Intrauterine growth retardation is the most reliable consequence of prenatal exposure to alcohol in both humans and animals. The decrease in fetal growth is caused by alcohol, not by congeners present in alcoholic beverages. The most likely hypothesis whereby alcohol decreases growth is via hypoxia, which interferes with cellular processes that require oxygen to function adequately, e.g., placental transport and protein synthesis. The third trimester of pregnancy is when alcohol exerts its greatest impact on fetal growth.

This article illustrates how women who abuse alcohol are at greater risk physically, emotionally and socially than their male counterparts. As a result, I recommend that clinical assessment and underwriting of women, who abuse or have the potential to abuse alcohol, change to reflect the increased risks which these women face.

Worldwide epidemiological studies on the effects of drinking during pregnancy on birth weight and prematurity were surveyed. Far more studies have reported no significant effects on birth weight than have reported significant decreases. Statistical analyses of the means from the prospective studies in this area indicated that both maternal smoking and alcohol consumption during gestation are associated with a significant decrease in birth weight. The effect of smoking is three times greater than the effect of alcohol. When the data were stratified by smoking status, maternal alcohol consumptio

Using in vivo microdialysis, ethanol-induced dopamine release in nucleus accumbens and striatum was examined in adult male and female Long-Evans rats exposed prenatally to ethanol and in controls. Following dialysis, ethanol intake was measured in an operant paradigm. Control rats showed increased dopamine release in nucleus accumbens and striatum in response to 0.5 g/kg ethanol, but not to 1.0 g/kg. Fetal ethanol-exposed rats showed no dopamine response at 0.5 g/kg. At 1.0 g/kg, fetal ethanol-exposed males showed increased dopamine release in both structures. Prenatally exposed females showed

Alcohol use exceeding 3 to 5 daily drinks is associated with a 30% to 50% risk of delivering a child with fetal alcohol effects (FAE). FAE could be prevented if women were counseled and if they decreased their drinking. Therefore, we need sensitive and specific markers to detect alcohol abuse during pregnancy. We investigated whether acetaldehyde-hemoglobin adducts (Hb-Ach) could be such a marker. Using an antiserum specific for acetaldehyde-generated epitopes in proteins, we measured the levels of Hb-Ach from the red cells of 19 women visiting the outpatient department of pregnant alcohol abu

A sample of 416 pregnant women were interviewed with emphasis on their use of alcohol, tobacco, and legally prescribed and illegal drugs before and after onset of pregnancy. The results indicate a significant reduction in alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking and the use of legally prescribed and illegal drugs in connection with the pregnancy. There was no correlation between socio-economic level and use of intoxicants. There was a correlation, however, between the use of intoxicants by the pregnant women and the use of such substances by other significant persons in their environment.

The effect of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy upon neonatal outcome was examined in 278 mother-infant dyads. Accounts of the mother's drug use as well as information about confounding factors were obtained by personal interviews on two occasions during pregnancy and again after delivery. The infants were examined by a standardized procedure for the presence of minor physical anomalies. Alcohol, in moderate amounts, was found to be unrelated to infant birth weight, birth length, or head circumference. Minor physical anomalies associated with fetal alcohol syndrome were no more com

INTRODUCTION: Ethanol is the most widely used drug worldwide. Its consumption has been increasing, and it is reported even during childbearing. Prenatal exposure to ethanol can lead to irreversible damages of the fetus. Knowledge about this risk could prevent these damages. There is no information about knowledge of the Italian students on this issue.
METHODS: Therefore the aim of this study was to describe the awareness of the Italian students attending the last year of secondary school about risk of gestational alcohol drinking for the delivering mother and the fetus. An online multiple-cho

We previously proposed an hypothesis that fetal alcohol syndrome is caused by an ethanol-induced inhibition of retinoic acid synthesis catalyzed by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Retinoic acid plays a critical role in central nervous system development which is severely disrupted in fetal alcohol syndrome. Retinoic acid is derived from retinol (vitamin A alcohol) via oxidation by retinol dehydrogenases that are members of the ADH family of isozymes, many of which also use ethanol as a substrate. We have shown that expression of the human ADH3 gene is induced by retinoic acid, thus further suppor

In a sample of over 12,000 African-American gravidas, we tested the hypothesis that the Federal Beverage Labeling Act of 1988 has decreased antenatal drinking. Results of time series analysis indicated a 7-month lag in the impact of the alcohol warning label. Controlling for population changes, antenatal drinking began to fall as of June 1990. However, this decrease was small in size and did not impact on the heaviest drinkers. Seasonal trends in drinking were also detected, with peaks around the end of the year and the summer.

To determine the usefulness of the assays of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein, human placental lactogen, and pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein in prenatal diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome, these proteins were followed in 35 problem drinkers (greater than 100 gm of ethanol weekly) and in 14 abstinent women throughout gestation. Thirteen women gave birth to infants with fetal alcohol syndrome, and these women had low levels of alpha-fetoprotein and pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein but levels of human placental lactogen were normal. Low alpha-fetoprotein correctly predicted fetal al

Changes in the drinking and smoking habits of pregnant women in Seattle, Washington, were examined in the 6-year period that followed the first American announcement of the fetal alcohol syndrome. Between 1974/1975 and 1980/1981, the number of women who reported any alcohol use around the time of the first prenatal visit dropped from 81% to 42%, whereas the number of smokers dropped from 25% to 22%; binge and heavier drinking also declined. However, among drinkers, there was no decrease in the proportion of women who reported heavier drinking. Although the proportion of women who drink during

The teratogenicity of alcohol has been demonstrated in humans through clinical studies, behavioral studies, and epidemiologic studies, and in animals through controlled laboratory experiments. In humans exposed to alcohol during gestation the effects can range from fetal alcohol syndrome in some offspring of chronic alcoholic women to reduced average birth weight in offspring of women reporting an average consumption of two to three drinks or more per day. The behavioral effects of such exposure may range from mental retardation in children with fetal alcohol syndrome to milder developmental a

AIM: There are various published studies showing that chronic alcoholics present cognitive deficit. In this conference we would like to review the most actual studies focusing on the neuropsychological alterations as consequences of the long and abusive alcohol intake. We also will analyse the involvement of these deficit in a complex task as driving.
DEVELOPMENT: The long and abusive alcohol intake produces an affectation of the central nervous system. We could observe its consequences both in short and long term. Attention and memory deficit and a slowness of information processing are very

BACKGROUND: Although the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have been studied extensively, there is relatively little information available on adult mental health functioning among exposed individuals. The current study compares the self-reported midlife mental health status of individuals who were prenatally exposed to alcohol and diagnosed in childhood with the effects of this exposure with that of unexposed individuals.
METHODS: Participants (N = 292) were recruited from two longitudinal cohorts in Atlanta and Seattle and asked to complete an Adult Health Questionnaire that surveye
