Perceptions and Acceptance of a Prophylactic Vaccine for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention methods, such as the advent of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the number of people with newly acquired HIV remains high, particularly in at-risk groups. A prophylactic HIV vaccine could contribute to reduced disease prevalence and future transmission and address limitations of existing options, such as suboptimal long-term adherence to PrEPs. METHODS: This qualitative study aimed to capture perceptions towards and acceptance of prophylactic HIV vaccination in three adult populations in the United States: the gener

Case Report: Adolescent With Autism and Gender Dysphoria.

There is increasing clinical evidence of an association between gender variability, gender dysphoria (GD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This seems to be a two-way relationship, a person with GD is more likely to be diagnosed with ASD and vice versa. In youth, it is important to distinguish whether the presented symptoms are a manifestation of ASD focus on special interests or symptoms of co-occurring GD. This distinction is crucial in the process of planning reversible and especially irreversible medical procedures in the context of treatment. We present the case of a birth-assigned fem

Testing a Push-Pull model: community-based dissemination of oral HIV self-testing.

BACKGROUND: The Push-Pull-Infrastructure (PPI) model is proposed as a strategy for disseminating health innovations. Using a PPI model, we developed and examined the feasibility of a community-based intervention to disseminate oral human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) self-testing (OHST) to men who have sex with men in Portland, OR. METHODS: We disseminated OHST kits through a network of commercial businesses (n = 6) serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer plus community. Data were collected weekly on the number of kits distributed. Street intercepts were conducted with custo

Experiences of stigma and subsequent reduced access to health care among women who inject drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Research into stigma and injecting drug use has typically involved predominantly male participants, with limited research about the unique experience of women who inject drugs. METHODS: This study used survey methods to assess reduced access to health care due to stigma among a sample of women who inject drugs. Women (n = 232) completed a survey as part of a broader national study of people who inject drugs. RESULTS: Only 46 (19.9%) women reported that they had not experienced any injecting drug use-related stigma in the past year and most commonly noted 'sometimes' experiencin

Hepatitis C Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions Among People With HIV in South Texas.

Direct-acting antivirals are overwhelmingly effective in curing hepatitis C (HCV). Barriers to HCV treatment exist for those co-infected with both HIV and HCV. Southern states represent the epicenter of the HIV epidemic in the United States. This study assessed HCV knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions in 318 co-infected individuals attending Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) clinics in three South Texas cities. Two groups were compared, those tested for HCV and aware of their results (Group 1) and those uncertain if they were tested or tested and unaware of their results (Group 2). HCV know

Fragrance compounds: The wolves in sheep's clothings.

In the past few decades, synthetic fragrance compounds have become ubiquitous components of personal care and household cleaning products. Overwhelming consumerism trends have led to the excess usage of these chemicals. It has been observed that this fragrance-laden unhealthy lifestyle runs parallel with the unprecedented rates of diabetes, cancer, neural ailments, teratogenicity, and transgender instances. The link between fragrances as and the multiplicity of pathogens remained latent for decades. However, now this health hazard and its role in homeostasis breakdown is getting attention. The

Designing Implementation Strategies for the Inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, and Allied and Key Populations' Content in Undergraduate Nursing Curricula in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: Protocol for a Multimethods Research Project.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and allied (LGBTQIA+) individuals encounter challenges with access and engagement with health services. Studies have reported that LGBTQIA+ individuals experience stigma, discrimination, and health workers' microaggression when accessing health care. Compelling evidence suggests that the LGBTQIA+ community faces disproportionate rates of HIV infection, mental health disorders, substance abuse, and other noncommunicable diseases. Patient perceptions of and experiences with stigma using telehealth for opioid use disorder treatment: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) experience various forms of stigma at the individual, public, and structural levels that can affect how they access and engage with healthcare, particularly with medications for OUD treatment. Telehealth is a relatively new form of care delivery for OUD treatment. As reducing stigma surrounding OUD treatment is critical to address ongoing gaps in care, the aim of this study was to explore how telehealth impacts patient experiences of stigma. METHODS: In this qualitative study, we interviewed patients with OUD at a single urban academic medic

Healthcare preferences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.

PURPOSE: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth appear to be at higher risk for certain adverse health outcomes, and to have several personal, cultural and structural barriers to accessing healthcare. Little is known, however, about the experiences of LGBTQ youth with healthcare providers and healthcare services. Our goal was to recruit a sample of LGBTQ youth and to determine their preferences regarding healthcare providers, healthcare settings and the health issues that they consider important to discuss with a healthcare provider. METHODS: We conducted a cross-se

HIV and sexual health needs of young key populations in Papua New Guinea: results of biobehavioural surveys (2016-2017).

Papua New Guinea lacks data characterising the sexual health needs of younger key populations (KP): female sex workers (FSW) and commercially and sexually exploited girls (CSE), men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender women (TGW). Biobehavioural surveys among KP were conducted in three cities. We conducted unweighted and weighted analysis for sample and population proportions, respectively. Variables associated with younger versus older age (15-24 versus ≥25 years) were included in the multivariable analysis. Younger FSW/CSEG had greater odds of having both Neisseria gonorrhoea and Ch

The Effectiveness of Gender Affirming Voice Training for Transfeminine Clients: A Comparison of Traditional Versus Intensive Delivery Schedules.

INTRODUCTION: Gender affirming voice training is a service provided by speech language pathologists to members of the trans and gender diverse community. While there is some evidence to support the effectiveness of this training, the evidence base is limited by a lack of prospective studies with large sample sizes. Finally, there has been only limited research investigating the effectiveness of this training when delivered on intensive (compressed) schedules, even though such schedules are used in clinical practice and may have practical benefits such as increasing service access for this vuln
