To study muscle necrosis due to prolonged limb compression, we measured intramuscular pressure by inserting wick catheters into 10 volar forearms and 10 anterior tibial compartments of adult volunteers. We then placed the subjects in positions in which victims of drug overdose are commonly found. Intramuscular pressures in the area of direct compression on hard surfaces ranged from 26 to 240 mm Hg, and averaged 101 mm Hg. Most remarkable was a mean pressure of 180 mm Hg on compression of the forearm by the rib cage. These pressures are sufficient to cause muscle and capillary ischemia and necr

Serial changes in coagulation and fibrinolysis studied among 42 patients admitted to hospital with a wide variety of injuries are reported. The first hours after trauma are dominated by an acceleration of fibrinolysis (clot lysis) and clotting time which are often followed by an abrupt rebound to prolonged fibrinolysis and normal clotting. Evidence is presented that acceleration of fibrinolysis is due to flooding of the circulation by plasminogen activator and that prolongation is probably due to an inhibitor. A prolonged prothrombin time, increased prothrombin consumption index, an accelerati

As the literature is not exhaustive with reference to the way the Turin Shroud (TS) Man was crucified, and it is not easy to draw significant information from only a "photograph" of a man on a linen sheet, this study tries to add some detail on this issue based on both image processing of high resolution photos of the TS and on experimental tests on arms and legs of human cadavers. With regard to the TS Man hands, a first hypothesis states that the left hand of the TS Man was nailed twice at two different anatomical sites: the midcarpal joint medially to the pisiform between the lunate/pyramid

BACKGROUND: Temporary ligation, primary anastomosis, and temporary shunt have been reported to deal with superior mesenteric artery (SMA) injuries. We aimed to investigate which brought minimal ischemia reperfusion injury in a hypothermic traumatic shock swine model.
METHODS: SMA was completely clamped while pigs were hemorrhaged to a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 40 mm Hg. Animals were then randomized into temporary ligation (A, n=8), primary anastomosis (B, n=8), temporary shunt (C, n=8), and control groups (n=4). Animals in group A remained SMA interrupted for additional 1h while the oth

UNLABELLED: Hypovolemic shock in trauma patients causes high mortality because of exanguination, secondary brain damage, multiple organ disfunction. Good organization and operative protocols are vital to patients in need of a prompt and multidisciplinary treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected data about resuscitative and diagnostic process, severity scores and outcome of all trauma patients in hypovolemic shock admitted to the Ospedale Maggiore in Bologna (Italy) after the organization of an Internal Trauma System.
RESULTS: We obtained a reduction of both diagnostic and therapeutic ti

BACKGROUND: The literature on facial fractures has emphasized obstruction of the airway as the most common associated life-threatening problem. Other life-threatening injuries associated with facial fractures are not as well documented. For this reason, we conducted a retrospective study involving 1,025 patients with facial fractures admitted to the trauma center at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan from January 1995 through December 1998.
METHODS: This study identifies the incidence of facial fractures and establishes a management plan. Life-threatening injuries associated with facial f

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation of trauma patients incurs risks including post-intubation hemodynamic collapse. Trauma patients are at increased risk of secondary harm related to hypotension. The aim of this study was to describe post-intubation hemodynamic collapse in traumatically injured CCT patients and investigate associations with in-hospital outcomes.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of trauma patients ≥18 years admitted to a rural level one trauma center who were transported and intubated by the hospital-based CCT service between January 2017 and June 2024. Hemodynamic collapse

BACKGROUND: Severe trauma can result in cardiorespiratory failure, and when conventional treatment is ineffective, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can serve as an adjunctive therapy. However, the indications for ECMO in trauma cases are uncertain and clinical outcomes are variable. This study sought to describe the prognosis of adult trauma patients requiring ECMO, aiming to inform clinical decision-making and future research.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted on Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, and Scopus databases until March 13, 2023, encompassing relevant studies involving
