The center of body mass (COM), center of foot pressure (COP), and body segment acceleration signals are commonly used to indicate movement performance and stability during standing activities and walking. For balance maintenance and restoration, the human brain is capable of estimating and predicting the COM even in the absence of visual or vestibular information. Thus, we hypothesized that the COM may be acquired through the processing of proprioceptive somatosensory information, represented by body segment accelerations, and an external spatial reference, the ground support, represented by t

Currently little is known about how adaptive responses to virtual environments are different between individuals who experience sickness related symptoms and those who do not. It is believed that sensory interactions between visually perceived self-motion and static inertial cues from vestibular and/or proprioceptive sensory systems contribute to the development of adaptation symptoms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between adaptation symptoms and postural stability in a virtual environment (VE) driving simulator. In addition, the role of sensory interaction was assesse

This study analyses the differences in the relative cross-sectional area (rCSA) of several cervical extensor muscles, assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), between patients with chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) and healthy controls. MRI of the cervical spine was performed on 15 CTTH females and 15 matched controls. The rCSA values for the rectus capitis posterior minor (RCPmin), rectus capitis posterior major (RCPmaj), semispinalis capitis and splenius capitis muscles were measured from axial T1-weighted images using axial MR slices aligned parallel to the C2/3 intervertebral disc.

Two cases of unilateral monoataxia, due to small infarcts in the precentral and postcentral gyri, were reported. A 76-year-old man (case 1), and a 90-year-old woman (case 2) suddenly developed clumsiness of the left upper extremity. Neurological examination revealed cerebellar ataxia in the left upper extremity in both cases. But, the other abnormal neurological findings, including the muscle weakness, abnormal muscle tone, and proprioceptive deficit, were not noted. In case 2, cerebellar ataxia disappeared about ten days after the onset of the disease. On the other hand, ataxia of case 1 rema

The selective alpha2-adrenoreceptor antagonist, atipamezole, improves behavioural performance of rats subjected to focal cerebral ischemia. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the facilitatory effect of atipamezole on behaviour is related to altered neuronal activity in specific brain areas. The right middle cerebral artery of rats was occluded for 120 min using the intraluminal filament method. Starting on day 2 after induction of ischemia, atipamezole (1mg/kg, s.c.) or 0.9% NaCl was administered to ischemic or sham-operated rats once a day 30 min before the limb-placing t

Physiological responses to changes in the gravitational field and body position, as well as symptoms of patients with anxiety-related disorders, have indicated an interrelationship between vestibular function and stress responses. However, the relative significance of cochlear and vestibular information in autonomic regulation remains unresolved because of the difficulties in distinguishing the relative contributions of other proprioceptive and interoceptive inputs, including vagal and somatic information. To investigate the role of cochlear and vestibular function in central and physiological

Orthopteran insects (crickets, bushcrickets, and acridid grasshoppers) are preferred preparations for the study of the central nervous mechanisms that underlie behavior. Many of their behaviors are based on central rhythm-generating circuits located in the ganglia of the ventral nerve cord. Activities of these circuits must be coordinated and adapted to the behavioral context by sensory information, which can derive from proprioceptive or exteroceptive inputs. Information from various sensory modalities converges in yet unidentified "higher brain centers" that integrate and transform it into a

The dorsal columns of the spinal cord are a major source of haptic (sense of active touch) and proprioceptive input to the brainstem and sensory-motor cortex. Following injury in primates, there are impairments in two-point discrimination, direction of movement across the skin, and frequency of vibration, and qualitative control of the digits, but simple spatial discriminations recover. In the rat there are qualitative deficits in paw control in skilled reaching, but no sensory deficits have been reported. Because recent investigations of sensory control suggest that sensory functions may be r

Vestibular neurotomy remains the surgical procedure of choice in the management of peripheral vertigo resistant to the usual medical treatment, for patients with preserved hearing. Menière's disease generally sums up most of the surgical indications. The authors report a personnel series of patients who underwent vestibular neurotomy during the last five years, from January to December 1998. The aim of this study was to assess with a 6 months to 3.5 years follow-up, postoperative complications and functional results, particularly the improvement of dizziness, residual unsteadiness and its impa

Machado-Joseph disease, an autosomal dominant multisystem motor degeneration, has been described mainly in people of Portuguese descent. Our report documents the presence of Machado-Joseph disease in the Chinese population, based on the specific molecular marker of a CAG repeat array in the 3' end of the MJD gene. We screened 21 Chinese families with dominant spinocerebellar ataxia. The results showed that Machado-Joseph disease with CAG expansion accounted for 52% of families with autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia in this series. The clinical characteristics, besides the well-documented ce

Object motion perception was assessed in avestibular patients and normal controls. Two experiments were conducted, in which subjects were required to assess the motion of a visual stimulus with respect to earth. In the first experiment, we measured the velocity at which a briefly presented (200 ms) grating was perceived as earth fixed, while the subject maintained fixation on a visual target fixed relative to the body, during whole-body yaw rotation (VOR suppression). In this experimental setup, the influence of the semicircular canal signals on object motion perception was evaluated. The aves

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the effects of an active care protocol that includes isolated lumbar spine strengthening on a chronic low back pain patient.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 20-yr-old female college basketball player suffered from a 7-month history of debilitating low back and left leg pain. Four previous independent physicians expressed diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainty. Bone scan, MRI, nerve conduction study, electromyography, CT, discogram and laboratory evaluation had all failed to identify the etiology of the problem. The patient was forced to discontinue basketball and drop out of colleg

Proprioceptive loss, paresthesias, and atrophy of the hands can occur with disorders afflicting the upper cervical spinal cord. The diagnosis might be erroneous, because compression in this region might produce signs and symptoms that seem to originate in the lower cervical cord. This article reviews the clinical presentation and radiographic data of a consecutive series of 11 patients who presented between 1992 and 1994 with an extradural lesion above the C4 level. Each patient had a characteristic syndrome of finger and hand dysesthesia, hand atrophy, and occipital or cervical pain. These co

The visual-vestibular-proprioceptive sensory mismatch of vection provokes motion sickness in approximately 60% of healthy subjects. Approximately 60% of astronauts experience motion sickness in microgravity where vestibular/otolith function is altered. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which symptoms of motion sickness and tachygastria, an abnormal 4-9 cpm rhythm of the stomach, decrease or adapt during three repeated exposures to a rotating circular vection drum. Subjects sat in the drum for 45 min: 15 min baseline, 15 min drum rotation at 60 degrees.s-1, and 15 min rec

We report clinical and laboratory investigations of 47 native-born Jamaican patients with endemic tropical spastic paraparesis and of 1 patient with tropical ataxic neuropathy. Mean age at onset was 40 years, with a female-male preponderance (2.7:1). Neurological features of endemic tropical spastic paraparesis are predominantly those of a spastic paraparesis with variable degrees of proprioceptive and/or superficial sensory impairment. Using enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA), IgG antibodies to human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) were present in 82% of sera and 77% of cerebros

Our purpose was to examine the influence of steady-state changes in chemical stimuli, as well as discrete peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation, on abdominal expiratory motor activity. In decerebrate, paralyzed, vagotomized, and ventilated cats that had bilateral pneumothoraces, we recorded efferent activity from a phrenic nerve and from an abdominal nerve (cranial iliohypogastric nerve, L1). All cats showed phasic expiratory abdominal nerve discharge at normocapnia [end-tidal PCO2 38 +/- 2 Torr], but small doses (2-6 mg/kg) of pentobarbital sodium markedly depressed this activity. Hyperoxic hy
