BACKGROUND: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the hands and wrists causing itching, dryness, cracking, and pain. It often affects people with atopic dermatitis (AD) and can interfere with work and daily life. Topical therapies may have limited utility from ineffectiveness, poor adherence, or poor tolerability. Here, we evaluate oral upadacitinib (UPA) as a potential therapeutic alternative for patients with AD and refractory CHE.
METHODS: This narrative review analyzed studies from PubMed, SCOPUS, and EMBASE evaluating CHE treatments. Eligible stu

BACKGROUND: Compositae dermatitis was originally described as airborne contact dermatitis. More recent studies have reported a wider clinical spectrum, but often in polysensitized patients.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical features of patients sensitized to Compositae only.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Consecutive Compositae-sensitive eczema patients, tested between 1990 and 2015, who, at the patch testing session diagnosing their Compositae allergy, were found to be sensitized only to the plant family, were included.
RESULTS: Altogether, 529 of 13 139 patients tested (4.0%) were sensitized to Comp

Mycosis fungoides (MF) represents a low-risk, cutaneous, non-Hodgkin, T-cell lymphoma with a wide spectrum of clinicopathological manifestations and therefore may mimic a number of other dermatoses. Sometimes the clinical diversity makes the diagnosis of MF, and especially its atypical forms, challenging. We report on an 18-year old male patient, who had been previously diagnosed with palmoplantar eczema. Clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular findings revealed an atypical case of MF.

A rare case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) due to peplomycin in a 48-year-old man is described. The patient had squamous cell carcinoma on the scalp and underwent preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy with peplomycin. On the fifth day of the chemotherapy, he developed a fever and multiple dusky violaceous erythematous areas and pustules on his trunk, thighs, and palms. Erosive erythema and erosions also developed on his soles, scrotum, and oral mucosa. A biopsy specimen taken from the eruption on the thigh revealed marked liquefaction degeneration of the basal layer of the epidermis. Labora

Irritant skin changes are a well known problem in nursing services. Especially geriatric nurses often complain of hand dermatitis, most likely induced by frequent washing and hand disinfections. In this cohort study, demographic data and skin changes from 521 nurse trainees were recorded. The data of geriatric nurse trainees (n = 149) were compared to that of other nurse trainees (n = 372), mostly of surgery, internal medicine, pediatric and obstetrics. Geriatric nurse trainees were significantly older and had noticeably severer irritant skin changes at the start of the training. Geriatric nur

8 cases of allergic contact dermatitis from hydrangea seen in Angers, France, during the last 15 years are reported and compared to other cases found in the literature. In this review, allergic contact dermatitis from hydrangeas appears to be an occupational dermatosis among nursery workers, presenting as an eczema involving the hands and especially the first 3 fingers, with chronic features of fissuring and scaling and with a chronic course. Differential diagnosis from irritant contact dermatitis may be difficult. Patch tests with the stem as well as the leaf of hydrangeas gave strong positiv

BACKGROUND: Latex is a common cause of contact urticaria in glove users. We recently found that 1.2% of patients attending a contact dermatitis investigation unit had delayed type hypersensitivity to latex as a cause of eczema.
OBJECTIVE: We reassessed the relevant contact allergens in users of natural rubber gloves with hand dermatitis. Particular emphasis was placed on allergens not included in the standard patch test series.
METHODS: Consecutive natural rubber glove users with hand dermatitis were investigated for the presence of contact dermatitis and urticaria.
RESULTS: One hundred sev

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a heterogenous disease with a morbidity and mortality that varies widely. Nonetheless, the future clinical course of an individual patient can be estimated based on the severity of skin and internal organ involvement within the first several years of the disease. Patients with limited cutaneous SSc (ISSc) have skin thickening below the elbows or knees and may have face and neck involvement. Patients with this subtype of SSc have Raynaud's phenomenon, digital ulcers, and esophageal dysfunction. Significant morbidity and mortality arises in those patients with ISSc wh

About 1000 patients were investigated at our clinic during 1991-1995 for occupational skin disease, and 5 had occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices. The patients were chefs, or kitchen, coffee room, and restaurant workers. All patients had hand (or finger) dermatitis. The causative spices were: garlic, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and clove. The same patients also had allergic patch test reactions to foods: tomato, lettuce and carrot. Paprika elicited a weak allergic patch test reaction in 2 patients. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices is relatively rare, but nee

Lowering the water-soluble chromium content of cement to < 2 ppm has been suggested to diminish the risk of allergic hand dermatitis caused by chromium among construction workers. The prevalence of chromium dermatitis was determined for a representative sample of 913 house construction workers and 707 concrete element prefabrication workers, with a questionnaire and clinical examination, before the use of cement with such a low content of water-soluble chromium was started on Finnish construction sites in 1987. The prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis caused by water-soluble chromium, dia

233 employees in hospital and dental care participated in an interview investigation on glove-related skin complaints. 37% (87/233) reported skin symptoms related to glove use. 2% (4/233) reported localized contact urticaria provoked by latex gloves, 10% (23/233) hand eczema and 24% (56/233) unclassifiable skin intolerance reactions from gloves. Another 2% (4/233) reported facial irritation from gloves. Glove-related skin symptoms were thus reported by more than 1/3 of the personnel and the reported glove-provoked contact urticaria constituted 5% (4/87) of the intolerance reactions.

Workers exposed to various irritants are widely advised to use moisturizers. To evaluate the efficacy of a moisturizer (Locobase), we studied 111 cleaners and kitchen workers during everyday exposure to water and detergents. All took part in a standardized interview. After randomization, 1/2 the workers (n = 56) used Locobase during a period of 2 weeks (period L), followed by a period without any emollient (period C), or vice versa (n = 55). Clinical assessment and measurements of the skin surface temperature, electrical capacitance and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were performed on the fi
