BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) metabolize several drugs including isoniazid. We investigated the effect of genotype, geographical difference, and smoking habit on NAT2 phenotype in Ethiopians.
METHODS: Genotyping for NAT2 191G > A, 341 T > C, 590G > A, and 857G > A was performed in 163 unrelated healthy Ethiopians (85 living in Ethiopia and 78 living in Sweden). The NAT2 phenotype was determined using caffeine as a probe and log AFMU/(AFMU + 1X + 1 U) urinary metabolic ratio (MR) as an index.
RESULTS: The frequencies of NAT2*4, *5, *6, *7, and *14 haplotypes were 14.

We previously identified AG-690/11026014 (6014) as a novel poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) inhibitor that effectively prevented angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. In the present study, we reported a new synthesis route for 6014, and investigated its protective effects on Ang II-induced cardiac remodeling and cardiac dysfunction and the underlying mechanisms in mice. We designed a new synthesis route to obtain a sufficient quantity of 6014 for this in vivo study. C57BL/6J mice were infused with Ang II and treated with 6014 (10, 30, 90 mg·kg-1·d-1, ig) for 4 weeks.

AIM: To evaluate the influence of su-jok therapy (one of the methods of alternative medicine) in combination with chemotherapy on the course of bronchial asthma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 68 patients have undergone su-jok therapy in combination with drug treatment in accordance with international asthma consensus. Control group of 44 patients received only chemotherapy. The response was assessed by: quantitative indices of asthma course, FEV1, FEF 25, 75, 50, PEF, demand of beta2-agonists, long-term outcomes.
RESULTS: The efficiency coefficient made up 2.64 in patients versus 1.48 in controls.

We now have sufficient knowledge to be able to identify the factors contributing to hyperuricemia in most patients with gout. Some of these factors, such as obesity, a high-purine diet, regular alcohol consumption, and diuretic therapy, may be correctable. In patients with persistent hyperuricemia, regular medication should lower the serum urate concentration to an optimal level. The continuing challenge is to educate patients about correctable factors and the importance of regular medication and ensure their compliance so that attacks of gout do not recur.

We investigated the possible renal protective effects of KW-3902 (8-(noradamantan-3-yl)-1,3-dipropylxanthine), an adenosine A1-receptor antagonist, against gentamicin (GM)-induced acute renal failure (ARF) in rats. Using the guppy, Lebistes reticulatus, and the siluroid catfish, Parasilurus asotus , the effects of purine and pyrimidine derivatives on the movement of melanophores were studied.
