BACKGROUND: Although numerous risk factors were reported for the failure of digit replantation, there was a lack of studies investigating the association between replantation outcomes and fracture characteristics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the survival rate and functional outcomes of distal digit replantation based on the fracture patterns.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with Tamai zones I-II amputated digits who underwent replantation between 2018 and 2022. The fracture characteristics of the distal phalanx were compared to outcomes, including the survival rate

RATIONALE: Talar fracture accompanied with malleolar fracture is rare, and its management is complex. Ankle soft tissue is much thinner than other parts of the human body, and the shape of the ankle makes wounds difficult to close immediately after surgery, which may result in poor skin condition if the wound tension is too high. However, joint congruity and osteonecrosis are the main concerns of talar fracture.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old man presented at the emergency department following a motorcycle accident.
DIAGNOSES: Physical examination revealed swelling and tenderness of the lef

INTRODUCTION: In distal radial fractures in adults, factors affecting instability have been investigated in many studies in an effort to shorten the preoperative waiting period for the fractures requiring surgery. Numerous factors, aside from the alignment-related indices, have been searched to predict redisplacement. Unlike as in paediatric counterparts, the casting technique and casting-related indices have not been appropriately considered in adults. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the various previously investigated factors in addition to casting technique-related indi

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Calcaneal fractures are frequent injuries which may interfere with the patient's daily activities for a long time. They usually occur as the result of an axial load causing impaction of the talus into the calcaneus. They can also be bilateral. Falls and jumps from height are the most frequent causes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between August 2005 and December 2011, the method of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a calcaneal locking compression plate (LCP) was used to treat 98 patients with 114 calcaneal fractures. Of these, 16 were bilateral fractures found in

Background Tibial shaft fractures are common long-bone injuries associated with significant healthcare utilization. While winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding are recognized etiologies of lower-extremity trauma, literature regarding tibial shaft fractures following such activities remains scarce. The biomechanics associated with skiing and snowboarding may differ from other traumatic mechanisms of injury (MOIs), potentially resulting in distinct injury patterns that influence hospital outcomes and resource utilization. The purpose of this study was to characterize the epidemiology of

A review of the literature shows that 3% to 9% of all athletic injuries occur to the hand or wrist. Also, hand and wrist injuries are more common in pubescent and adolescent athletes than adults. Although knee and shoulder injuries are more common athletic injuries, an injury to the hand or wrist significantly can impair the athlete's ability to throw or catch a ball, or swing a bat or racquet. A college football player trains year round for just 11 or 12 hours of playing time. An athletic injury that occurs during the season can have profound consequences for the athlete's career and emotions

Ballistic femoral neck fractures are complex, high-energy injuries that require a management approach distinct from conventional blunt trauma. These current concepts review examines the evolving landscape of evaluation and treatment for these rare injuries based on contemporary literature. Initial management emphasizes the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) protocol, with a critical focus on identifying associated neurovascular and skeletal injuries, which are present in approximately one-third of cases. Diagnostic evaluation relies on plain radiography and thin-slice CT to delineate fracture

Fat emboli syndrome is a rare and potentially fatal condition that most commonly manifests after traumatic long-bone fractures. Cerebral fat emboli are one of the most feared complications leading to permanent neurologic injury, though methods for optimal monitoring in high-risk patients are lacking. We present a case of a 16-year-old female patient who presented to the emergency department following a motor vehicle collision with multiple injuries, including a comminuted femoral shaft and pelvic ring fracture, as well as an acute basilar artery occlusion due to fat embolism. Continuous transc

INTRODUCTION: Injuries involving the base of the middle phalanx with intra-articular extension and dorsal subluxation are challenging to manage, particularly when joint congruity and motion preservation are critical. This case report demonstrates the use of the Suzuki frame for dynamic external fixation in such a scenario and discusses broader clinical considerations.
CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old male sustained an intra-articular middle phalanx base fracture with dorsal subluxation of the left index finger during a cricket injury. Examination showed swelling, tenderness, and a flexion deformity

Complex distal femoral fractures in the young patient often occur as a result of high velocity trauma. Timely recognition and treatment is everything in such a situation, and it needs a robust staged management pathway to optimize the chance of limb preservation. We report a case of a motorcyclist admitted to the department of orthopedics at Chambery hospital, France, with a complex comminuted and open distal femoral fracture of the left leg, associated with a brachial plexus injury to the ipsilateral upper limb. On arrival to the emergency department, damage control stabilization and surgery

The prevalence of periprosthetic humeral fractures (PHF) is currently low and accounts for 0.6-2.4%. Due to an increase in the rate of primary implantations a quantitative increase of PHF is to be expected in the near future. The majority of PHF occur intraoperatively during implantation with an increased risk for cementless stems and when performing total arthroplasty. Additional risk factors are in particular female gender and the severity of comorbidities. In contrast, postoperative PHF mostly due to low-energy falls, have a prevalence between 0.6% and 0.9% and are significantly less common

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Locked intramedullary (IM) nails are the primary treatment modality for femoral shaft fractures. This study aimed to determine the risk of developing a femur nonunion as a function of nail-to-bone diameter mismatch.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was performed at a Level I trauma center. Adult patients with femoral shaft fractures (AO/OTA 32 classification) treated with IM nail fixation from 2016 to 2022 were identified from the institutional database. Cases required nonunion surgery. Controls were randomly selected in a 3:1 ratio and inclu

BACKGROUND: Endosteal augmentation enhances the stability of osteoporotic proximal humeral fracture fixation, but the optimal configuration is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical properties of different lengths of fibula with or without calcar screw in osteoporotic proximal humeral fracture.
METHODS: Three-part proximal humeral fractures with osteopenia were created on 20 pairs of fresh-frozen humeri specimens and allocated to four groups: (1) locking plate with a 6-cm fibular strut allograft, (2) locking plate with a 6-cm fibular strut allograft and additional

PURPOSE: Reduction and stable fixation of the quadrilateral plate are challenging primarily due to its location in the true pelvis, limited bone stock, juxta-articular nature, and its comminution. The current study aimed to investigate the quality of reduction and functional outcomes after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with infrapectineal buttress plating of the quadrilateral surface via an anterior intrapelvic approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of twenty-one patients with acetabular fractures involving quadrilateral plate operated at Ghurki Tru

BACKGROUND: Lateral locking plate (LLP) fixation has gained popularity for the treatment of proximal humeral fractures (PHFs); however, complications can occur due to loss of the medial cortical buttress from fracture comminution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We designed a novel intramedullary anatomical medial strut with allograft bone (IAMSAB) using MIMICS software to specifically fill the intramedullary canal of the proximal humeral bone. We used finite element analysis to evaluate the biomechanical characteristics of a LLP, LLP-intramedullary fixation system (IFS), LLP-anatomical medial locking

Locking plates might offer a biomechanical fixation advantage for distal fibula fractures with comminution or osteoporotic bone. In January 2011, our unit introduced a bone-specific locking plate for the distal fibula. The aim of the present study was to compare it against more conventional plating system implants for lateral malleolar fixation in terms of outcomes, crude costs, and complications. We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive cohort of patients with closed ankle fractures who presented within a 24-month period. The clinical and radiographic outcomes were compared among conventiona
