Pediatric patients are often affected by malformation and genetic illness. Among 316 consecutive cases of genetic counseling chromosomal disorders amounted to one third of the problems and 10% of the cases were neural tube defects. Drugs in pregnancy and intrauterine infections contributed to another 10%. Genetic counseling represents a small but important part of a comprehensive medical care.

A retrospective study of congenital malformations in the offspring of 20 women who received antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy is presented. Of 56 births, 9 children (16%) were born with malformations. Four children were born dead or died shortly after delivery. Congenital heart disease, cleft lip with or without cleft palate, neural tube defects, and skeletal abnormalities were the commonest anomalies found. BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs), one of the most common congenital malformations, are potentially preventable cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality.
OBJECTIVES: To give baseline description of NTDs and their outcome at two teaching hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cross sectional descriptive study conducted from September 2009 to August 2012.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary intake of methyl donors such as folic acid prevents neural tube defects (NTD), but recent studies showed that it might also favor the development of asthma. In this work a possible ecological association between NTD and asthma was explored.

The invocation of moral rights in moral/social debate today is a recipe for deadlock in our consideration of substantive issues. How we treat animals and humans in part should derive from the value of their lives, which is a function of the quality of their lives, which in turn is a function of the richness of their lives. Consistency in argument requires that humans with a low quality of life should be chosen as experimental subjects over animals with a higher quality of life.
