Social support, conflict, and the development of marital dysfunction.

How spouses help each other contend with personal difficulties is an unexplored but potentially important domain for understanding how marital distress develops. Newly married couples participated in 2 interaction tasks: a problem-solving task in which spouses discussed a marital conflict and a social support task in which spouses discussed personal, nonmarital difficulties. Observational coding of these interactions showed that wives' support solicitation and provision behaviors predicted marital outcomes 2 years later, independent of negative behaviors during marital problem-solving discussi

Use of a child behavior checklist in the psychosocial assessment of children with epilepsy.

Children with epilepsy are faced with many of the same psychosocial stressors as other chronically ill children, and a proper assessment is vital. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Child Behavior Checklist of Achenbach and Edelbrock could be used as a practical and objective tool for evaluating the psychosocial needs of children with epilepsy. Thirty-eight children were randomly selected from the Neurology outpatient clinic at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Questionnaires were completed by the mothers during their waiting period. Results demonstrated the highe

Intergenerational pathways from maternal childhood maltreatment to offspring adjustment: Mediating roles of attachment, sensitivity, and maternal psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Maternal childhood maltreatment might have long-lasting consequences, not only at the individual level but also within the family system. Yet few studies have used longitudinal observational measures of mother-child interaction to explain the consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the longitudinal links between maternal childhood maltreatment and offspring's emotional and behavioral problems in late childhood, and explored maternal psychopathology, infant attachment, and maternal sensitivity as potential mediators. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Using data from a large study in

Atypical functional connectome is associated with low reflective functioning in incarcerated adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: While functional neuroimaging studies have reported on the neural correlates of severe antisocial behaviors, such as delinquency, little is known about whole brain resting state functional connectivity (FC) of incarcerated adolescents (IA). The aim of the present study is to identify potential differences in resting state connectivity between a group of male IA, compared to community adolescents (CA). The second objective is to investigate the relations among FC and psychological factors associated with delinquent behaviors, namely psychopathic traits (callous unemotional traits,

Recognizing Early Regulation Disorders in Pediatric Care: The For Healthy Offspring Project.

BACKGROUND Regulation disorders are already apparent in infancy. The For Healthy Offspring Project was the first Hungarian study aimed at building an effective model for screening and examining the prevalence and complex (medical and psychosocial) background of classic behavior regulation disorders (excessive crying, feeding, and sleep problems) in infancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data were collected from families of 0- to 3-year-old children in a pediatric hospital and its neighboring areas through questionnaires, medical examinations, and individual and small-group consultations. RESULTS In the

At-Risk/Problematic Shopping and Gambling in Adolescence.

Elevated levels of both pathological gambling (PG) and problem shopping (PS) have been reported among adolescents, and each is associated with a range of other negative health/functioning measures. However, relationships between PS and PG, particularly during adolescence, are not well understood. In this study, we explored the relationship between different levels of problem-gambling severity and health/functioning characteristics, gambling-related social experiences, gambling behaviors and motivations among adolescents with and without at-risk/problematic shopping (ARPS). Survey data from Con

Associations Between Having a Spouse/Partner with Alcohol Problems and One's Own Risk of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders by Sexual Orientation.

INTRODUCTION: The association between an individual's alcohol misuse and their spouse's/partner's behavioral health is well documented. Whether these associations vary by sexual orientation is unknown. METHODS: We used data from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III; n = 36,309 U.S. adults ≥18 years). Using multivariable logistic regression models, we examined the associations between sexual orientation (heterosexual-identified with concordant attraction/behavior, heterosexual-identified with discordant attraction/behavior, gay/lesbian, and

Co-exposure to toxic metals and phthalates in pregnant women and their children's mental health problems aged four years - Taiwan Maternal and Infant Cohort Study (TMICS).

BACKGROUND: Childhood and adolescent mental health problems may increase the global burden of disease. Neurotoxic metals are associated with inflammation and cytotoxicity in the brain. In addition, prenatal phthalate ester (PAE) exposure is associated with cognitive function deficits. However, the effect of co-exposure to toxic metals, PAEs, and their association with child behavior is less well studied. Hence, we aimed to investigate prenatal co-exposure to the metals and PAEs and the consequent behavioral outcomes in early childhood. METHODS: We followed pregnant women and their newborns fr

Staging joint pain and disability: a brief method using persistence and global severity.

