Enhanced puncture event detection for teleoperated needle insertion robotic system.

Lumbar puncture is a commonly used minimally invasive procedure in clinical practice that serves not only for disease diagnosis but also for therapeutic interventions and anesthesia during lower limb surgeries. However, the diagnostic, therapeutic, or anesthetic outcomes of current lumbar puncture procedures heavily rely on the physician's personal experience, resulting in prolonged procedure times and repeated exposure to harmful radiation for practitioners. In this paper, a novel teleoperated needle insertion robotic system for lumbar puncture surgery was proposed. This compact robotic syste

GCNPath: introspecting drug response prediction with pathway-guided graph convolution networks.

Drug response prediction (DRP), accounting for the diverse biological characteristics of cancer types that affect sensitivity or resistance to treatment, is crucial for anticancer drug selection and discovery. Although numerous deep learning models for DRP have been developed, it has not been investigated whether these models can maintain reliable predictive power when applied to omics datasets not used for training, which is crucial for real-world applications. Moreover, they have not been rigorously examined through systematic benchmark tests to investigate the relationships between model ar

Graph neural network surrogates to leverage mechanistic expert knowledge towards reliable and immediate pandemic response.

During the COVID-19 crisis, mechanistic models have guided evidence-based decision making. However, time-critical decisions in a dynamical environment limit the time available to gather supporting evidence. We address this bottleneck by developing a graph neural network (GNN) surrogate of an age-structured and spatially resolved mechanistic metapopulation simulation model. This combined approach complements classical modeling approaches which are mostly mechanistic and purely data-driven machine learning approaches which are often black box. Our design of experiments spans outbreak and persist

Explaining complex dynamical systems using conditional SHAP analysis with application to multi-variant epidemic dynamics.

Understanding and explaining the dynamics of complex systems is a critical yet challenging task. Such a challenge often arises from high dimensionality, nonlinearity, and randomness, which together make it difficult to study the key drivers influencing system behavior. One illustrative example is infectious disease dynamics. Outbreaks like COVID-19 have major public-health impacts, and timely vaccines and non-pharmaceutical interventions can lessen them. However, COVID-19, influenza, and other pathogens continually generate new strains, so standard low-dimensional compartmental models can be u

Optimising pandemic response through vaccination strategies using neural networks.

Epidemic risk assessment poses inherent challenges, with traditional approaches often failing to balance health outcomes and economic constraints. This paper presents a data-driven decision support tool that models epidemiological dynamics and optimises vaccination strategies to control disease spread while minimising economic losses. The proposed economic-epidemiological framework comprises three phases: modelling, optimising, and analysing. First, a stochastic SVEI3RD compartmental model with eight state variables captures epidemic dynamics, stratifying infections by severity to enable detai

VGM-UNet: A hybrid visual graph deformable mamba with fourier neural operator U-Net for medical image segmentation.

Deep learning methods have demonstrated remarkable advancements in medical image segmentation. However, achieving high accuracy remains a prominent challenge. In this paper, we present a new architecture, named VGM-UNet, that improves U-shaped segmentation models in performance and expressiveness by introducing the Structured State Space Duality algorithm to combine Graph Neural Networks, sparse attention, and Mamba-2, into U-Net and yield the best of these designs. This is accomplished through three primary modifications: we first adopt a novel approach, constructing a 2D State Space Model an

Towards intelligent railway monitoring: A novel hybrid deep learning architecture for railway obstacle detection.

Railways are among the most efficient modes of transportation, capable of moving large quantities of goods and passengers over long distances at relatively low cost. However, accidents frequently occur due to objects or individuals present on the tracks, as trains are unable to swerve and require long braking distances. While the localization of objects within the track bed is a well-explored topic, the reliable and high-performance classification of such obstacles across all relevant categories remains an unresolved challenge. This study proposes an innovative hybrid architecture that leverag

Coordinate aware implicit neural representation for UAV small object detection.

Small object detection in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery remains challenging due to low resolution, complex backgrounds, and limited pixel occupancy. Conventional CNN-based detectors rely on fixed receptive fields, which often fail to capture fine-grained spatial details and implicit geometric relationships. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a Coordinate-Aware Implicit Neural Representation Enhanced C2INR module that integrates coordinate-based representations into convolutional feature extraction. The Multi-Scale Coordinate Encoder (MSCE) constructs frequency-aware posi

Cross-modality fusion with local and global semantic feature correlation for weakly distinguishable object detection in aerial visible and infrared images.

To address the issue of missed detections caused by the similarity between weakly distinguishable objects and the background in both visible and infrared images, we utilize the correlation between local and global semantic features to find the difference clues between objects and the background. Specifically, we propose a novel Cross-Modality Fusion with Local and Global Semantic Feature Correlation Object Detection Network (CFLGNet), which effectively enhances the distinguishability. Firstly, we design a Semantic-Attention Mamba Fusion Block called SAMFB, which maps the cross-modal features i

Teaching Signal Synchronization in Deep Neural Networks With Prospective Neurons.

