A Case of Rare Imported Plasmodium ovale Infection in Shaoxing.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a global disease caused by the transmission of the malaria parasite through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. There are 4 kinds of common malaria parasites, among which oval malaria is mainly prevalent in tropical West Africa, with a narrow distribution range, mainly imported cases in China, which is relatively rare. Because the morphology, attack cycle, recrudescence and relapse are similar to those of Plasmodium vivax and, therefore, is easily missed and misdiagnosed. METHODS: Malaria parasite-specific antigens were detected in whole blood samples using rapi…

A novel mitigation strategy for the prevention of transfusion-transmitted malaria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium and transmitted by Anopheles mosquitos. In the US, blood donors are assessed for malaria risk, including donor travel or previous residence in endemic areas and history of malaria by questionnaire and deferred for three months or three years, respectively. METHODS: The Procleix Plasmodium Assay is a qualitative nucleic acid test based on transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) for the detection of 18S ribosomal RNA of P. falciparum, P. ovale, P. vivax, P. malariae, and P. knowlesi for use on the Procleix Panther system. Anal…

Effect of larval diets on the life table parameters of dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) using age-stage two sex life table theory.

The current study regarding the effects of larval diets on the life table parameters of dengue mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti was conducted under laboratory conditions at 27 ± 2 °C and 60 ± 5% relative humidity at NIFA (Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture) Peshawar, Pakistan. The data on life table parameters of Ae. aegypti reared on Diet 1 (replacement diet), Diet 2 (Khan's diet for Anopheles), Diet 3 (Khan's modified diet) and Diet 4 (IAEA diet) were analyzed using the age-stage, two-sex life table software. Diet 4 (IAEA) was used as a control for comparison. The results indicated that sig…

Four species (Anopheles arabiensis, An. rufipes, An. squamosus, and An. coustani) were positive for Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein by ELISA, and 61% of these 26 anophelines were captured outdoors. Toxicity studies of nanofabricated palladium against filariasis and malaria vectors.

The present study was carried out to establish the biofabrication of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) using the plant leaf extract of Tinospora cordifolia Miers and its toxicity studies on the larvae of filariasis vector, Culex quinquefasciatus Say and malaria vector, Anopheles subpictus Grassi. The biofabricated PdNPs were characterized by using UV-visible spectrum, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, EDX and HRTEM. HRTEM confirmed the PdNPs were slightly agglomerated and spherical in shape and the average size was 16 nm. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis result revealed that the major constitue…

Impact of six rounds of mass drug administration on Brugian filariasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections in eastern Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The lymphatic filarial parasite Brugia timori occurs only in eastern Indonesia where it causes high morbidity. The absence of an animal reservoir, the inefficient transmission by Anopheles mosquitoes and the high sensitivity to DEC/albendazole treatment make this species a prime candidate for elimination by mass drug administration (MDA). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We evaluated the effect of MDA using DEC and albendazole on B. timori and soil transmitted helminths (STH) in a cross-sectional study of a sentinel village on Alor Island annually over a period of 10 years. Purification and characterization of mosquitocidal Bacillus sphaericus BinA protein.

Certain strains of Bacillus sphaericus produce a highly toxic mosquito-larvicidal binary toxin during sporulation. The binary toxin is composed of toxic BinA (41.9kDa) and receptor binding BinB (51.4kDa) polypeptides and is active against vectors of filariasis, encephalitis and malaria. The toxin has been tested with limited use for the control of vector mosquitoes for more than two decades. The binA gene from a local ISPC-8 strain of B. sphaericus that is highly toxic to Culex and Anopheles mosquito species was cloned into pET16b and expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified BinA protein di…

Malaria blood-stage infection and its control by the immune system.

Malaria is caused by the protozoon Plasmodium, transmitted to humans by Anopheles mosquitoes. The most dangerous of the plasmodia infecting humans is Plasmodium falciparum. The disease is caused by those parasite stages which multiply asexually in red blood cells. In non-immune individuals, P. falciparum may cause severe and life-threatening disease. Another risk group is constituted by pregnant women, particularly during their first pregnancies. Immunity to malaria usually requires repeated exposure to the parasite to become long lasting. One reason for this is the capacity of the parasite to…