OBJECTIVE: Joint pain in older adults is a problem commonly presented to primary care. In contrast to methods for defining and staging the most likely underlying disease (osteoarthritis), clinically practicable methods for staging pain and associated disability are lacking. Our objective was to test a method of brief pain assessment and clinical staging based on recognized focal features of chronic pain and preexisting measurement tools. METHODS: A total of 781 adults ages > or =50 years who were registered with 3 general practices and were experiencing knee pain within the previous 6 months

The effects of clozapine on aggression and substance abuse in schizophrenic patients.

Aggressive behavior in schizophrenic patients, although infrequent, is a serious problem. It is, however, a relatively common reason for psychiatric admission and poses an increasing threat as more patients are cared for in the community. There is a strong association between substance abuse and violent behavior, and comorbid substance abuse in schizophrenia is also a major problem. The recent introduction of the atypical antipsychotics has brought hope for the pharmacologic management of this group of patients. These newer agents are thought to have antiaggressive effects and perhaps decrease

Prenatal alcohol exposure, birthweight, and externalizing behavior in children: Insights from sex-stratified four-way decomposition.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a risk factor for early-onset psychopathology. Low birthweight (LBW), one potential consequence of PAE, increases the vulnerability of children for externalizing disorders. This study investigates potential sex-specific indirect pathways linking PAE to behavioral symptoms in offspring, focusing on LBW as a mediating and moderating factor. METHODS: Participants were 9-10-year-old singleton children whose biological parents reported on pregnancy experiences in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. PAE was a binary variable, indic

Using the child behavior checklist to determine associations between psychosocial aspects and TMD-related pain in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Since children and adolescents are frequently experiencing emotional and behavioral consequences due to pain, their parents should be aware of this emotional and behavioral status. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze and describe the parents' reports of the emotional and behavioral status of children and adolescents with different types of temporomandibular disorders using the Child Behavior Checklist. METHODS: This Cross-sectional study comprises of 386 randomly selected children and adolescents that ages between 10 and 18 years in Jeddah. One day prior the clinical e

Contribution of family violence to the intergenerational transmission of externalizing behavior.

Research finds that early antisocial behavior is a risk for later intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and victimization, and that children's exposure to their parents' IPV is a risk for subsequent behavior problems. This study tests whether intimate violence (IPV) between partners contributes independently to the intergenerational transmission of antisocial behavior, using the Children in the Community Study, a representative sample (N = 821) followed for over 25 years in 6 assessments. The present study includes a subsample of parents (N = 678) and their offspring (N = 396). We test

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and serotonin abnormalities: a selective overview for the implications of suicide prevention.

Suicidal behavior and mood disorders are one of the world's largest public health problems. The biological vulnerability for these problems includes genetic factors involved in the regulation of the serotonergic system and stress system. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a neuroendocrine system that regulates the body's response to stress and has complex interactions with brain serotonergic, noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems. Corticotropin-releasing hormone and vasopressin act synergistically to stimulate the secretion of ACTH that stimulates the biosynthesis of corticoster

Development of a psychobiological nosology for fear and frustration in clinical animal behavior using dogs as a model species.

Assessing emotion is an integral part of the diagnostic process in clinical animal behavior and facilitates more specific management for the related behavior. Fear and frustration are commonly involved in such issues, and clinical animal behaviorists appear to find these emotions challenging to identify and differentiate, with a range of views on the nature of these emotions. This problem is compounded by a lack of consensus definitions for these terms, authors frequently relying on intuitive understanding, and the variability in definitions used, when they are actually defined, within the cli

An Initial Investigation of Individual Rate-of-Play Preferences and Associations with EGM Gambling Behavior.

Electronic gambling machines (EGMs) show a strong association with gambling problems. The high speed of gaming offered by modern EGMs allows playing numerous games in a short span of time, which is thought to contribute to attentional distraction, increased spending and prolonged play. However, the relationship between EGM speeds and potentially risk-related gambling behavior remains unclear. We introduce a novel approach to investigating the role of gaming speed in EGM gambling behavior by examining 'individual rate-of-play' (I-ROP) during simulated EGM gambling. A community sample of male re