Working memory requires the brain to maintain information from the recent past to guide ongoing behavior. Neurons can contribute to this capacity by slowly integrating their inputs over time, creating persistent activity that outlasts the original stimulus. However, when these slowly integrating neurons are organized hierarchically, they introduce cumulative delays that create a fundamental challenge for learning: teaching signals that indicate whether behavior was correct or incorrect arrive out-of-sync with the neural activity they are meant to instruct. Here, we demonstrate that neurons enh

Neural Network-Based Granular Activity Recognition from Accelerometers: Assessing Generalizability Across Diverse Mobility Profiles.

Human activity recognition (HAR) lies at the core of digital healthcare applications that monitor different types of physical activity. Traditional HAR methods often struggle to adapt to variable-length, real-world activity data and to generalise across cohorts (e.g., from young to old cohorts). Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate HAR using wearable sensor data, with a particular focus on cross-cohort evaluation. Each dataset included two accelerometers (right thigh and lower back) sampling at 50 Hz, capturing a range of daily-life activities that were annotated using video recordin

Multi-view semi-supervised adversarial attention network for drug repurposing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Drug repositioning represents an efficient strategy for uncovering new therapeutic indications for approved drugs. However, most existing prediction methods rely on similarity data and overlook biological and chemical information. In addition, data sparsity and randomly selected negative samples further limit predictive performance. METHODS: We propose the Multi-view Semi-Supervised Adversarial Attention Network (M-SSAAN) for drug-disease association prediction. M-SSAAN combines structural and similarity embeddings to generate multi-view representations, and employs

ProMA-Net: MR-TRUS prostate registration via a dual-stream Swin Transformer-based network with mixed attention.

Multimodal registration between magnetic resonance (MR) and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) prostate images is crucial for targeted biopsy and therapy, yet this task remains extremely challenging due to complex cross-modality anatomical correspondences, fusion conflicts between modality-specific and modality-common features, and difficulty in balancing computational efficiency and registration accuracy. We address the challenging problem of deformable registration between preoperative MR and intraoperative TRUS prostate images by proposing a novel dual-stream Swin Transformer-based network. Our

Optimization and External Validation of a Deep Learning Model for Segmentation and Quantification of Traumatic Brain Injury Lesions on Head Computed Tomography.

Current methods for radiological classification in traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as the Marshall and Rotterdam score, provide an incomplete description of intracranial lesion burden, rely on time-consuming manual assessments by experts, and are prone to intra- and interrater disagreement. To circumvent these limitations, we previously proposed the Brain Lesion Analysis and Segmentation Tool for Computed Tomography (BLAST-CT), a deep learning-based method using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to perform multiclass, voxel-wise segmentation and quantification of TBI lesions on CT in an

SkeDiff: Skeleton 3D CT Diffusion Reconstruction Using 2D X-Ray.

For orthopedic diagnostics, both 2D X-ray and 3D CT imaging play essential roles. X-ray imaging is widely accessible, clinically effective, easy to operate, and has lower radiation exposure than CT. However, its inherent 2D nature limits comprehensive visualization of skeletal structures, which 3D CT provides. To bridge this gap, we propose SkeDiff, an algorithm for reconstructing 3D CT images of the skeleton from orthogonal 2D X-ray projections. To fully leverage the information in X-ray images for guiding the diffusion process, we design a cross-dimensional conditional encoder, $E_{Cond}$, t

Phys-AbGAT: a physics-informed multi-task graph attention network for robust antibody-antigen binding affinity prediction.

MOTIVATION: Accurate prediction of antibody-antigen binding affinity is essential for therapeutic antibody design. Existing methods often model the dissociation constant (KD) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) independently, overlooking their thermodynamic relationship and complex paratope-epitope spatial interactions. RESULTS: We introduce Phys-AbGAT, a physics-informed multi-task graph attention network that represents the antibody-antigen interface as a spatial graph. It integrates ESM2 evolutionary embeddings with radial basis functions and employs a thermodynamically motivated auxiliary loss to

LEGEND: Lorentzian electro-modal graph encoder for neural decoding for SCI rehabilitation.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) severs voluntary motor control between cortical intent (electroencephalography, EEG, above the lesion) and peripheral muscle activity (electromyography, EMG, below it), leaving spinal circuit signals (electrospinography, ESG) as the critical intermediate. A viable neural bypass must jointly model all three tiers of the motor hierarchy. We introduce LEGEND (Lorentzian Electro-modal Graph Encoder for Neural Decoding), a two-stage architecture that encodes EEG/ESG/EMG in Lorentz hyperboloid space via a shared TriModalLorentzNet, connects the 51 channel nodes through a sig

Temporal coding enables hyperacuity in event-based vision.

Although the eye may appear static during fixation, it is in constant motion-transforming visual input into rich spatio-temporal streams of neuronal activity. These movements challenge the classical view that visual acuity derives from spatial sampling, suggesting that hyperacuity can emerge from precise temporal encoding. Here we show that artificial systems can exploit this principle using retina-like event-based (EB) sensing, a neuromorphic approach in which the sensor emits asynchronous spikes in response to luminance changes. Using an EB camera undergoing controlled "fixational" motion ov
