had single absc

A double antibody sandwich ELISA technique, using a chromatography purified antisera against E. histolytica, G. lamblia and Cryptosporidium antigens, was applied to detect copro-antigens of the corrosponding parasites in 90 patients. All positive cases were diagnosed by parasitological examination and proved to have the infection solely. Beside the 90 positive cases, 40 age-matched controls were included in the study, of which 20 individuals were infected with other parasites but not Cryptosporidium, E. histolytica or G. lamblia (acted as an infected control group) and the other 20 individuals

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection and amebiasis are waterborne diseases that are endemic in India. However, their co-occurrence has never been described. We report a patient who presented with fever, jaundice and tender hepatomegaly and on investigation was found to have coexisting acute hepatitis E and amebic liver abscess. Incidentally, he was also an HBsAg carrier.

Antiamebic antibody titers, were investigated in the feces and sera of 30 adults patients with intestinal amoebiasis, during the first two weeks of disease. Also, 29 control samples of healthy adult subjects were studied. The objective of this study was to determine if the local or systemic IgG, IgM or IgA levels were modified during the early stages of acute intestinal amoebiasis, for this purpose ELISA technique was use. Anti E. histolytica antibody titers in fecal samples of patients were not statistically different from titers detected in control samples, however in both groups IgA and IgM

Most parasitic intestinal infestations in humans are sub-clinical and, therefore, they are rarely diagnosed. A number of general, non-specific symptoms of parasitic invasions are often attributed to other diseases. A parasitological examination of feces performed as part of this study confirmed the presence of intestinal parasites in 21.6% of samples. Among the patients who reported 6 different symptoms, the percentage of parasite-positive samples reached 80%. The obtained results suggest that coproscopic tests may establish the diagnosis in unclear cases, particularly in children. Many parasi

During a mission in ex-Yugoslavia between 2001 and 2004, three French soldiers were sent home because of right pneumopathy, right pleurisy after appendicectomy, haemoptysis and liver haematoma, respectively. They previously were stationed in Africa and/or South America. The initial diagnosis was quickly modified: pleuropulmonary manifestations of amoebic hepatic abscess in two cases, and pleuropulmonary amoebiasis in the last case. The outcome was favourable with standard anti-amoebic treatment. The reports illustrate the possibility of hepatic amoebiasis with local pleuropulmonary manifestati
